  • The purpose of this study was to compare immediate differences in fatigue and motor performance during instrumental playing in patients with chronic stroke depending on whether singing task was concurrently presented. A total of 12 patients with chronic stroke were recruited from community and daycare centers for older adults in Seoul. Six subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group and six to the comparison group. The experimental group was asked to sing while playing the electronic drum, and the comparison group only played the drum. The results of this study showed that statistically significant differences in perceived fatigue and exertion were found between the two groups, while no significant group differences were found in level of engagement in playing or force of tapping during drum playing. This study supports the inclusion of a singing task in instrument playing rehabilitation to effectively decrease perceived fatigue and level of intensity of exercises, although this may not lead to immediate changes in motor function or level of target exercises. The results indicate that singing while instrument playing may help stroke patients shift their attention from the executed motor movements to singing and alleviate the attentional and emotional load from intense movements. This study presents implications for how to select and pattern target movements in music therapy intervention for better motor outcomes.

  • This study applied aquatic and land-based exercises to breast cancer patients for comparative analysis and elucidation of their effects on the rehabilitation of cancer patients. Participants included 40 breast cancer patients who were divided into two groups: 20 participants in the experimental group using aquatic exercise and 20 participants in the control group using land-based exercise. After the addition of aquatic or land-based exercises five times per week for eight weeks, differences in each group's shoulder and pulmonary functions as well as their quality of life were compared and analyzed. The results showed a statistically significant difference (p<.001) for shoulder dysfunction, with the experimental group showing a greater improvement than the comparison group. Statistically significant differences (p<.05 and p<.001, respectively) were also observed for forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), with the experimental group showing greater improvements. Finally, a statistically significant difference (p<.001) was observed for change in the quality of life, with greater improvements in the experimental group than in the control group. The results of further research in this field are expected to indicate the most efficient method for the recovery and management of physical, psychological, and social health impacts of breast cancer on patients. Furthermore, the research aims to provide fundamental resources for breast cancer rehabilitation in South Korea by conducting studies on patients with lung cancer or colorectal cancer and the application of various aquatic exercise methods.

  • This research is about set-up own posture standard and enables to compare the set-up and own posture; therefore, this posture training system leads the user's active learning through the method of self-directed learning. This system includes the camera part that shoots user's posture and save the movie clip for comparison about the user and target, the training server that provides a comparison screen playing clips simultaneously by user's input, and the terminal equipment that connects the training server and a network, transmits the user's input to the server, and displays them from the comparison screen. • The strong demand for corporate social responsibility has led to growing consumer boycotts of corporate misconduct. Although there are differences over the legality of the boycott, it is important to develop the boycott in an effective and correct way because of its positive effects in terms of consumer rights and society. This study identified the factors and their influences on the intention of continuing and stopping boycotts when the boycott was becoming popular. In addition, in accordance with the duration(low/high) and intensity(low/high) of consumer boycott participation, the relative influence of antecedent factors on the continuous and discontinuous intention of boycotts was examined. A total of 272 questionnaires were collected from consumers currently participating in the boycott and analyzed. The analysis showed that the preceding factors had discriminatory effects on the intention of continuing and stopping the boycott, and the effects of the preceding factors on the intention of continuing and stopping the boycott were different depending on the duration and intensity of the boycott. Based on the research results, this study suggested implications, limitations, and future research directions.

  • Background: Exercise influences the generation of brain cells through learning and experience in the process of acquiring motor skills and helps improve brain function. It is necessary to scientifically verify how brain wave activity, a method of analyzing brain function, affects movement. Purposes: We scientifically identify the positive effects on EEG activity when applying complex functional linear ladder movements in an appropriate environment. Methods: After recruiting 30 male university students, we divided them into a linear ladder exercise group, a treadmill exercise group, and a control group, and exercise was applied and measured repeatedly for ten weeks. Results: There was a statistically significant change between groups in the left prefrontal lobe of alpha waves when exercise was applied (p < .05). Conclusions: Although exercise has a positive effect on EEG, line ladder exercise, which applies a complex pattern and produces more leg movement, appears to have a better impact on brain function than traditional aerobic exercise.

  • Recently, the machine tools called multi-task machines, which mounted rotary axes on the table or spindle are used increasingly. Accordingly, multi-task machine tool takes a growing interest on the motion accuracy of feed drive system. In this study, measurement and diagnosis of motion errors ware attempted from circular pattern obtained by using DBB (Double ball bar) device. Those were obtained at both clockwise and counter clockwise motions in mutually perpendicularly intersecting three planes. The reliability of error measurement system for multi-task machine tool was verified by the direct test cutting.

  • A modeling method for cantilever beams undergoing axially oscillating motion is presented in this paper. Hybrid deformation variables are employed for the modeling method. Frequency response characteristics are investigated with the modeling method. It is shown that the geometric nonlinear effects of stretching and curvature play important roles to accurately predict the dynamic response. (omitted)

  • People who were exposed to chronic interpersonal traumas in their early life consistently demonstrate complex psychological disturbances and many of them meet the criteria for proposed diagnosis of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (complx PTSD). The author reports a case of the successful sequential integrative treatment mainly composed of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in a complex PTSD patient. The patient did not respond to the previous treatment with psychotropic medications and supportive psychotherapy. Twelve sessions of EMDR and three sessions of supportive psychotherapy were done for the patient. Psychological assessments were performed before starting the treatment and a week after completing the treatment. After the treatment, the patient improved on all the psychological scales and behavioral measures. This case suggests that the sequential integrative treatment mainly composed of EMDR may be effective for complex PTSD patients.
