A study on the life-time expectation of a CR-modified NR rubber composite through the change of thermal degradation characteristics was performed using both isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermomechanical analysis (TMA). Master curves at reference temperature of $90^{\circ}C$ could be obtained with shift factor $a_T$, which was determined empirically using Time-Temperature Superposition Principle (TTSP). Activation energies could be calculated from the slope of Arrhenius plot of shift factor and showed similar values of $E_{a,TGA}$= 41.2 and $E_{a,TMA}$= 54.5 kJ/mol, respectively. It was considered from the results that chemical degradation resulting weight loss of the sample might be closely related to a physical degradation such as the dimensional change of the sample.
Polymers are introduced to neat asphalt to prepare self-healing asphalt. The polymers are Surlyn, Nylon and polyethyleneterephtalate(PET). Since they are known as having high intermolecular force, they have high processing temperature. Therefore they are hardly introduced into the asphalt as bulk state. So in this study, they are introduced as solutions. Polymer-modified asphalts showed excellent modification effect and also healing effect. 5% polymer added asphalt showed more than 18% increased tensile strength. This tensile strength increment can be explained by polymer's intermolecular forces. Especially Surlyn interacts with asphalt molecules by hydrogen bonding and also with metals in asphalt by ionic bonding. When it comes to healing aspect the healing efficiency of Surlyn increased to 138% based on tensile strength. That of PET increased to 141% based on complex modulus and in case of Nylon it increased to 131% based on impact strength. This tells that in dealing with healing efficiency the important considering factors are not only the intermolecular forces of the polymers but also the interaction between the polymer and asphalt molecules.
The technique of producing thin film plays a crucial role in modern science and technology as well as in industrial purposes. Numerous efforts have been made to get high quality thin film through surface treatment of materials. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) are two of the most popular deposition techniques used in both scientific study and industrial use. It is well known that the film deposited by PVD and CVD commonly possesses a columnar microstructure which affects many film properties. In recent years, various types of deposition sources which feature high material uses and excellent film properties have been developed. Electromagnetic levitation source appeared as an alternative deposition source to realize high deposition rate for industrial use. Complex film structures such as nano multilayer and multi-components have been prepared to achieve better film properties. Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) has also been developed as a technique to engineer the columnar structure of thin films on the micro- and nanoscale. In this paper, the trends and major issues of thin film technology based on PVD and CVD have been discussed together with the prospect of thin film technology.
3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals) ceramics have excellent mechanical properties including high fracture toughness, good abrasion resistance as well as chemical and biological stability. As a result, they are widely used in mechanical and medical components such as bearings, grinding balls, and hip implants. In addition, they provide excellent light transmittance, biocompatibility, and can match tooth color when used as a dental implant. Recently, given the materials' resemblance to human teeth, these ceramics have emerged as an alternative to titanium implants. Since the introduction of CAD/CAM in the manufacture of ceramic implants, they've been increasingly used for prosthetic restoration where aesthetics and strength are required. In this study, to improve the surface roughness of zirconia implants, we modified the 3Y-TZP surface with a biocomposite of hydroxyapatite and forsterite using room temperature spray coating methods, and investigated the mixed effect of the two powders on the evolution of surface microstructure, i.e., coating thickness and roughness, and biological interaction during the in vitro test in SBF solution. We compared improvement in bioactivity by observing dissolution and re-precipitation on the specimen surface. From the results of in vitro testing in SBF solution, we confirmed improvement in the bioactivity of the 3Y-TZP substrate after surface modification with a biocomposite of hydroxyapatite and forsterite. Surface dissolution of the coating layer and the precipitation of new hydroxyapatite particles was observed on the modified surface, indicating the improvement in bioactivity of the zirconia substrate.
Unsaturated polyester(UP) resin is one of the major thermosetting resins. It is very useful as the matrix resin of the composite material because of its low viscosity. The polymer resin, however, has several drawbacks; The volume shrinkage occurs during the crosslinking reaction of the UP resin with styrene monomer and the resulting polymer is weak to the alkali and also brittle. The mechanical properties of UP resin can be improved by blending various materials. In this study, polyurethane(PU) was used as a modifier in order to enhance the toughness of the UP resin. The goal of the research is to study the effect of the polyol molecular weight as a PU soft segment and the PU contents on the toughness of PU-modified UP resins. UP/PU polymer network may occur through the reaction between isocyanate group in the methyldiisocyanate(MDI) and hydroxyl group in the UP molecules. The maximum toughness value was shown at 2 wt% of the PU content. This effect results from the incorporation of the PU segment into the UP resin.
Over the past decade, there have been significant advancement in the field of electrospinning area. This study has focused on preparing yarn using polycarbonate (PC) nanofibers including modified multi-walled carbon nanotube (mMWNT) by solution electrospinning process using the mixture of solvents consisting of tretrahydronfuran (THF) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In order to enhance the dispersion, MWNT was chemically modified. TEM analysis for the prepared PC/mMWNT nanofibers reveals that mMWNT was well-dispersed into the PC nanofiber matrix. Also with increasing contents of mMWNT, thermal stability of PC/mMWNT nanofibers was improved than that of PC nanofibers. Moreover when 3 to 5 wt% of mMWNT was added, the nanofibers showed good electrical properties expecting antistatic effect, ranging 109.1~109.5 ${\Omega}$. It was confirmed that the multi-filament fibers using PC/mMWNT had $60{\sim}100{\mu}m$ in diameter and 4~5 cm in length.
In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride ($SOCl_2$) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxyl groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) to make MWCNT-MPTMS. The MWCNT-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA composite particles with 3 kinds of emulsifiers, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) as a cationic, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an anionic and polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) as a nonionic emulsifier. Morphologies of composite emulsions were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphologies of emulsion polymerized MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA with SDBS showed more uniform particle size distribution compared to those of other two emulsifiers used emulsions. MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA showed $3.4^{\circ}C$ higher $T_g$ compared to pristine MWCNT/PMMA due to covalent bond formation at interface of MWCNT-MPTMS and PMMA.

Hydrocarbons containing carbon double bonds are generally called olefins and it is extensively used in petro-chemical industry as essential base material. Especially, olefins are essential in polymer synthesis and thus the effective separation and purification of olefins from gas mixture are very important and it gives significant positive effect on the future industrial development. In this study, we fabricated polymeric composite membrane based on poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) for propylene/nitrogen separation and enhancement of its separation performance by grafting amphiphilic copolymer. Furthermore, to accelerate facilitated transport for propylene molecules, Ag salt ($AgBF_4$) and ionic liquid ($EMIM-BF_4$) was incorporated to polymer composite membranes. The neat PTMSP membrane exhibited extremely high gas permeance and low gas selectivity due to its high free volume. To address this issue, PTMSP was grafted with poly(oxyethylene glycol methacrylate) (POEM) and poly(ethylene glycol) behenyl ether methacrylate (PEGBEM). Additionally, the additives such as $AgBF_4$ and $EMIM-BF_4$ further increased the propylene permeance, resulting in increment of propylene/nitrogen selectivity.
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) serving as a separator that can prevent the permeation of unreacted fuels as well as an electrolyte that selectively transports protons from the anode to the cathode has been considered a key component of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The perfluorinated sulfonic acid-based PEMs, represented by Nafion®, have been commercialized in PEMFC systems due to their high proton conductivity and chemical stability. Nevertheless, these PEMs have several inherent drawbacks including high manufacturing costs by the complex synthetic processes and environmental problems caused by producing the toxic gases. Although numerous studies are underway to address these drawbacks including the development of sulfonated hydrocarbon polymer-based PEMs (SHP-PEMs), which can easily control the polymer structures, further improvement of PEM performances and durability is necessary for practical PEMFC applications. Therefore, this study focused on the various strategies for the development of SHP-PEMs with outstanding performance and durability by 1) introducing cross-linked structures, 2) incorporating organic/inorganic composites, and 3) fabricating reinforced-composite membranes using porous substrates.
