This paper is a part of developing a software that predicts the infrared signal emitted from a ground object by considering solar irradiation. The radiance emitted from a surface can be calculated by using the temperature and optical characteristics of the surface object. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is defined as the ratio of reflected radiance to incident irradiance. It is a very important surface reflection property that decides the reflected radiance from the object. In this paper, the spectral radiance received by a remote sensor over the mid-wave infrared(MWIR), and the long-wave infrared(LWIR) regions are computed and compared each other for several different materials. The results show that the optical surface properties such as the BRDF and the emissivity of the object surface can play a major role in generating the infrared signatures of various objects, and the largest infrared signal may reach up to 10 times the smallest one when the infrared signals obtained from a flat plate with different surface conditions under the sun light.
A KRISS-type small integrating sphere with a high spatial radiance uniformity was made using pressed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a reflective rod to calibrate the spectral radiance responsivity of absolute radiant thermometers. The spatial radiance uniformity of the KRISS-type small integrating sphere was ±0.009%, five times higher than the best value reported by foreign national metrology institutions thus far. In addition, we improved the spatial radiance uniformity of a commercial sintered PTFE integrating sphere by a factor of 10.

Vicarious calibration for the satellite sensor relies on simulated TOA (Top-of-Atmosphere) radiances over various targets. In this study, TOA visible radiance was calculated over ocean targets which are located in five different regions over the Indian and Pacific ocean, and its possible use for the satellite sensor calibration was examined. TOA radiances are simulated with the 6S radiative transfer model for the comparison with MODIS/Terra and SeaWiFS measurements. Geometric angles and sensor characteristics of the reference satellites were taken into account for the simulation. AOT (Aerosol Optical Thickness) from MODIS/Terra, pigment concentrations from Sea WiFS, and ozone amount from OMI measurements were used as inputs to the model. Other atmospheric input parameters such as surface wind and total column water vapor were taken from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The 5-day averaged radiances over all targets show that the percent differences between simulated and observed radiances are within about ${\pm}5%$ in year 2005, indicating that the calculated radiances are in good agreement with satellite measurements. It has also been shown that the algorithm can produce the SeaWiFS radiances within about ${\pm}5%$ uncertainty range. It has been suggested that the algorithm can be used as a tool for calibrating the VIS bands within about 5% uncertainty range.
The design and implementation of a radiative temperature measurement system for a flash light are carried out. Since a massive amount of energy is emitted within a very short time, it is impossible to measure the temperature of a flash with a conventional method. It is also irrelevant to measure one with an optical noncontact method. In this paper, a radiative temperature measurement system using the ratio of spectral radiances over mid- and long-wavelength infrared (IR) is designed and implemented. The implemented system utilizes optical bandpass filters to divide the wavelengths within the mid- and long-wavelength IR ranges, and pyroelectric IR detectors to measure the incident optical power of each wavelength-divided channel. It is shown that the measured radiative temperature of a flash is in the range of 1393 to 1455 K. This temperature-measurement system can be utilized to obtain information about the spectral radiance of a flash as a light source, which is of crucial importance to approaching the modeling and simulation of the various effects of a flash.
Purpose: To evaluate blue light hazards of LED lightings in an optical store with blue light radiance used as the quantitative indicators of photobiological hazard. Methods: The spectral radiance of each LED lightings was measured, and blue-light radiance and the corresponding maximum exposure time were calculated. Then each LED lighting was classified according to the risk group from IEC 62471 standard. Results: The yellow LED lightings used in showcases and white LED lightings used on ceilings and logo were classified into risk group RG0. But the white LED lightings used on showcases were classified into risk group RG1. The blue light radiances of white LED lightings used in showcases are dozens of times larger than that of fluorescent lamp. Conclusions: Using the value of the blue light radiance could quantitatively express the blue light hazard to various lightings. It was confirmed that white LED lightings for the showcases had high blue light hazards because of their high luminance and color temperature. Therefore, when replacing lightings in optical shop it is necessary to select the appropriate brightness and color temperature for eye health in the long term.

The clear sky radiance (CSR) is one of the baseline products of the Himawari-8 which was launched on October, 2014. The CSR contributes to numerical weather prediction (NWP) accuracy through the data assimilation; especially water vapor channel CSR has good impact on the forecast in high level atmosphere. The focus of this study is the quality analysis of the CSR of the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. We used the operational CSR (or clear sky brightness temperature) products in JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) as observation data; for a background field, we employed the CSR simulated using the Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) with the atmospheric state from the global model of KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). We investigated data characteristics and analyzed observation minus background statistics of each channel with respect to regional and seasonal variability. Overall results for the analysis period showed that the water vapor channels (6.2, 6.9, and $7.3{\mu}m$) had a positive mean bias where as the window channels(10.4, 11.2, and $12.4{\mu}m$) had a negative mean bias. The magnitude of biases and Uncertainty result varied with the regional and the seasonal conditions, thus these should be taken into account when using CSR data. This study is helpful for the pre-processing of Himawari-8/Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) CSR data assimilation. Furthermore, this study also can contribute to preparing for the utilization of products from the Geo-Kompsat-2A (GK-2A), which will be launched in 2018 by the National Meteorological Satellite Center (NMSC) of KMA.
We have fabricated a spectroadiometric system to measure spectral radiance of optical sources and evaluated its characteristics such as spectral responsivity, nonlinearity, and so on. The measurement system with PMT, Si, InGaAs, and IR-enhanced InGaAs detectors has shown a good linearity and a wide spectral responsivity of 250∼2500 nm. This spectroradiometric system will be used as the primary national standard system of spectral radiance measurements.
To effectively utilize a flash and predict its effects on an infrared device, it is essential to know the infrared characteristics of the flash source. In this paper, a study of the IR characteristics of flash light sources is carried out. The IR characteristics of three flash sources, of which two are combustive and the other is explosive, are measured with an IR characteristic measurement system over the middle- and long-wavelength infrared ranges. From the measurements, the radiances over the two IR ranges and the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted. The IR radiance of flash A is found to be the strongest among the three, followed by those of sources C and B. It is also shown that the IR radiance of flash A is about 10 times stronger than that of flash B, even though these two sources are the same type of flash with the same powder. This means that the IR radiance intensity of a combustive flash source depends only on the amount of powder, not on the characteristics of the powder. From the measured radiance over MWIR and LWIR ranges for each flashes, the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted by fitting the measured data to blackbody radiance. The best-fit radiative temperatures (equivalent to black-body temperatures) of the three flash sources A, B, and C are 3300, 1120, and 1640 K respectively. From the radiance measurements and radiative temperatures of the three flash sources, it is shown that a combustive source radiates more IR energy than an explosive one; this mean, in turn, that the effects of a combustive flash on an IR device are more profound than those of an explosive flash source. The measured IR radiances and radiative temperatures of the flash sources in this study can be used to estimate the effects of flashes on various IR devices, and play a critical role for the modeling and simulation of the effects of a flash source on various IR devices.

Geostationary Ocean Color Imager II (GOCI-II), which are now operated successfully since its launch in 2020, acquires local area images with 12 Level 1B slot images that are sequentially acquired in a 3×4 grid pattern. The boundary areas between the adjacent slots are prone to discontinuity in radiance, which becomes even more clear in the following Level 2 data, and this warrants the precise analysis and correction before the distribution. This study evaluates the relative radiometric biases between the adjacent slots images, by exploiting the overlapped areas across the images. Although it is ideal to derive the statistics from humongous images, this preliminary analysis uses just the scenes acquired at a specific time to understand its general behavior in terms of bias and variance in radiance. Level 1B images of February 21st, 2021 (UTC03 = noon in local time) were selected for the analysis based on the cloud cover, and the radiance statistics were calculated only with the ocean pixels. The results showed that the relative bias is 0~1% in all bands but Band 1 (380 nm), while Band 1 exhibited a larger bias (1~2%). Except for the Band 1 in slot pairs aligned North-South, biases in all direction and in all bands turned out to have biases in the opposite direction that the sun elevation would have caused.
