Coating is one of the methods used to solve the problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures. There are few research reported in the literature regarding the effect of zinc-coating on flexural behavior compared to epoxy coating. The objective of this study was to determine whether zinc-coated rebar adversely affects flexural behavior. Concrete beams reinforced with black or zinc-coated steel were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of rebar surface coating with zinc, steel ratio used and cover depth. The study concentrated on comparing crack pattern, crack width, deflection and strain. The ultimate flexural capacity of beams reinforced with zinc-coated bars was not different from that of black steel reinforced beams. The results from deflection and crack width measurements were indicative of no significant variation for the different rebar surface conditions. In addition, it was found that load-strain curve of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel was similar to that of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of zinc-coated rebar had no adverse effect on flexural behavior compared to the use of black rebar.

This paper presents the results of flexural test of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP and conventional steel reinforcement for comparison. The beams were tested under a static load to examine the effects of the reinforcement ratio and compressive strength of concrete on cracking, deflection, ultimate capacity, and modes of failure. The test results showed that the ultimate capacity of the GFRP-reinforced beams increased with increasing reinforcement ratio and concrete strength, showing a 41.3~51.6% increase compared to steel reinforced beams. The deflections at maximum loads of the GFRP reinforced beams were 4.1~6.3 times higher that of steel reinforced beams. The measured deflections of GFRP reinforced beams decreased approximately 31% compared to the theoretical predictions because the theoretical flexural stiffness was underestimated at the maximum loads. For the GFRP-reinforced beams, the ACI code 440 design method resulted in conservative flexural strength estimates.

Measurement of beam deflection is a common procedure to determine proper behavior of the structure. Either LVDT (Linear Variable Displacement Transformer) or strain gauge is usually used in experiments. A newly developed coordinate reading measurement system can be also applied for the deflection measurements. In this study, an experimental measurement was made on a laboratory size beam specimen to examine the possibility of the use of such coordinate measurement system. Results have shown the possibility of utilizing the new system for beam deflection measurement.

In this study, the resilient modulus test and Light Weight Deflectormeter (LWD) test were conducted to simulate the moving vehicle load for the evaluation of the internal failure of epoxy asphalt pavement. The Measured displacement in the resilient modulus test of epoxy asphalt concrete showed very little residual deformation under repeated loads unlike the conventional asphalt. Therefore, the test results were evaluated as a normal state due to its similarity with elastic deformation. The deflection results from the resilient modulus tests were converted to the surface deflection modulus and the normal range of surface deflection modulus was estimated applying LWD measurement of 1 SIGMA level. Internal failure of pavements were estimated using the suspicious failure range at $60^{\circ}C$ and hysteresis. Internal moisture penetration and a decrease in bonding were observed in partial areas at $140{\mu}m$ of surface deflection. However, the areas showed inflection points in the hysteresis. Field investigation by suggested criterion indicated a high degree of accuracy.

Recently, high-strength concrete has been frequently used for long-span bridges and high-rise buildings. Deflection of reinforced concrete structures is uncertain, so that many researchers have proposed various equations in order to predict deflection through experiments. Domestic concrete specification offers a procedure to evaluate deflection using effective moment of inertia which was proposed by Branson. However, it is inaccurate for high strength concrete compared to the method suggested in Eurocode 2 in that Eurocode 2 predicts deflection by using curvature integration of effective moment of inertia. In this study, experimental data about deflection of reinforced concrete beams were analyzed to compare domestic standard and Eurocode 2.
The test results of high-strength concrete beam specimens, which have various combinations of different types of flexural reinforcement and short fibers, were compared with the prediction results of codes, guidelines and models proposed by researchers. The theoretical calculation based on the ultimate strength method of the KCI and ACI Code underestimated the ultimate moments of FRP bar-reinforced beams without fibers. The models proposed by ACI 544.4R and Campione predicted the ultimate moment capacities inaccurately for the FRP bar-reinforced beam with steel fibers, because these models do not consider the increased ultimate compressive strain of fiber reinforced concrete. Bischoff's deflection model predicted the service load deflections reasonably well, while the deflection model of ACI Committee 440 underestimated the deflection of FRP bar-reinforced beams. Because the ACI 440 expression, used to predict member deflection, cannot directly apply to the beams reinforced with different types of reinforcing bars, an alternative method to estimate the deflections of beams with different types of reinforcing bars using the ACI 440 expression was proposed. In addition, Bischoff's approach for computing deflection was extended to include deflection after yielding of the steel reinforcement in the beams reinforced with steel and FRP bars simultaneously.

The member deflection is one of the most important considerations for the serviceability evaluation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, and the concept of the effective moment of inertia has been generally used for its estimation. However, the actual service load applied on an existing RC beam may not be easily obtained, for which the estimation of beam deflection by existing methods can be difficult work. Therefore, based on the close relationships between cracks and deflection in a RC beam, this study proposed a method to estimate the deflection of RC beams directly from the condition of cracks not using the actual loads acting on the member as its input data. The proposed method extensively utilized the relationships among sums of crack widths, average strains, and curvatures, and modification factors obtained from regression analysis were also introduced to improve its accuracy. The deflections of members were successfully estimated by the proposed method independent from applied loads, which was also easy to apply compared to the existing methods based on the effective moment of inertia. This new method, however, has limitations in its applicability in that it is less accurate than the existing methods because the magnitude of acting load is not involved in the estimation process of member deflection, and that it requires the measurement of crack widths along the whole length of a member.
With steel and concrete composite beams, the incomplete interaction between the steel and the concrete slab leads to an appreciable increase in beam deflections. Moreover, encased composite beams using a deep deck plate or hollow-core PC slabs are critical to deflection due to their inherent geometry. In this paper, by using the calculation tools that were developed for a previous study on the deflection of encased composite beams considering the slip effects and load-slip curve, the shear bond stress and additional deflection induced due to interface slip of the encased composite beam are presented. It was found that the slip effects significantly contribute to the encased composite beam deflections and result in stiffness reduction of up to 30% compared to that of full shear interaction beams. The predicted results were compared with the measurement of 18 specimens tested in this study, and comparisons show a high degree of accuracy, within 6%.

In this study, an experiment was performed to monitor the two-dimensional shape of a cantilever composite structure using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. To monitor the shape of a composite structure, a deflection equation developed by NASA was applied and a composite beam attached to three FBG sensors was used. In the experiment, the shape of the composite beam was successfully estimated and an error was evaluated by comparing a real deflection. The error increased with real deflection; therefore, it was compensated by using the linear relationship between the error and the real deflection. After compensating the error, the measured deflection shows good agreement with the real deflection. Finally, the experiment shows that the FBG sensor and the deflection equation are suitable for monitoring the deflection curve of the beam structure with compensation of the error.

Recently, in field of bridge construction, modular technology has been studied to reduce construction period, traffic impact and environmental impact. This study is a part of research related to the modular bridges. The aim of the study is to analyze the structural behavior and evaluate a serviceability for transverse connection of modular slab bridge. A total of four specimens were fabricated. including a control beam for finding the maximum load by static test. And one control beam and two segmental beams were fabricated for cyclic loading test. As the test result, the beams that were introduced 100% of the design prestressing force showed a smaller maximum deflection, residual deflection and crack width than the control beam. The beam for serviceability evaluation was satisfied with structural serviceability limits of the deflection and crack.
