  • In this paper, we have developed a retrodirective active array operating in the 2 GHz LS band. The retrodirective array has the property of redirecting any electromagnetic wave back to the incoming direction without any priory informations. The system is integrated with phase conjugators and antenna array. Microwave phase conjugators can be implemented by microwave mixers. In this research, 2-port gate mixers using pHEMT and $1{\times}4$ monopole array have been used to achieve the retrodirectivity. The measured results have been compared with the theoretical prediction, and it has been shown that there exists a reasonable agreement between them. The monopole array can be used easily in many areas for simplicity and cost-effective property, and the retrodirective array developed in this research can be applied directly in the base station facilities for the wireless mobile communications. indoor wireless LAN and RFID transponders.

  • This paper presents An efficient method of antenna placement considering EMI(Electromagnetic Interference) between equipments which are mounted on the UAV(Unmanned Air Vehicle). The analysis is accomplished for voice communication radio, control datalink, TCAS(Traffic Alert Collision & Avoidance System) and GPS(Global Positioning System) which are vulnerable to EMI because the frequencies are close to each other. There are two steps for analysis procedure : The first one is selecting antenna position on the UAV by monitoring return loss and pattern variation of each antenna. The second one is analyzing EMI via antennas between equipments. In the EMI analysis, spurious level of each transmitter, coupling level between antennas and system noise property are considered. This procedure can be used to predict EMI between equipments in development stage.

  • A catalytic burner that utilizes the thermal energy from fossil fuels without the emission of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) has been developed. For this purpose, the newly developed burner has two features: firstly, it is in the shape of a flat mat so as to maximize its heating surface, and secondly, it adopts premixed combustion so that it can be used in a closed space. In the present study, the burner was used in a radiation-type industrial dryer. This dryer yields thermal energy in the form of thermal radiation in the infrared regime, which has been proved to be effective for drying organic substances under low-moisture conditions. Analysis of the experimental data has proved that the thermal efficiency of the dryer is better correlated to the moisture than to the dry rate

  • This paper presents 3D simulation by STAR-CCM+ for lean premixed combustion in a stationary gas turbine combustor with separate pilot and main nozzles. The constant for the source term in the flame area density transport equation was modified to account for a low global equivalence ratio and validated against measurement data. A Partially-premixed Coherent Flame Model(PCFM) involves propagation of a laminar premixed flame with the predicted flame surface density and equilibrium assumption in the burned gas with spatial inhomogeneity. The conditions for cooling by radiation and convection are considered for accurate determination of the heat flux on the wall. A parametric study is of the pilot-fuel-to-total-fuel-ratio is carried out. A chemical reactor network (CRN) was constructed on the basis of the 3D simulation results and compared against measurements of NOx.

  • A two-dimensional mathematical model was developed to predict the temperature and moisture-content profiles of a tumble dryer during infrared drying. The model is based on the movements of liquid water and moisture in the object and on the fluid and heat transfer in the drying air. The model was solved by the finite volume analysis for the fluid, temperature, and radiation intensity fields. After deriving the governing equations and developing the two-dimensional tumble dryer models, numerical investigations were carried out to examine the effects of various parameters such as the heater temperature and the heating patterns on the drying mechanism of the tumble dryer. All the results show that the drying time can be reduced by using the IR heater.

  • This paper presents an electric field distribution in a reverberation chamber using cylindrical diffuser. The characteristics of electric field distributions are compared with QRD(Quadratic Residue Diffuser) and cylindrical diffuser for $1{\sim}3$ GHz frequency band. The FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to analyze the field characteristics, and the field uniformity. At 2 GHz, the standard deviation and the tolerance of test volume in the reverberation chamber are improved by 0.11 dB, 0.43 dB for the case of cylindrical diffuser. The field strength is increased by 43.2 dBmV/m vs QRD's of 36.6 dBmV/m. Comparing with QRD's, the characteristic of polarization is also improved. These results show that reverberation chamber using cylindrical diffuser can be used alternative facility for measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity.

  • A temperature control system is very important part in many industrial applications. Typical development procedures for temperature control system consist of several stages such as conceptual system design, construction of physical system, controller design based on the mathematical model for the system, and performance test. Since the mathematical model is usually obtained with the aid of system identification technique based on repeated experiments after construction of the physical system, the above procedures require very large amount of time and cost. It takes also large amount of time in the controller design and performance test procedures. In this paper, a virtual development scheme, which can predict the performance of the temperature control system prior to construction of physical system, for rapid validation of the initial system design is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is shown by using SISO (Single Input Single Output) example.

  • We investigate the star formation rate, stellar mass, and gas-phase metallicity of local starburst galaxies with different star formation time scales based on their optical spectra. The observation is made using the longslit spectrograph attached to the 4K CCD on the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory 1.8m telescope, targeting 21 Wolf-Rayet galaxies as young starbursts and 13 UV excess galaxies as slightly older starbursts. A Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram analysis shows that 50% of the observed targets are pure star-forming galaxies while only 15% are classified as Active Galactic Nuclei. Fraction of galaxies that reside in composite region is higher in UV excess galaxies than in Wolf-Rayet galaxies, suggesting that the AGN development requires extra time after the onset of the star formation. Most of the observed starburst galaxies have stellar masses of $10^{9-11}M_{\odot}$ and stellar formation rates of $0.01-100M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, and their star formation rates are consistent with that of the SDSS star forming main sequence galaxies of similar stellar mass. There is no significant difference between Wolf-Rayet galaxies and UV excess galaxies in terms of the stellar mass and star formation rate. We also see a mass-metallicity relation for local starbursts with slightly lower metallicity for a given stellar mass, which implies the existence of a strong feedback activity due to the star formation in these galaxies.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel printed helix antenna for RFID reader in UHF band. The printed strip line of the antenna is first wound up outside a polygonal shaped layer and then the winding continues on an inner layer to control the overall gain and the radiation pattern. In addition, the winding pitch angles on each layer have either negative or positive values resulting in the broad CP bandwidth. The detail structure of the antenna was optimized using Pareto genetic algorithm(GA), so as to obtain excellent performances for RFID reader antennas. The optimized two-layered polygonal helix was fabricated on the cardboard of a flexible substrate and the performances were measured and compared with the simulations. The fabricated antenna was made up of copper tape which can adhere to a flexible cardboard and had 21.4 % matching bandwidth, 31.9 % CP bandwidth, readable range of $5.5m^2$ with kr=3.2. Also based on the current distribution of the strip line of the antenna and sensitivity of the antenna bents points, we confirmed that the antenna has the quarter-wave transformer near the feed for the broad matching bandwidth and radiates the traveling wave for the broad CP bandwidth using the bent strip line.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine how effectively waste tire recycled material mixed with flame retardant work in combating fire. As discovered in the previous study, waste tire mixed with cement mortar has more insulation capacity. However, this mortar is weak against fire. Therefore flame retardant, with a specific proportional mix, will be added to increase its fire prevention capacity. Tests will be made in accordance with ISO 5657 procedures for measuring fire ignition time, flame and shape variation of test pieces at the Building Material Test Institute. The test piece will be set up with horizontal levels having a constant radiation heat of $1{\sim}5W/cm^2$. Temperature transfers and increases from the surface into the interior. Combustible gases result due to pyrolysis, and regular contact is maintained between the fire source and the center of the test piece for assessment purposes. Ignition has not been occurred without adding retardant meaning that there is almost no possibility of ignition of waste tire particle. This fact can be considered as fire load to appreciate a volume of combustion materials. Flame is not occurred due to heat-absorbing effect by adding non-organic series retardant into waste tire particle. Conclusions have been summarized as follows; 1) Combustion of building material can be decreased by adding retardant to waste tire-mixing mortar. But compressive strength and insulation capacity of the material should be measured later. 2) Firing prevention and ignition are main points of building fire. Reasonable fire engineering assessment of interior material should be made for establishing effective disaster prevention system.
