  • Global production of zinc is about 13 million tons and zinc is the fourth-most widely used primary metal in the world following iron, aluminum and copper. When zinc is recycled to produce secondary zinc, it can save about 75 % of the total energy that is needed to produce the primary zinc from ore, and in therms of $CO_2$ emissions reduced by about 40 %. However, since zinc is mainly used for galvanizing of steel, the recycling rate of zinc is about 25 %, which is lower than other metals. The raw materials for recycling of zinc include dusts generated in the production of steel and brass, sludge in the production process of non-ferrous metals, dross in the melting of zinc ingots or hot dip galvanizing, waste batteries, and metallic scrap. Among them, steelmaking dust and waste batteries are most actively recycled up to now. Most of the recycling process uses pyrometallurgical methods. Recently, however, much attention has been given to a combined process of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.

  • Utilizing a thermo-acoustic emission (AE) technique, a study on detection and evaluation of microfractures in cross-ply laminate composites was performed. Fiber breakages and matrix fractures formed by a cryogenic cooling at $-191^{\circ}C$ were observed with ultrasonic C-scan, optical and scanning electron microscopy. Those microfractures were monitored in a non-destructive in-situ state as three different types of thermo-AE signals classified on the basis of Fast-Fourier Transform and Short-Time Fourier Transform. Thus, it was concluded that real-time estimation of microfracture processes being formed during cryogenic cooling could be accomplished by monitoring such different types of thermo-AEs in each time-stage and then by analyzing thermo-AE behaviors for the respective AE types on the basis of the AE signal analysis results obtained during thermal heating and cooling load cycles.

  • This study aimed to analyze organic Rankine cycle(ORC) which recovers discarded heat from a gas turbine based combined cycle cogeneration(CC-cogen) plant in terms of both performance and economics. The nominal electric power of the CC-cogen plant is around $120MW_e$, and heat for district heating is $153MW_{th}$. The major purpose of this study is to compare various options in selecting heat source of the ORC. Three heat sources were compared. Case 1 uses the exhaust gas from the HRSG, which is purely wasted to environment in normal plant operation without ORC. Case 2 also uses the exhaust gas from the HRSG. On the other hand, in this case, the DH economizer, which is located at the end of the HRSG, does not operate. Case 3 generates power using some of the district heating water which is supplied to consumers. The estimated ORC power generation ranges between 0.3 to 2.3% of the power generation capacity of the CC-cogen plant. Overall, Case 3 is evaluated to be better than other two options in terms of system design flexibility and power generation capacity.

  • Rubber hose assembly for automotive hydraulic brake during operation is subject to combined stresses of cyclic pressure, cyclic bending and torsion as well as thermal load. The rubber hose is composed of ethylene-propylene diene monomer(EPDM) rubber layers reinforced by polyvinyl acetate(PVA) braided fabrics. A durability tester with loading rigs for inducing the above cyclic stresses was used to investigate failure mechanisms in the rubber hose assembly. Failure examination was performed at every 100 thousands cycles of bending and torsion. Hose samples were sectioned with a diamond-wheel cutter and then polished. The polished surface was observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Some interfacial delamination with a length of about 1mm along the interface between EPDM rubber and PVA fabrics was shown at the test cycles of 400,000. The delamination induced some cracking into the outer rubber skin layer to leading the final rupture of the hose.

  • This study analyzes the design performance of a combined system of a recuperated cycle micro gas turbine (MGT) and a bottoming organic Rankine cycle (ORC) adopting refrigerant (R123) as a working fluid. In contrast to the steam bottoming Rankine cycle, the ORC optimizes the combined system efficiency at a higher evaporating pressure. The ORC recovers much greater MGT exhaust heat than the steam Rankine cycle (much lower stack temperature), resulting in a greater bottoming cycle power and thus a higher combined system efficiency. The optimum MGT pressure ratio of the combined system is very close to the optimum pressure ratio of the MGT itself. The ORC's power amounts to about $25\%$ of MGT power. For the MGT turbine inlet temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ or higher, the combined system efficiency, based on shaft power, can be higher than $45\%$.

  • About 55% of total energy is consumed in the industrial division. The industrial heat pump application will show magnificent energy saving effect as well as higher cost efficiency because of larger energy consuming volume of each facility and longer operation hour and higher stability against seasonal temperature change. Over 90% of dryer for industrial usage has hot wind heat source and hot wind dryer is the representative type covering 68.7% while its 30 ~ 50% lower heat efficiency causes lots of energy loss by exhaust air. Re-usage of exhaust air can improve energy efficiency of dryer because 68% heat energy or 78% of hot air lose in exhaust air. Therefore, high temperature heat pump dryer can be the best alternative. Comparing to the existing dryer with 30% ~ 50% energy efficiency, newly developing high temperature heat pump dryer will enhance energy efficiency up to 60% ~ 80% efficiency. In this paper, heat pump system for high temperature was designed, constructed and tested. The results have shown that system COPh is estimated as 3.3.

  • This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of a combined cycle consisting of regenerative organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) Rankine cycle to recover low-grade heat source and the cold energy of LNG. The mathematical models are developed and the system performances are analyzed in the aspect of thermodynamics. The effects of the turbine inlet pressure and the working fluid on the system performance such as the mass flow rates, heat transfers at heat exchangers, power productions at turbines, and thermal efficiency are systematically investigated. The results show that the thermodynamic performance of ORC such as net power production and thermal efficiency can be significantly improved by the regenerative ORC and the LNG cold energy.

  • The Kalina cycle (KC) is considered as one of the most efficient systems for recovery of low grade heat. Recently, Kalina based power and cooling cogeneration cycles (KPCCCs) have been suggested and attracted much attention. This paper presents an energy and exergy analysis of a recently suggested KPCCC with flexible loads. The cycle consists of a KC (KCS-11) and an aqua-ammonia absorption refrigeration cycle. By adjusting the splitting ratios, the cycle can be operated with four modes of pure Kalina cycle, pure absorption cooling cycle, Kalina-cooling parallel cycle, and Kalina-cooling series cycle. The effects of system variables and the operating modes on the energetic and exergetic performances of the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the system has great potential for efficient utilization of low-grade heat source by adjusting loads of power and cooling.

  • In order to enhance ultra battery performances, the electrochemical characteristics of nano Pb/AC anode composite was investigated. Through nano Pb adsorption onto activated carbon, nano Pb/AC was synthesized and it was washed under vacuum process. The prepared anode materials was analysed by SEM, BET and EDS. The specific surface area and average pore size of nano Pb/AC composite were $1740m^2/g$ and 1.95 nm, respectively. The negative electrode of ultra battery was prepared by nano Pb/AC dip coating on lead plate. The electrochemical performances of ultra battery were studied using $PbO_2$ (the positive electrode) and prepared nano Pb/AC composite (the negative electrode) pair. Also the electrochemical behaviors of ultra battery were investigated by charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry, impedance and rate capability tests in 5 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte. The initial capacity and cycling performance of the present nano Pb/AC ultra battery were improved with respect to the lead battery and the AC-coated lead battery. These experimental results indicate that the proper addition of nano Pb/AC into the negative electrode can improve the discharge capacity and the long term cycle stability and remarkably suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction on the negative electrode.

  • The electrochemical characteristics from various particle sizes of $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-{\delta}}$ (CGO91) in composite cathode comprised of the samarium-strontium doped layered perovskite ($SmBa_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_2O_{5+{\delta}}$) and CGO91 have been investigated for possible application as a cathode material for an intermediate temperature-operating solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC). The area specific resistances (ASRs) of composite cathodes with CGO91 having smaller particle size ($0.4\sim42{\mu}m$) and SBSCO of 1 : 1 ratio (50wt% SBSCO and 50 wt% CGO91, SBSCO: 50) give the lowest ASR of $0.10{\mu}cm^2$ at $600^{\circ}C$ and $0.013{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. However, composite cathodes with having relatively bigger CGO91 particle size show the two times higher ASR results than those of SBSCO : 50. From the 10 times thermal cycles in SBSCO : 50, the ASRs of SBSCO : 50 increased from $0.0193{\Omega}cm^2$ to $0.094{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$, however, the ASR value was maintained after 7 times of thermal cycling.
