  • In this paper, we used various shear deformation functions for modelling isotropic, symmetric composite and sandwich plates discretized by a mixed finite element method based on the Lagrangian/Hermite interpolation functions. These shear deformation theories uses polynomial, trigonometric, hyperbolic and exponential functions through the thickness direction, allowing for zero transverse shear stresses at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. All shear deformation functions are compared with other available analytical/3D elasticity solutions, are predicted the reasonable accuracy for investigated problems. Particularly, The present results show that the use of exponential shear deformation theory (Karama et al. 2003; Aydogu 2009) provides very good solutions for composite and sandwich plates.

  • In this study, impact transient responses of (Graphite/Epoxy) laminated composite subjected to low-velocity impact are investigated using a finite element method. Dynamic von-Karman plate equations considering large deflection of plate are modified to include the effect of transverse shear deformations as in Mindlin plate theory and also the rotary inertia effect is considered. The convergence of transient responses is used contact law established through the statical indentation test. We investigate displacements, contact forces and strains by thickness variation of various laminated composite. We compare and analyze each results.

  • Composite materials have been employed in the various engineering applications due to high mechanical performances including high strength-weight ratio and high degree of free formability. Due to complex manufacturing process, however, it can have intrinsic randomness in the material constants which affect the deterministic behavior of the composite structures. In this study, we suggest a formulation for stochastic finite element analysis considering the spatial randomness of Poisson's ratio. Considering the reciprocal relation between elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios in the two mutually orthogonal axes, one of two values of Poisson's ratio can be expressed in terms of the other. Using this, the relation between stress resultants and strains is derived in the ascending order of power of the stochastic field function, which can be directly used in the formulation to obtain the coefficient of variation of responses. The adequacy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by comparison with the results of Monte Carlo analysis.

  • In order to improve the structural safety and light-weight design of aircraft floats, natural frequency and static stress analysis are performed under water and ground landing conditions. A finite element mesh based on the design configuration of light aircraft floats is modeled, and simplified water and ground landing loads are applied to this model. The natural frequency and stress analysis of aluminum-alloy floats are carried out first. Then, the structural performance of the floats is re-analyzed in the case of laminated composites, and the numerical results are compared each other. It is concluded that, by tailoring the laminated composites with respect to stacking sequence and ply thickness, the structural safety of the light-weight floats can be improved.

  • In this study, we suggest a stochastic finite element scheme for the probabilistic analysis of the composite laminated plates, which have been applied to variety of mechanical structures due to their high strength to weight ratios. The applied concept in the formulation is the weighted integral method, which has been shown to give the most accurate results among others. We take into account the elastic modulus and in-plane shear modulus as random. For individual random parameters, independent stochastic field functions are assumed, and the effect of these random parameters on the response are estimated based on the exponentially varying auto- and cross-correlation functions. Based on example analyses, we suggest that composite plates show a less coefficient of variation than plates of isotropic and orthotropic materials. For the validation of the proposed scheme, Monte Carlo analysis is also performed, and the results are compared with each other.

  • This study deals with the nonlinear strength analysis of laminated composite cylindrical shells to find the optimum structure of pressure vessel. By applying the F.E.M. using the 8-node degenerated Isoparametric shell element and Total Lagrangian formulation and being adopted Newton-Raphson method with incremental load as a solution scheme. the optimum structure is found from the viewpoint of minimum displacement. As a results of linear analysis on the 9 cases of laminated structure, $[50^{\circ}/-50^{\circ}]$ composition of the shell laminate give the minimum deflection. In case of the nonlinear analysis by applying Quadratic Failure Criteria on laminated combination $[{\theta}^{\circ}/-{\theta}^{\circ}]$, shell laminate structure of ${\theta}=50^{\circ}$ under external uniform pressure was founded as a optimum structure and ${\theta}=50^{\circ}$ for the case of external and axial loading combined.

  • In this paper, artificial and real defects(delamination and debond) in composite structures were detected by using ESPI system. Three types of specimens, that is, composite laminates, honeycomb structures, and adhesive joints, were used to study the applicability of ESPI to composite structures. To detect defects in specimens, we selected thermal loading method that can easily induce the surface deformation of specimen. Experimental results show that defects in composite structures could be easily detected by ESPI. Moreover, it shows that ESPI could be usefully applied to the detection of defects in various composite structures.

  • Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. But it is well known that the conventional approach based on the homogenization has the limit in description of damage. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of dynamic behavior and damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials are investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach to impact analysis. Also the multiscale model based on DNS concept is developed in order to enhance the effectiveness of impact analysis, and we present the results of multiscale analysis considering micro and macro structures simultaneously.

  • In aerospace industry, the improvement of structural performance of fight structure without increasing weight has great advantage. In this study. an innovative design method to increase the buckling load and tension failure load at the same time without increasing the weight of composite plates was investigated. By using the curvilinear fiber format a method to increase the buckling load and tension failure load simultaneously was investigated for composite plates with central hole with finite element method. It was investigated how much gain can be obtained with curvilinear fiber format for the plates with different hole size and different stacking sequence. And, for the cases studied, the failure mechanism was also investigated. For the manufacturing of the curvilinear fiber format, smoothly and continuously changing fiber path is necessary. In this study, a simple method to find the smoothly changing fiber path by using the fiber angles obtained with finite element method was presented.

  • In this study, the flutter analysis for a rectangular box wing and an actual fighter wing with composite shin, aluminum spar and aluminum rib has been conducted. A conservative 3D wing-box model of an actual wing is modeled by MSC/PATRAN and the corresponding free vibration analysis has been performed by MSC/NASTRAN. The finite elements of membrane, rod and shear panel are used. Using the practical ply angles, various composite laminates are composed and analysed. The DLM code which is linear aerodynamic theory in frequency domain is applied to calculate unsteady aerodynamic pressure in subsonic flow region and the V-g and p-k methods are applied to obtain the solution of aeroelastic governing equation in frequency domain.
