  • This study evaluates the mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced porous concrete for pavement according to content of slag aggregate and fly ash to elicit the presentation of data and the way to enhance its function for the practical field application of porous concrete as a material of pavement. As a result, void ratio and permeability coefficient of porous concrete for pavement increased a little as mixing rate of slag aggregates increased. Void ratio and permeability coefficient increased a lot as mixing rate of fly ash decreased. As fly ash was mixed, national regulation of permeable concrete for pavement(8% and 0.1 cm/sec) was met. Compressive strength and flexural strength decreased as mixing rate of slag aggregates increased, but they increased a lot as mixing rate of fly ash increased. Even when slag aggregates were mixed 50% with 5% fly ash mixed, national regulation of pavement concrete(18MPa and 4.5MPa) was met. In addition, compared to non-mixture, flexural strength increased about 22.8% when 0.75vol.% of steel fiber was added. Regarding sliding resistance, BPN increased as mixing rate of slag aggregates increased. But BPN decreased as fly ash was mixed. Compared to crushed stone aggregates, abrasion resistance and fleers-thaw resistance decreased as mixing rate of slag aggregates increased. When fly ash was mixed, abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance improved remarkably. Compared to non-mixture, 10% mixture of fly ash improved abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance about 5.6% and 14.3 respectively.

  • In recent years due to the development of urban and underground space, the number of ground disasters is increasing, and it is also leading to social problems. To solve the problem, a grouting method is generally used. However, the grouting method has material (grout) limitations in permeability, gelation properties and tensile resistance. Therefore, research on grout materials mixed with fibers is actively carried out to improve the problems. However, in the actual ground injection process, many difficulties have been faced causing the blockage of the inlet port and the injection tube. In this study, 'CNT-mixed grout material' was developed using CNT powder that can reinforce the tensile strength of soils. The uniaxial compressive and tensile strength tests were performed to obtain the optimal content and mechanical properties of the CNT Powder-mixed grout. It was found that the optimal CNT powder content is 0.5% that gives the average maximum strength. A one-dimensional injection test and the bulb formation test were carried out, and it was identified that the injection rate and bulb form could be controlled by pressure and mixing ratio. Field application of the CNT-Mixed grout is simulated using numerical analysis of slopes, foundations, and tunnels reinforced in several types. The positive effect of reducing plastic ranges and settlements was confirmed.

  • This study investigated the effects of nanoparticles on the fracture toughness of cement mortar. Three-point bending tests, compressive tests, and slump tests were conducted on cement mortars reinforced with carbon nanotubes(CNTs), nanosilica(NS), and nano calcium carbonate(NC), respectively. Cement mortar with a water-to-cement ratio and a sand-to-cement ratio of 0.45 and 1.5, respectively, and reinforced with 0 and 2 vol.% of 19.5 mm steel fibers, respectively, was used. Reinforcement with nanoparticles partially improved the fracture toughness and compressive strength of the cement mortar. However, in the case of cement mortar reinforced with steel fibers, the reinforcement with nanoparticles was found to reduce the flowability of the mortar, adversely affecting the dispersion of steel fibers, and ultimately leading to a decrease in fracture toughness, contrary to the intended enhancement. Additional research is needed to improve the decrease in mortar fluidity caused by the reinforcement with nanoparticles.

  • In generally, ground surface strengthening such as using geotextile is needed to secure trafficability of construction equipment. Several calculation methods for bearing capacity for very soft ground improved by geotextile have been proposed already but they are not established yet. In this paper, elastoplastic finite element analysis is carried out to estimate bearing capacity improvement for very soft ground reinforced by geotextile. In conclusion, by reinforcing with geotextile the bearing capacity improvement of very soft ground is increased with the increase of the settlement after yielding. And it is enough that the length of geotextile is about 3~4 times of the loaded width for the effect to the bearing capacity improvement. Finally, the biggest tensile force of geotextile occurs at an edge of the uniform load.

  • Since reinforced soil walls were introduced in domestic civil engineering society in early 1980's, various reinforcing materials including metal strips, bar mats, and sheet-type reinforcement using geotextile, geogrid, and etc. have been developed for construction purpose. Especially, the geogrid has been mostly used as a reinforcement for reinforced earth structures. This paper describes the tensile behaviors of four types of domestic geogrids. Also, a series of the wide-width tensile tests on three types of geogrids were conducted to assess the reliability of the tensile strains in geogrid measured by strain gauge. The tensile strain by strain gauge is larger than real strain of the geogrid and a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain non-linearly increase with increasing the tensile strain. However, when the tensile strain is smaller than 3%, a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain is negligible.

  • A technology using continuous fiber soil reinforcement system for the creation of ecological restoration in a damaged area has been developed and introduced. The continuous fiber soil reinforcement system (Geofiber system) is an environmentally friendly slope protection technique that continuous fiber soil reinforced layers are constructed with green plantation on cut slope. The characteristics of this system in terms of the strength and hydraulic performance, and the vegetation were investigated in this study. The main objectives of this comparative study was to quantify the potential contribution of geofiber system for the revegetation on the cut slope in a damaged area. A Geofiber system was constructed to reinforce the lower layer of slopes and revegetation methods including wood chips were carried out on the upper layer by machineries. The results of monitoring during 3 years on cut slopes were as follows : 1) All the quadrat existed in the proper range for vegetation. 2) Species richness was 4.4 (site-1) and 18.5 (site-2) respectively. 3) The averaged coverage rates of quadrats was 90%. It is remarkable that the continuous fiber soil reinforcement system would be capable of applying to a damaged area and also would serve maintaining a healthier environment for floras. However, it behooves to continue monitoring on succession of vegetation for ecological restoration.

  • Hysteretic steel damper has been applied mainly to steel buildings. However, the usage in RC buildings is rapidly increasing recently. In order to apply the steel hysteretic damper in RC buildings, supporting elements of the damper should have sufficient strength and stiffness suitable for transferring damper forces to beams and walls. But due to the inevitable damage in reinforced concrete elements due to cracking, identification of the load transfer mechanism from damper to supporting element and hysteretic characteristics of the supporting element are extremely important in evaluating the damper behavior. Experiments were carried out on connection details between RC walls and supporting elements of the steel plate typed damper such as EaSy damper. The test results showed that fracture patterns of all specimens were almost identical except in the crack number and pattern associated with shear loading condition. Among the specimens, HD-3 shoed a well distributed cracks patterns along with good performance with respect to energy dissipation capacity, stiffness deterioration, and strength degradation.

  • Shear wall systems behave as individual wall because of openings like window and elevator cage. When coupling beams are installed in shear walls, they will have high strength and stiffness so that be less damaged by lateral loads like earthquake. However, coupling beam is difficult construction method. And arranging reinforcement of slender coupling beams are especially hard. It is because the details of coupling beam provided by ACI 318 are complex. In this paper, experiments were conducted using coupling beams with 3.5 aspect ratio to improve the details of slender coupling beams provided by ACI 318. Two specimens were proposed for this study. One specimen applied with bundled diagonally reinforcement only. Another specimen applied both bundled diagonally reinforcement and High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) so that coupling beams have half of transverse reinforcement. All specimen were compared with a coupling beam designed according to ACI 318 and were evaluated with hysteretic behaviors. Test results showed that the performance of two specimen suggested in this study were similar to that of coupling beam designed according to current criteria. And it was considered that simplification of the details of reinforcement would be available if transverse reinforcement was reduced by using bundled diagonally reinforcement and HPFRCC.

  • The important properties of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) redispersible polymer was waterproof, densification of internal pore space of concrete and ball bearing and micro filler. Also, the significant role of polypropylene(PP) fiber was crack control and blockade of movement for deterioration factors. The most studies for EVA were limited in the field of mortar and PP fiber reinforced concrete had been studied in the state of being restricted unit water content, rich mix and mixing much of the fiber without considering construction site. Therefore, the control mix design were applied in ready mixed concrete using 10 % fly ash of total cement weight used in batch plant. On the basis of control mix design, EVA contents ranging from 0 % to 10 % of total cement weight and PP fiber contents ranging from 0 % to 0.5 % of EVA concrete volume were used in the mix designs. The results showed the maximum compressive strength value was measured at EVA 5.0 % and PP fiber 0.1 %, the minimum water absorption ratio was at EVA 10 % and PP fiber 0 %, the durability factor for freezing and thawing resistance was at EVA 5.0 % and PP fiber 0.3 % and the minimum weight reduction ratio of resistance to sulfuric acid attack was at EVA 10 % and PP fiber 0.5 % after curing age 42days. Meanwhile, From these results, PP fiber reinforced EVA concrete would be very benefit, if each optimal mix types were used in hydraulic structures, underground utilities and agricultural structures.
