Trichoderma disease of oyster mushroom has not been effectively detected in the field for testing its resistance against the disease with its varieties. In this study, we investigated the methods to detect its resistance in the laboratory by using media, which enables us to understand the relevant characteristics (e.g., lysis, toxin enzyme, mycelial growth rate). In coculturing with strains of Trichoderma and oyster mushroom, it is possible to observe the difference in the resistance of oyster mushroom against Trichoderma with the phenomena of barrage reaction, overgrowth and lysis. We also observed the inhibition of mycelial growth of oyster mushroom using the dilution method with 48-well plate, but could not observed the inhibition of mycelial growth using the filter paper method of cultural supernatant. In simultaneously culturing both Trichoderma and oyster mushroom, it was possible to detect the inhibition of the mycelial growth of oyster mushroom, but Trichoderma mycelium did not overgrow against oyster mushroom. We found that the pathogenicity was efficient in using solid medium with the phenomena of overgrowth and lysis by inoculating Trichoderma on top of mycelia of oyster mushroom. In conclusion, the methods (e.g., coculture method, dilution method with 48-well plate, post-inoculation method) are recommended to detect the resistance of oyster mushroom against Trichoderma disease.
"Wonkyo Na-heukseong 2" was selected from a cross between "Kiyomaro", late season European cultivar with highly resistance and "Mansoo", late season Asian cultivar with long storability, large size and low susceptibility to pear scab made in 1997 at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science of Rural Development Administration in Korea. "Kiyomaro", released cross between "Taiheiyo" and "Bartlett" with scab resistance caused by Venturia nashicola in Japan, with no visual symptoms on any leaves was used as scab resistant source after field investigation and artificial inoculation test during 1997~1999. "Wonkyo Na-heukseong 2" blooms 1 day earlier than "Mansoo" and 3 days later than "Kiyomaro" in 2008. It is strong in tree vigor and upright-spreading in tree habit. It is classified as highly resistant to pear scab as "Kiyomaro" and "Bartlett", and cross-compatible with parental variety and Korean major pear varieties such as "Niitaka" and "Wonwhang". The average optimum harvest time of "Wonkyo Na-heukseong 2" was approximately 180 days after full bloom and it matured about 20 days shorter than parental varieties. The fruit is spindle in shape and yellowish greenish brown in skin color. Average fruit weight was 484 g and soluble solids content was $13.2^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh had medium to high juice and negligible grit. Its fruit was crisp like Asian pear.

In March of 2004, gray snow mold (Typhula blight) caused by Typhula spp. occurred on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poo pratensis L.) at MuJu golf courses in Jeonbuk Province. Leaves in the affected areas were matted together and frequently covered with white to grayish mycelia. Sclerotia were formed on the leaf blade, leaf sheath, or crown regions. The fungus isolated from the diseased leaf formed whitish mycelium, clamp connections, and light pink to brown, irregular-shaped small sclerotia of less than 1.4 mm in diameter, which are characteristic to Typhula incarnata. Optimum temperature ranges for mycelial growth were $5^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The causal organism was confirmed to be T. incarnata as the partial sequence of its ribosomal RNA ITS1 (internal transcribed spacer) region was 91% homologous to those of T. incarnata in GenBank database. Out of the 14 fungicides tested fur antifungal activity in vitro, 10 fungicides including iprodione, tebuconazole, polyoxin D, flutolanil, hexaconazole, tolclofos-methyl, fosetyl-Al, mepronil, pencycuron+tebuconazole, and fenarimol completely inhibited fungal growth at their recommended concentrations. In the field test, these fungicides and others such as thifluzamide and thiram effectively controlled the gray snow mold of turfgrass with some variable degrees of control efficacies.
'Cham', a new cultivar of Agrocybe aegerita, was bred by crossing between monokaryotic strains isolated from GMAG45021 and 'Beodeulsongi1ho' in Mushroom Research Station, Gyonggi Province A.R.E.S. in 2007. The optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of 'Cham' was 26 to $28^{\circ}C$ on PDA medium, whereas that of 'Beodeulsongi1ho'(control) was 24 to $26^{\circ}C$. The optimum temperature for the primordial formation and fruiting body development of 'Cham', as well as 'Beodeulsongi1ho', was 18 to $20^{\circ}C$. In the bottle cultivation, the spawn run period of 'Cham' at 22 to $23^{\circ}C$ was around 38 days and the period from scratching of inoculum to harvest was 12 days. These characteristics of 'Cham' were not different from those of 'Beodeulsongi1ho'. However, 'Cham' had more dark brown-colored, and thicker and stronger pileus, and longer and thicker stipe compared to that of 'Beodeulsongilho'. Freshness of 'Cham' was maintained for 10 days at the storage temperature of $4^{\circ}C$, while that of 'Beodeulsongi1ho' was maintained for 8 days. Moreover, the yield of fruiting bodies of 'Cham' was $141g/850m{\ell}$ bottle, which was similar to that of 'Beodeulsongi1ho'. Both 'Cham' and 'Beodeulsongilho' have lower resistivity against Trichoderma virens and Trichoderma harzianum.

An effective bioformulation of mixtures of chitin-degrading bacteria has been used successfully to control plant diseases and nematodes. In this study, the bioformulation approach was assessed to control damping-off disease of ginseng. In pot experiments with soils infested with dapming-off pathogens of ginseng, root-drenchings of Chrobacterium sp. C-61, Lysobacterium enzymogenes C-3, and mixture of two bacterial strains grown in chitin minimal medium were signficantly increased emergence of seeds and reduced damping-off disease incidence of seedlings. Efficacy of the bioformulated product depended on the dose and timing of application. In two-year-old ginseng field, the high control efficacies were achieved by soil drenching of two times with an undiluted product or three times with a 10-fold diluted product. In a To-jik nursery (self soil nursery), biocontrol efficacy of the undiluted product against damping-off disease were similar to that of a seed dressing with fungicide, Tolclofos-methyl WP. These results suggest that the bioformulated product containing Chromobacterium sp. C-61 and L. enzymogenes C-3 could be an effective approach to control of ginseng damping-off disease.

Fusarium infection rate of the paddy rice grain after harvest seemed to be influenced by the average temperature from late July (before heading) to the end of September (during ripening). In case of 2010 and 2013 in which average temperature of the same period was similar, Fusarium infection was related to cumulative precipitation, cumulative precipitation days, and precipitation durations over two days. The distribution ratio of Fusarium species complex isolated from paddy rice grains after harvest was 57% in 2010 and 45% in 2013 for Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC), 35% and 50% for Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex, and 8% and 5% for Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC). The distribution ratios of FGSC and FFSC were higher in 2010 than 2013. Among the total 26 promoted rice varieties, the 'Mihyang' showed resistant response against the natural infection with Fusarium species belonging to FGSC and the varieties of 'Nampyeong', 'Hi-ami'and 'Younghojinmi' showed resistant response against the natural infection with overall Fusarium pathogens. Majority of the promoted rice varieties could not be classified for resistance or susceptibility. These results are valuable as basic data to determine the resistance and susceptibility of rice variety against Fusarium spp. infection in the field.
Hyowon6, a mid-late maturing, good eating quality rice variety with multi-resistance, was developed by the rice breeding team of Pusan National University in 2013. This variety was derived from a cross between Hwayeong (as a multi-resistant parent) and Koshihikari (as a good eating quality parent). Selection by the pedigree breeding method was carried out until the $F_8$ generation. A promising line, JS14-12-36-8-5-3-1-1-1, was developed and designated as HY103 in 2013. This variety headed on August 22, which was 11 days later than that of Hwayeong. The culm length and panicle length of Hyowon6 was 85.7 cm and 21.1 cm, respectively. The number of panicles per hill was 14.5 and the number of grains per panicle was 101.7. The ratio of ripened grain was approximately 92% and the 1,000-grain weight was approximately 21.36 g for brown rice, which were similar to those of Hwayeong. Hyowon6 was moderately resistant to lodging and also to neck blast, leaf blight, and stripe virus. The glossiness value of Hyowon6 was 83, which was considerably higher than that of Hwayeong.

Typical bacterial symptoms, water-soaking brown and black leaf spots with yellow halo, were observed on watermelon seedlings in nursery and field of Gyeongnam and Jeonnam provinces. Bacterial isolates from the lesion showed strong pathogenicity on watermelon and zucchini. One of them was rod-shaped with 4 polar flagella by observation of transmission electron microscopy. They belonged to LOPAT group 1. The phylogenical trees with nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA and multi-locus sequencing typing with the 4 house-keeping genes (gapA, gltA, gyrB, and rpoD) of the isolates showed they were highly homologous to Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae and grouped together with them, indicating that they were appeared as P. syringae genomospecies group 1. Morphological, physiological, and genetical characteristics of the isolates suggested they are P. syringae pv. syringae. We believe this is the first report that P. syringae pv. syringae caused leaf spot disease on watermelon in the Republic of Korea.
This study was aimed to understand conidial disperse of the pepper anthracnose fungus Colletotrichum acutatum, elapse time for the disease development, and inoculum potentials on infected fruits. Most (99.2%) conidia of the fungus disseminated from inoculum source on the rainy day, while only 0.8% conidia dispersed on the sunny day. Among the conidia 93.3% were caught under 60 cm height at 30 cm distance; however, conidia were detected at 120 cm height at the distance. Relatively susceptible pepper fruits to anthracnose showed first visible symptoms at 4 days after infection under a mimic field condition. However, it seemed that over 10 days are required for the disease to develop on moderately resistant pepper fruits under unfavorable conditions. The number of conidia formed on a lesion was positively correlated with the lesion size ($R^{2}=0.88$). Over 10 millions of conidia were formed at a normal lesion size 1.5 cm in length. In some large coalesced lesions ca. 4cm in length produced over 100 millions of the fungal conidia. Results further confirmed that the rainfall is the key factor for the inoculum disperse of the pepper anthracnose pathogen, Colletotrichum acutatum, and a long distance dissemination is plausible according to rain and wind intensity. Consequently, rain-proof structures are ideal to avoid the disease, and removal of infected fruits and timely chemical spray are indispensible to reduce the inoculum potential in the field.

1975
During 1973 a field experiment was carried out to evaluate effectiveness of the root zone application of insecticides in medical gelatin capsules for control of several rice insect pests and dwarf virus disease. At three days after transplanting the capsules were pushed by hand about 2.5cm into the soil, near roots of Tongil rice plants. At the given day intervals number of leaf-and plant-hoppers on the hills were recorded by direct count, and dead hearts and white heads by stem borers and dwarf virus infected hills were observed in the experiment plots. Finally grain yields were measured. The percentages of dead hearts and white heads in all the plots were too low for evaluating the effectiveness of insecticides against the striped rice borers. Carbofuran of the insecticides tested was relatively effective against green rice leafhopper (Nephotettixcincticeps) and small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus), although small number of insects on the hills were recorded. Relatively small number of white-backed planthopper (Sogatella furcifera) was occured in the BPMC and Diazinon treated plots. BPMC and Carbofuran were highly effective against the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) to 80 days after treatment. Incidence of dwarf virus disease was least in the plots of Carbofuran treatment. The highest grain yield was recorded in the plots treated with Carbofuran, and it seemed to be related with good protection from the dwarf virus disease and leaf-and plant-hoppers.
