  • In this study the seismic performance of welded steel moment connections to built-up box columns in the existing building built before 1994 Northridge earthquake was evaluated by cyclic tests. According to the test results, the pre-Northridge steel moment connections to the box columns also suffered from brittle fracture similar to that in the H-shaped column connections. However, the flange force transfer mechanism of the box column connections was substantially different from that of the H-shaped column connections, and the patterns of crack propagation may be changed due to the shape of the box column. Therefore, it is required to develop proper details for the box column connections instead of using the research results for H-shaped column connections in order to enhance the seismic performance the connections.

  • This study examined the one-way shear in concrete beam region and shear friction in joint region of a hybrid H-steel-reinforced concrete (HSRC) beam system with a simple ductile connection. One-way shear tests were conducted under overhanging beam system with a shear span-to-depth ratio of 1.6. Simple beams for shear friction were tested under two-point symmetrical top loads producing a clear shear span-to-depth ratio of 0.1. Test results showed that the dowel bars arranged in joint region insignificantly influence the propagation of shear cracks but enhances the shear strength of the HSRC beams by approximately 25%. The one-way shear strength and shear friction strength of HSRC beams can be conservatively evaluated using the design equations specified in ACI 318-14 and EC2 shear provisions.

  • Recent test results on reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connections showed that specimens with a bolted web tended to perform poorly due to premature brittle fracture of the beam flange at the weld access hole. The measured strain data appeared to imply that a higher incidence of base metal fracture in bolted-web specimens is related to, at least in part, the increased demand on the beam flanges due to the web bolt slippage and the actual load transfer mechanism which is completely different from that usually assumed in connection design. In this paper, the practice of providing web bolts uniformly along the beam depth was brought into question. A new seismic design procedure, which is more consistent with the actual load path identified from the analytical and experimental studies, was proposed together with improved connection details.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical results on the long-term behavior of the reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams under sustained loading. In this experimental program, three beams with different conditions of aggregates replacement (natural aggregate 100%, recycled coarse aggregate 100%, recycled fine aggregate 50%) were subjected to the sustained flexural loading that was a half of the nominal flexural capacity over a period of 1 year. The beam were designed with net span of 2,000 mm and rectangular cross-section of 170 mm width and 170 mm effective depth. The beams were instrumented and monitored to observe the change in the long-term behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained loading. The predictions of long-term deflection by ACI code, Branson, Mayer, Neville, EMM and AEMM were compared with the experimental results. From the experimental results, the reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates showed the same performance as that of a beam with natural aggregate. The proposed method to predict the long-term deflections of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams gives a good estimation for experimental results.

  • This study aims at developing a new seismic resistant method by using precast concrete wall panels for existing low-rise, reinforced concrete beam-column buildings such as school buildings. Three quasi-static hysteresis loading tests were performed on one unreinforced beam-column specimen and two reinforced specimens with U-type precast wall panels. Seismic resistant test of anchored and welded steel plate connections manifested an average of 2.8 times increase in the maximum loading (average 591.8 kN) in comparison to unreinforced beam-column specimen. The maximum drift ratios were also shown between 1.4% and 2.7%. An analytical study was performed while assuming the RC column on the right side and the vertical element of the reinforced PC panel to behave in completely composite manner and the RC column on the left side and PC panel to behave in completely non-composite manner when loading was exerted from upper right end of RC frame of specimen to its left side. It was found with the assumptions that the overall flexural behavior in principle agreed with the experimental result.

  • In this study, an experimental study was conducted to analyze the hysteresis behavior according to the steel fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction of diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams under to cyclic loading. The aspect ratio and volume fraction of the steel fibers were set as the main variables, and 4 specimens were fabricated in which the amount of transverse reinforcement of the coupling beam suggested in the domestic building structural standard was relaxed by about 53%. In the experiment, cyclic loading experiments were performed in the displacement control method in accordance with ACI 374.2R-13, and as a result of the experiment, it was found that all specimens containing steel fibers exceeded the nominal shear strength suggested by the current structural standards. As the aspect ratio of the steel fibers increased, the steel fibers prevented the buckling of the diagonal reinforcement, and the bridging effect of the steel fibers held the crack surface of the concrete. The shear strength, stiffness reduction and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens containing steel fibers were superior to those of the Vf0 specimens without steel fibers. Therefore, it is judged that the steel fiber reinforced concrete can relieve the details of the transverse reinforced.

  • This paper presents test results on reduced beam section (RBS)program addressed panel zone (PZ) strength as the key variables. PZ strength has been much debated issue for several decades. A desirable range of PZ strength has not yet been proposed despite the fact that a significant amount of RBS test data is available. Test results from this study and by others showed that panel zones could easily develop a plastic rotation of 0.01 radian without causing distress to the beam flange groove welds. At this deformation level, the amount of beam distortion (i.e., buckling) was about one half that developed in strong PZ specimens. A criterion for a balanced PZ strength that improves the plastic rotation capacity while reducing the amount of beam buckling is proposed.

  • In this study, a monotonic loading test to estimate structural capacity of 12 meter long full scale precast pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was performed with a 2,000 kN dynamic actuator. A couple of embedded steel plate was installed at the ends of the beam and specimens were connected to steel girder frame with high tension bolts. Nominal compressive strength of pre-stressed concrete beam and slab were 50 MPa and 24 MPa respectively. Two HD25 tensile steel reinforcements were welded on vertical plate of embedded steel plate. Pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was loaded by displacement control method with a certain loading pattern which was repeated loading and unloading with 10mm increment displacement. About 88.34%, 86.97% and 66.83% of displacement restoration ratios were evaluated at elastic, inelastic and plastic behavior region of specimen respectively.

  • Fibers play a role to increase the tensile strength and cracking resistance of concrete structures. The post cracking behavior must be clarified to predict cracking resistance of fiber reinforced concrete. The purpose of this study is to develop a realistic analysis method for the post cracking behavior of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete members. For this purpose, the cracked section is assumed to behave as a rigid body and the pullout behavior of single fiber is employed. A probabilistic approach is used to calculate effective number of fibers across crack faces. The existing theory is compared with test data and shows good agreement. The proposed theory can be efficiently used to describe the load-deflection behavior, moment-curvature relation, load-crack width relation of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete beams.
