In order to avoid excessive vibration, it is required to carry out a vibration analysis of heat-exchanger/nuclear-reactor at the design stage. Information of eigen-frequency in the vibration problem is required to evaluate safety of heat-exchange/nuclear reactor. This paper describes a numerical method, Galerkin's method, to solve the eigenvalue problem occurred in a cantilever beam. The beam is restrained with added mass and spring at the free end or a node point of a mode shape. The numerical results of eigen-frequency were compared with simple analytical and experimental results given by simple approach and simple test, respectively. It is found that Galerkin's method is applicable to estimate the eigen-frequency of the cantilever beam. The frequencies become lower with increasing the added mass and the frequencies increase with the spring force. It is shown the heavy added mass has a role of support on the flexible tube. The eigen-frequency of the first mode, for the system with the added mass mounted at the free end, can be calculated by the approximate analytical method existing with more or less accuracy.

The paper presents the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and haying translational linear spring supports. Real pipe systems may have some elastic hanger supports or other mechanical attached parts. which can be regarded as attached spring supports. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of spring supports on the dynamic stability of a vortical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are fully investigated for various locations and spring constants of elastic supports.

In ship and of offshore structures, there exist many local panels of various shapes having many kinds of attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For the vibration analysis of panels, analytical methods such as Rayleight-Ritz method or the assumed mode method can be efficiently applied. There have been many studies on the vibration analysis of rectangular panels using the analytical methods but relatively few for arbitrary shape panels. An efficient formulation based on the assumed mode method is presented for the vibration analysis of an arbitrary quadrangular plate having concentrated masses, supporting springs such as pillars and spring-mass systems. In the formulation, the natural coordinate system is used for the efficient treatment of an arbitrary quadrangular shape. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.

Generally, the steel rigid frame has been analyzed using finite element analysis tools. While many efforts have been poured into the understanding and accurate prediction for the nonlinear behavior of the columns and beam-columns connections, the base of the columns are modeled as simply hinged or fixed. However, the base of the steel columns practically is neither fixed not hinged. It behaves as semi-rigid. In this paper, the supports of the columns we modeled as semi-rigid and the importance of such approach in moment-resisting columns is evaluated. Two typical buildings designed by the US specification are modeled and analyzed by the finite element based on stiffness method and flexibility method. The column bases of three-story buildings are modeled as rotational springs with a varying degree of stiffness and strength that simulates the semi-rigidity of the base. Depending on the degree of stiffness and strength, the semi-rigidity varies from the hinged to the fixed. Buildings with semi-rigid column bases behaves similarly to the building with fixed bases. It has been numerically observed through the pushover and nonlinear time history analyses that the decrease of the stiffness of the column base induces the rotational demand on the int air beams. an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanists Due often to the construction and environmental effects, undesired reduction of column base stiffness may cause an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanism.

Fretting wear test in room temperature air was performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of fuel rod using a fretting wear tester, which has been developed for experimental study. The main focus was to compare the wear behaviors of fuel rod against support springs at different contact geometries (i.e. concave and convex) and slip directions (axial and transverse). The wear on the tube was examined by the surface roughness tester, which measures the volume. The result indicated that with change of contact geometry from 5N of normal load to 0.1mm gap, wear volume of tube Increased in the condition of concave spring, but slowly decreased in convex spring. From the results of SEM observation, wear mechanism of each test condition was also depend on the above contact parameters. The wear mechanism of each test condition in room temperature air is discussed.

In ship and offshore structures, there exist many local structural systems which may be regarded as a combined structural systems composed of thick plates or double wall panels and attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For vibration analysis of such a combined system an analytical method based on the receptance method is presented in this paper. The free vibrational characteristics and forced vibration responses of the combined system can be calculated by synthesis of receptances of the panel and attachments. To calculate receptances of the panel, it may be regarded as a Mindlin plate for consideration of effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia and the assumed mode-Lagrange's equation method is applied using Timoshenko beam function or polynomials having properties of Timoshenko beam function as trial functions. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.

This paper describes the general formulation for the in-plane flexural free vibration analysis of two layered structure by the transfer influence coefficient method. The structure is regared as a distributed mass system with lumped mass and inertia moments, massless linear and rotational springs, and joints elements of releases and rolls at which the displacements are discontinuous in each layer. The results of the simple numerical examples on a personal computer demonstrate the validity of the present method, that is, the numerical high accuracy, the high speed, the flexibility for programming of the present algorithm, compared with the transfer matrix method.
One-touch fittings are important components that can make a quick and tight connection between pneumatic pipe systems. In this study, the stress analyses with various working pressures on these one-touch fittings are carried out using finite element method. Material properties, to use the stress analyses, are measured by the universal tester and digital Vickers hardness tester. The stress analyses on the circular shell spring forced by various pressures(100, 150, 200, 250kpa) and on the main body due to the fluid-structural interaction are investigated. Results show that the stresses of one-touch fitting are concentrated to supported part of main body and the soundness of a circular shell spring with maximum pressure 250kpa was confirmed.
