Correlations Among the Berg Balance Scale, Gait Parameters, and Falling in the Elderly (노인에서 Berg 균형 척도, 보행 변수, 그리고 넘어짐과의 관계)

  • This study examined the correlations among the Berg Balance Scale, which is a clinical tool used to evaluate balance ability, spatiotemporal parameters of gait, and falling; determined the parameters most closely related to falling; and identified a discriminatory parameter and its predictability. Thirty-four subjects aged 72 to 92 years participated in this study. Following a questionnaire survey about falling, the Berg Balance Scale and spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured. The results revealed that the incidence of falls increased with aging and an accompanying reduction in the flexion range of motion of the hip joint. The gait characteristics of elderly people who fell easily included a slower walking speed, shorter stride, and longer stance time than other elderly. When the cutoff score was set at 45, the Berg Balance Scale was able to identify correctly those individuals who truly have experience of falling than when the cutoff score was set at 39. But when the cutoff score was set at 39, the scale's specificity identifying correctly those individuals who truly have not experience of falling was higher than at the cutoff score of 45. Therefore, the Berg Balance Scale is an appropriate screening method in a clinical setting for the early detection of elderly people at risk of falling. In conclusion, elderly people with a Berg Balance Scale score. below 45 are the most likely to fall owing to their decreased balance ability.

A Study on Crash Analysis of Vehicle and Guardrail using a LS-DYNA Program (LS-DYNA 프로그램을 이용한 차량과 가드레일의 충돌해석에 관한 연구)

  • A study is to research crash barriers for vehicles that prevent road breakaway of vehicles and protect car passengers and pedestrians as absorbing impulse. Protection performance tests on vehicle passengers were simulated by using a LS-DYNA program. Through repetitive simulation on various speed and angles, passenger protection performance according to different impact condition was contemplated. Variable setting for the simulation was calculated as the mean weight of domestic car sales. By analyzing NASS (National Automotive Sampling System) of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) of the U.S., the actual speed and collision angle section of accidents were computed. As a result, we confirmed that THIV (Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD (Post-impact Head Deceleration) are increased according to the impact speed and angle. Also, when the vehicle hit the guardrail post, we could be confirmed that the passenger protection performance greatly decreased.

Changes in Medio-lateral Knee Joint Reaction Force of Patients with Over-pronation during Gait Due to Insole Parameters - A Case Study (인솔 설계 변수에 따른 발목 과-회내 환자의 보행 시 좌우 방향 무릎 관절 하중의 변화 - 사례 연구)

  • The ankle over-pronation causes the mechanical overloading transferred to proximal areas (i.e. knees or hips) over time. Thus, the over-pronation is recognized as a contributory factor in a wide variety of musculo-skeletal pathologies in lower extremities. Commonly, over-pronated ankles are treated using specially designed insoles that support medial heels and correct the posture of lower limbs. However, the biomechanical effects of the insoles are not yet fully understood, so there still are controversies whether such insoles really have clinical significance. In this study, in order to verify the effects of insoles and determine the best shape of the insoles, we examined how the medio-lateral knee joint reaction force changes due to insole conditions through a case study about a subject. As a result, it is revealed that the medial heel post, which drastically reduced the peak medio-lateral knee joint reaction force, has significant effects on the gait of the over-pronated patients. However, in case that the arch support is combined together, the positive effect of the medial heel post may rather decrease.

The Impact of the Supply Regulation on the Price in Farming Olive Flounder (출하량 조절이 양식 넙치가격에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to analyse the relationship between the price and the supply in the farming Olive Flounder's production area market. The data used in this study correspond to daily price and supply quantity covering time period from January 1, 2007 to June 30. 2013. The analysis methods of cointegration and vector error correction model are employed. The empirical results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the price and the supply follow random walks and they are integrated of order 1. Second, the price and the supply are cointegrated. Third, vector error correction model suggests that the relationship between the price change ration and the supply quantity change ratio has negative and feedback effect exists in the long-run, but the disequilibrium between the price and the supply is corrected by the supply quantity. Finally, vector error correction model suggests that the supply quantity leads the price in the short-run. This indicates that the decrease(increase) of the supply quantity results in the increase(decrease) of the price.

Relationship Between the Postural Alignments and Spatio-temporal Gait Parameters in Elderly Woman (여성 노인의 자세 정렬과 시공간 보행 변수 사이의 연관성)

  • PURPOSE: Aging causes changes in the postural alignment and gait due to changes in the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. On the other hand, the relationship between the changes in posture alignment and gait is unclear. This study examined the relationship between the postural alignment and spatiotemporal gait parameters in Korean elderly women. METHODS: Thirty-two-healthy elderly women participated in this study. All subjects were assessed for their posture alignment and gait ability. Stepwise multiple linear regression was performed to determine to what extent the postural alignments could explain the spatiotemporal gait parameters. RESULTS: Coronal head angle was moderately correlated with the velocity (r = -.51), normalized velocity (r = -.46) and gait-stability ratio (r = .58) (p < .05). The trunk angle was moderately correlated with the normalized velocity (r = -.32) and gait-stability ratio (r = .32) and weakly correlated with the velocity (r = -.28) (p < .05). The coronal shoulder angle was moderately correlated with the swing phase (r = -.57), stance phase (r = .56), single limb stance (r = -.56) and double limb stance (r = .51) (p < .05). The coronal head angle and trunk angle accounted for 36% of the variance in velocity, 33% variance in normalized velocity and 46% variance in the gait-stability ratio (p < .05). The coronal shoulder angle accounted for 32% variance in the swing phase, 32% variance in the stance phase, 31% variance in the single limb stance and 26% variance in the double limb stance (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Changes in posture alignment in elderly women may serve as a biomarker to predict a decrease in walking ability due to physical aging.

Development of Selection Model of Subway Station Influence Area (SIA) in New town using Categorical and Regression Tree (CART) (CART분석을 이용한 신도시지역의 지하철 역세권 설정에 관한 연구)

  • In general, based on criteria of subway law, radius 500m from subway station is defined as SIA(Subway Station Influence Area). Therefore, in this paper, selection models of SIA are developed to identify appropriate SIA for recently developed 4 new towns based based on CART analysis. As a result, following outputs are obtained; (1) walking distance from subway station is the most influential factor to define SIA (2) SIAs vary with new towns (i.e., bundang city: 856m, ilsan sanbon city 508m, pyungchon city 495m), and (3) walking distance from subway station is influential to land price of SIA. In addition, bundang and pyungchon new town are more affected in land price and walking distance. Therefore, it is desirable for current definition of SIA (radius 500m from subway station) to reflect characteristics of land use and walking distance in the new towns.

Research trends in rehabilitation program for disabled applying virtual reality technology in Korea (가상현실기술을 적용한 국내 장애인재활프로그램 연구동향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the trends in research on the effects of virtual reality technology applied to rehabilitation for disabled. I have collected 60 papers published in Korea(2000-2014), and analyzed it by the P.I.C.O. method. As a result, adults and the elderly are most common subjects, and projection type has been used frequently in researches. It were included mostly balance, upper extremity function, and gait that the dependent variables represents the intervention effects. I interpreted it as the ICF factors. So, research topics were the most common mobility, in contrast to educational, vocational, recreational area as dealing with the participation area is very small. In the future, we should focused on social aspects for useful intervention in real life of people with disabilities based on virtual reality technology, and virtual reality technology should be easy to apply in terms of cost and accessibility.

  • This study describes an analytical and experimental investigation of the pedestrian steel-deck truss bridge in the City of Rochester, New York, U.S.A. This investigation was undertaken to provide assurance that this important bridge continues to be functional for this use. An ambient vibration experiment on full-scale structures is a way of assessing the reliability of the various assumptions employed in the mathematical models used in analysis. It is also the most reliable way of determining the structural parameters of major importance in structural dynamics, such as the mode shapes and the associated natural frequencies. Pedestrian-induced vibrations have been measured on the bridge to determine the displacement and the vertical and transverse dynamic characteristics of the steel deck truss. In the analytical modeling, three-dimensional finite element analysis was developed and validated against the ambient tests.

The Change in the Influence of Environmental Factors on Depression by the COVID-19 Pandemic (COVID-19 팬데믹 직전과 직후 우울감에 영향을 미치는 지역환경 요인의 변화 연구)

  • This research aims to compare and analyze changes in local physical environmental factors affecting mental health before and after the occurrence of COVID-19. The research question is: "Did the influence of environmental factors affecting mental health change after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic?" To examine the research question, the study considered the year 2019, right before COVID-19, and the year 2020, the year when COVID-19 occurred, as the temporal scope of the research. For the empirical analysis, we used multilevel logistic analysis was conducted using data from the Community Health Survey for each year and the National Statistical Office (KOSIS). The results can be summarized as follows: After the occurrence of COVID-19, physical environmental factors showed stronger associations with mental health compared to before the emergence of COVID-19. Specifically, it was found that park area per thousand people and the proportion of pedestrian-only road areas were further associated with a decrease in depression. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need for improving and constructing the physical environment in local communities for preventing mental health issues during disaster situations such as COVID-19.

A Study on Transporter Trajectory Prediction in Industrial Environments (산업 현장에서의 트랜스포터 경로 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Despite policy and institutional changes to prevent accidents in the workplace, industrial accidents continue to occur. Accidents related to safety at industrial sites are complex tasks that involve considering various variables, and research to address and minimize these accidents is ongoing. In this paper, we studied the trajectory prediction of transporters used in industrial areas. In a transporter work environment measuring 3.4km by 2.3km, the coordinates of transporters were learned through PECNet, resulting in an average error of ADE 1.27m and FDE 1.13m. This research will contribute to preventing and avoiding accidents by predicting not only the path of transporters but also the paths of mobile vehicles and pedestrians in various fields.
