  • Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. To apply SHCC to structural member, SHCC must have economical efficiency and workability as well as own excellent tensile performance. For these purposes, four-point bending and direct tensile tests on SHCC with only hybrid synthetic fibers, total fiber volume fraction, $V_f$, is 1.5%, are carried out. The research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene (PE) fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Also, effect of hybrid type and water-cement ratio on the behavior of SHCC was evaluated in this paper.

  • The fiber bridging model is the crucial factor to predict or analyze the tensile behavior of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. This paper presents the fiber bridging constitutive law considering the distribution of fiber inclined angle and the number of fibers in engineered cementitious composites. The distribution of fiber inclined angle and the number of fibers are measured and analyzed by the image processing technique. The fiber distribution are considerably different from those obtained by assuming two- or three-dimensional random distributions for the fiber inclined angle. The simulation of the uniaxial tension behavior was performed considering the distribution of fiber inclined angle and number of fibers measured by the sectional image analysis. The simulation results exhibit multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior that correspond well with test results.

  • The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.

  • LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Conceret) was developed in Korea with demands of esthentic requirements in line with the recent developmental trend of concrete technology. The LEFC is made by inserting transparent transparent rods, and this forms a heterogeneous structure in the concrete matrix causing the LEFC substrate to crack due low adhesion between the rod and the cement. In this study, as a way to strengthen the bonding to the rod inserted in the LEFC, high strength vinylon fibers of varying mixture ratios were applied and physical properties were tested accordingly. To study the effect of different spacing of the bars on the LEFC, physical property testing was conducted on respective specimens with two different diameters (5mm, 10mm) inserted in different intervals of spacing (10mm, 15mm, and 20mm).

  • The seismic reinforcement ratio of SOC facilities, such as domestic roads and railroads, is 96%. Out of approximately 7 million buildings as of 2016, only 0.51 million buildings with seismic performance were secured. Although the proportion of masonry structures is 38.8% of the total buildings, there is almost no seismic resistance, only 2.0%. To solve the problem in Korea, government-level seismic measures are being promoted, but the situation is insufficient. Overseas, the UBC research team in Vancouver, Canada, has developed and used EDCC to reinforce the seismic performance of masonry buildings. EDCC is a construction material that can secure concrete ductility capability by mixing fibers and secure deformation resistance of concrete through bridging action. It is necessary to examine various materials because EDCC is not used as a spray type of secure seismic reinforcement. In this study, as part of the research and development of spraying materials to improve the durability of masonry buildings, this study examined the spraying characteristics of fiber-reinforced mortar according to fiber use and the viscosity change according to the use of thickener. As a result, the working performance of the fiber-reinforced mortar for seismic reinforcement was improved when using 1% fiber and 1% thickener.

  • To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams(4 NU-beams without U-shaped band and 4 U-beams with U-shaped band) are tested. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets and the existence of U-shaped band, etc. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without U-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. The experimental results are compared with the analytical results of nonlinear flexural behaviors for strengthened RC beam. The proposed analytical method for strengthened beams is proved to be accurate by an experimental investigation of load-deflection curve, yield load, maximum load, and flexural rigidities in the pre- and post-yielding stages.

  • In this study, carbon fiber reinforced cement composites(CFRCs) reinforced with short noncircular type carbon fibers were fabricated and properties(drying shrinkage, resistance to freezing and thawing, and fracture toughness) were compared with those of the CFRCs reinforced with circular type carbon fibers. It was found that these properties greatly depended on the shape and length of carbon fibers. The drying shrinkage of CFRCs reinforced with C-type carbon fiber was superior to other CFRCs. This effect was increased with a high aspect ratio of fiber. The resistance to freezing and thawing was increased with the fiber length and fiber volume percent, but there was on remarkable effect to fiber shape. Fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation of CFRCs reinforced with C-CFs were improved compared with other CFRCs. It was believed that the more absorption of fracture energy into the larger interface caused an increase in fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation.

  • In current design codes, minimum shear reinforcement is required for reinforced concrete flexural members, and the use of steel fiber reinforced concrete is permitted to replace the minimum shear reinforcements. In the present study, to estimate the effects of shear reinforcements and fibers on shear strength, simply supported beams were tested under transverse loading. The test results showed that the shear strength was significantly increased by the use of fibers. Particularly, the effect of fiber reinforced concrete was pronounced when high-strength concrete was used. The performance of fiber reinforced concrete for minimum shear reinforcement was evaluated using results of the present study and existing tests.
