Composite sandwich structure can improve the specific bending stiffness significantly and save the weight nearly 30 percent compared with the composite laminates. However, it has more inherent uncertainties of the material property caused by manufacturing process than metals. Therefore, the reliability-based probabilistic design approach is required. In this paper, the PMS(Probabilistic Margin of Safety) is calculated for the simplified fuselage structure made of composite sandwich to provide the probabilistic reasonable evidence that the classical design method based on the safety factor cannot ensure the structural safety. In this phase, the probability density function estimated by CMCS(Crude Monte-Carlo Simulation) is used. Furthermore, the RBDO(Reliability-Based Design Optimization) under the probabilistic constraint are performed, and the RBDO-MPDF(RBDO by Moving Probability Density Function) is proposed for an efficient computation. The examined results in this paper can be helpful for advanced design techniques to ensure the reliability of structures under the uncertainty and computationally inexpensive RBDO methods.

We propose an accurate and efficient estimation method of transverse shear stresses for analysis and design of laminated composite structures by 4-node quadrilateral degenerated shell elements. To get proper distributions of transverse shear stresses in each layer, we use 3-dimensional equilibrium equations instead of constitutive equations with shear correction factors which vary diversely according to the shapes of shell sections. Three dimensional equilibrium equations are integrated through the thickness direction with complete polynomial membrane stress fields, which are recovered by REP (Recovery by Equilibrium in Patches) recovery method. The 4-node quadrilateral degenerated shell element used in this paper has drilling degrees of freedom and shear stresses derived from assumed strain fields that are set up at natural coordinate systems. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed estimation method attains reasonable accuracy and efficiency compared with other methods and FE analysis using 4-node degenerated shell elements.
As aerospace industry has been activated recently, it is required to commercialize composite analysis software. Until now, commercial software has been mainly used for analyzing composites, but it has been difficult to use due to high price and limited functions. In order to solve this problem, automatic analysis software for both in-plane and corner radius strength, which are all made on-line and generalized, has recently been developed. However, these have the disadvantage that they can not be analyzed simultaneously with multiple failure criteria. In this paper, we propose a method to greatly improve the processing speed while simultaneously handling the analysis of multiple failure criteria using a parallel processing platform that only works with a GPU equipped with a CUDA core. We have obtained satisfactory results when the analysis speed is experimented on the vast structure data.

In this paper, the densification of a carbon/carbon composite during a chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process is studied using a chemo-mechanical model. The multi-physics numerical model, developed in the previous research, couples computational fluid dynamics and major chemical reactions in the reactor. The model is especially utilized to study the effect of flow behavior around the preform on the densification. Four different types of "flow-guide" structures are placed to alter the gas flow around the preform. It is shown that the flow pattern and speed around the preform can be controlled by the guide structures. The process simulations demonstrate that the average density and/or density distribution of the preform can be improved by controlling the gas flow around the perform. In this study, a full industrial-scale reactor and process parameter were used.
Most of studies for the ground load and ground behavior of landing gear have been conducted with an assumption that the structure of landing gear was rigid body. The assumption of rigid body during design process results in many errors or discrepancy. High ground load occurs in 3 directions on the shock absorbing strut during landing. This ground load initiated high structural deformation. In this study, the flex-multi-body dynamics is applied to adapt flexible bodies, so the results of analysis can be described close to landing gears real behaviour.
In this paper, in order to examine the effect of fiber volume fraction non-uniformity in thickness direction on the buckling load of cylindrical composite lattice structures, we modified the equation of buckling load of the cylindrical composite lattice structures proposed by Vasiliev. The thickness of each layer of the rib was varied by fiber volume fraction, and material properties were applied differently by using the rule of mixture. Also, we performed linear buckling analysis by varying the structure size, thickness, and average value of the fiber volume fraction of finite element model. Finally, by comparing the calculation results of the buckling load of the equivalent model using the modified buckling load equation and the results of the finite element analysis, we found that the fiber volume fraction non-uniformity in thickness direction can reduce the buckling load of the cylindrical composite lattice structure.
The failure of composite sandwich structures with thickness and material variation was studied. The main body of the structure is sandwich plate made of the carbon composite face and Aluminum honeycomb core. It is connected with composite laminated flange without core through transition region of tapered sandwich panel with foam core. Tension and compression tests were conducted for the total of 6 panels, 3 for each. Test results showed that the panels under compression are vulnerable to the face failure along the material discontinuity line between two different cores. However the failure load of which panel does not show such failure can carry 16% more load and fails in honeycomb core and face debonding. For the tensile load, the extensive delamination failure was observed at the corner radius which connects the panel and the flange. The average failure load for compression is about 7 times the tensile failure load. Accordingly, these sandwich structures should be applied to the components that endure the compressive loadings.
An impact localization for a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite plate was performed using the multiplexed fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm. We found that the optimal impact localization with the maximum error of 31.82 mm and the averaged error of 6.31 mm are obtained when the error threshold (ET) and constant level (CL) are 0.3 nm and 110, respectively. Moreover, the detailed process of impact localization under certain optimal parameters and the relevant results were thoroughly investigated. We conclude that the multiplexed FBG sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm are suitable for an impact localization on composite structures, and expect that they can be utilized for various structural health monitoring (SHM) in the future.

There are a number of factors affecting the continued airworthiness of composite structure. Unlike metal structure, damages made in manufacturing processes or maintenance repair procedures need to be considered. The different levels of degradation and damage, which may occur, must be considered for structural substantiation of static strength, stiffness, flutter, and damage tolerance. This can start with an evaluation of environmental effects for the particular composite material. Matrix-dominated composite properties, such as compressive strength, are most sensitive to moisture absorption and temperatures. Static strength substantiation includes the smaller damages that will not be detected in production or maintenance inspection while damage tolerance addresses larger damages that need to be repaired once discovered. In this paper, we intend to list the airworthiness regulations and advisory circular that are deemed closely related to the certification of composite airplanes.

The purpose of designing composite lattice structure which applied to launching vehicle and tactical missile body is to minimize the thickness and weight for applied load. It is usually made of carbon fiber; fabricating with filament winding process over silicon mold, and provided with a window opening for inspection purpose if necessary. In this paper compression test is conducted without window opening in lattice structure and preliminary FEA is carried out to confirm its accuracy. And then FEA is performed for the case of window opening to evaluate the soundness and the safety factor of the structure. We have calculated for two kinds of window shape; rectangular one and hexagonal one. And we have calculated safety factors of the lattice structure with window opening in every case based on failure strength of rib and knot with varying the thickness and location of the window for hexagonal shape. Through our investigation, we have found out the followings; (1) the hexagonal shaped window is shown higher safety factor than rectangular one, (2) a window in a certain location is shown higher safety factor than others, (3) although the soundness of window structure is improved as increasing its thickness, a window of a certain thickness is shown higher safety factor than others because of stress concentration.
