  • The purposes of this study were to identify the changes of postprandial blood pressure and pulse rates of elderly living in nursing homes by time and position after a meal. Blood pressure and pulse rates of 141 elderly aged over 65 years were measured at before the meal to 90 minutes after the meal by 15 min. interval. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, repeated measures of ANOVA, ANCOVA, and t-test using the SPSS program. There were no significant differences in change of systolic blood pressure and pulse rates by time between sitting group and lying group after meal. The biggest drops in systolic pressure in sitting and lying position were occurred at 30 min and 45min respectively after the meal. There were no significant change in pulse rates except for the immediately after meal in lying position. To prevent complications of postprandial blood pressure reduction, nurses should carefully monitor blood pressure of elderly in lying position at least from 30 min. till to 90 min. after the meal.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of altruism and social trust on giving behavior for COVID-19 among citizens and the differences by gender and age. To this end, this study conducted analyses with a sample of 2,006 regular citizens from the Giving Korea 2020 survey constructed by the Beautiful Foundation. The main analysed results are as follows. First, citizens' altruism and social trust significantly positively influenced giving behavior for COVID-19. Specifically, when altruism increased by one level, the likelihood of giving participation increased about 3.00 times and the likelihood of giving intention increased about 3.60 times. Second, the influences of citizens' altruism and social trust on giving behavior for COVID-19 were moderated by gender and age. Whereas the influence of altruism on giving participation was more pronounced for women, the influence of altruism on giving intention was more pronounced for young citizens. Also, the influence of social trust on giving intention was more pronounced for young citizens. Based on the results, this study discussed strategies for citizens' giving behavior to overcome a disaster like COVID-19.

  • This study was conducted to examine the latent classes in social exclusion and to analyse empirically the effects on the economic instability of old age by this type. And it also sought to look at whether the influence of old age anxiety varies with the subjective class consciousness of the elderly. Using the 14th data from the Korea General Social Survey (KGSS) in 2016, 1,041 adult males and females aged 18 years old were analyzed at the time of the survey. T-test, potential layer analysis (LCA), and multinomantic analysis of potential groups were conducted using the STATA14 and MPLUS 7 statistical programs. Finally, multi-regression analysis was performed to identify the moderate effect and effects among variables. According to the research, the types of social exclusion were three groups, followed by social exclusion group (49.3%), Multi-dimensional exclusion group (30.9%), and active social participation group (19.7%). The social exclusion group has the lowest possibility of economic, employment, and health exclusion, but the exclusion of formal and informal social activities seem to prominent, and the multi-dimensional exclusion group is more than 50% likely to experience exclusion in all areas. Active social participation are characterized by very active participation in informal social activities. By conducting multinominal logistic regression, it was observed that the social exclusion group included more young people than other groups, and that the multi-dimensional exclusion group included many elderly women without spouses. Finally, multiple regression analysis showed that social exclusion type interacts with subjective class consciousness and affects economic anxiety of old age.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how wish granting influences children with life-threatening medical conditions when it comes to their adaptation to disease with a focus on the mediating effect of resilience and stress caused by disease. Methods: From January 2, 2015 through January 12, 2015, a survey was conducted on 292 children with life-threatening diseases whose wishes were granted through Make-A-Wish Korea. The data were collected using the impact of a wish scale, the Children's Adjustment to Cancer Inventory, the Childhood Cancer Stressor Inventory, and the resilience scale in children with chronic illness. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 20.0 and Amos 21.0. Results: Satisfaction with the wish granting program enhances resilience, and resilience affects stress caused by medical conditions as well as adaptation to disease. Also, stress caused by medical conditions influences adaptation to disease. Conclusion: Wish granting is effective in both facilitating chronically ill children to adjust to disease and reduce their stress from disease. Thus, children with life-threatening medical conditions could be assisted or motivated to adjust to disease by improving satisfaction achieved by wish granting.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate tile effects of polluted Suyeong River water on the water quality of Kwangan-Ri bathing beach. The quantity of pollutant loading of Suyeong River was determined in January 1979, and the directions of tidal currents and the chemical constituents of the Suyeong Bay water were observed in May 1979. The results are as follows: The quantity of total pollutant loading which was discharged into Suyeong Bay is: BOD 75.2ton/day; COD 96.9ton/day; SS 20.5ton/day; ammonia-nitrogen 12.4ton/day; nitrate-nitrogen 430kg/day; nitrite-nitrogen 85.1kg/day; phosphate-phosphorus 594kg/day and total heavy metals 3.01ton/day. Considering the tidal current, the polluted waters of Suyeong River flow off the Kwangan-Ri beach during tile ebb tides, and flow into the Kwangan Ri beach during the flood tides. Consequently, the water quality of Kangan-Ri bathing beach is not suitable for bathing.

  • The purpose of this essay is to explore the methodological standpoint and the meaning of 'Discourse Analysis' in policy science. I discussed it in three dimensions including: 1) the ontological point of view, 2) the epistemological perspective, and 3) researcher's position in policy research. 1) From the ontological standpoint, I explained the policy as a text, context, discourse, and ideology, that is focused on being constructed by the formative power of language. 2) The ontological standpoint produced "the argumentative turn" in the policy analysis, and many policy analysts emphasize the argumentative process of policy making and evaluation. This argumentation process includes the interpretative and critical viewpoints as well as the normative and ethical characteristics of policies in the discourse analysis. We should reexamine reality critically because discourse is ultimately influenced by the prevailing cultural and social norms. Therefore, an interpretative and critical viewpoint is an epistemological perspective in the discourse analysis. This critical approach creates an awareness of the limitations on our thinking under the particular major discourse, and requires the self-reflection within and beyond the discourse. This process leads to the human emancipation. 3) In order to achieve this emancipation, the last approach suggests that we need to scrutinize "the subject" as a researcher, who is also influenced and subjectified by the major discourse and, thus must deconstruct his or herself. Last but not least, we should emphasize the researcher's role as a listener of the minor voice(discourse) and even the silence of the clients.

  • This study aims to examine the attitudes toward online advertisement targeting YouTube content users and to present implications for the direction and regulation of personal media broadcasting advertisement. The study used the data from 'Awareness of On-line Ads and Blocking Tools' conducted by the Korea Press Foundation in 2020. For the statistical analysis, correspondent analysis was employed. The main results followed as: women tended to perceive more discomfort about the ads before the start of the content compared to men, and women in twenties perceived the highest discomfort with intermediate advertisement. Second, respondents who watch more YouTube contents tended to accept more ads to use contents for free. Third, respondents who are willing to use the advertisement blocking service were most aware of the inconvenience of advertisements before starting of YouTube contents. Although users are aware of the inconvenience, the use of advertisement blocking service has not yet been found to be generalized. However, the use of ad blocking service is expected to increase gradually. It would be expected that efforts to regulate advertisement to reduce discomfort about advertisement among users are also required.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the major academic activities of the Korean Gerontological Society (KGS) during the last 40 years in comparison to changes in elderly policies in Korea and also academic trends in gerontology worldwide and the academic activities of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG); based on this analysis, this study aims to propose future directions for the academic progress of the KGS. We examined the major academic activities of the KGS by analyzing the contents of biannual conferences, international conferences, and irregular seminars and policy meetings, using conference booklets, KGS websites, and literature on KGS history. Second, we analyzed the academic activities of the KGS in comparison to changes in elderly policies in Korea, using databases of major newspapers and also the BigKinds search offered by the Korea Press Foundation. Third, the academic activities of the KGS were reviewed in comparison to those of the IAGG and the major aging policy agendas of key international organizations. The study results demonstrate that the KGS has been proactive in conducting diverse multi-disciplinary and international academic activities while promptly responding to both domestic and international changes in elderly policies. But some issues were not properly addressed due to the lack of diversity in its members, and it also should be noted that some issues were not discussed in depth for a sufficient length of time. Henceforth, as the leading academic organization in gerontology with a multi-disciplinary orientation in Korea, the KGS should continue to lead the development and evaluation of aging policies and also actively carry out diverse academic activities in collaboration with international academic societies and organizations.
