  • Effects of air-tighteness of packing material and aluminum phosphide fumigation on mortality of rice weevil were studied during rice storage. Air-tight storage of rice in sealed bag of 0.1mm PE film or sealed glass bottle reduced the deterioration of rice quality and killed all rice weevils after 60 days storage, while paper bag, PP bag and straw bag storage kept them alive. One tablet of aluminum phosphide in one cubic meter heap of rice packed in PP bag was sufficient to kill all rice weevil in it, when the heap was covered by 0.15 mm PE film during fumigation.

  • Using geo-statistical method, yield data of different fields were analyzed to examine their field variability according to examining year, analysis method. Semivariogram and Kriged maps of geo-statistical analysis were used to examine their spatial dependence within a filed. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Descriptive statistical results of the yield showed that the yield and the difference of yield ranged from 100 to 946kg/10a and from 272 to 653kg/10a, respectively within a field. The coefficient of variation also ranged from 5.9 to 22.4 %. 2) More than 90% of yield data were placed between 350 to 850kg/10a. e results indicated that the gram mass flow sensor should have the measuring range from 0.34 to 0.82kg/s considering the yields when 4 rows head-feeding combine with 0.8 m/s of working speed was utilized. 3) A high spatial dependence was found within paddy field. The Q values ranged from 0.20 to 0.97, and the range of spatial dependence was from 6.9 to 53.3m. From this result, the rational sampling interval for yield investigation was estimated 6.9m. 4) Yields within a field between observation years showed considerable variability even if the field was evenly cultivated and managed. To apply precision agriculture in a paddy field, the field test should be continued to build a solid data-base including meteorological data, blight damage and insect damage.

  • Peroxide value (POV), acid value (AV), color and flavor of soybean oil packaged with polyethylene (PE) bottle and Tetra-pack were periodically checked at $60^{\circ}C,\;40^{\circ}C$ for 33 days. POV more quickly increased when the storage temperature became higher. Kinetics of POV was followed the zero-order reaction rate. $Q_{10}$ values of those were in 1.8 in PE bottle and 2.1 in Tetra-pack at $20-40^{\circ}C$. Sensory scores were stable in PE bottle and Tetra-pack $20-40^{\circ}C$ and in Tetra-pack at $60^{\circ}C$, but those reached to the critical sensory point of 5 in PE bottle at $60^{\circ}C\;after\;30^{\circ}C$ days storage. Therefore, shelf-life of soybean oil could be predicted as 14.1 months and 7.8 months in PE bottle and 32.6 months and 22.5 months in Tetra-pack at $15^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$ by reaction rates of POV, $Q_{10}$ values and sensory scores.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of U. atrum treatment on control of Botrytis leaf blight of lily and Botrytis gray mold of cucumber, and to evaluate the U. atrum as the biological control agent of Botrytis diseases. The antagonistic isolates CNU 9037 and CNU 9054 isolated from tomato leaves were identified as Ulocladium atrum Preuss based on morphological characteristics. This is the first record of U. atrum in Korea. In bioassays on dead leaves of tomato and cucumber, treatment of U. atrum colonized the dead leaves and suppressed sporulation of Botrytis as compared with the untreated control. The suppression of spoulation of Botrytis on dead leaf segments by U. atrum was higher when U. atrum was treated before Botrytis was treated. The effect of treatments with conidial suspension of U. atrum on leaf blight of lily and gray mold of cucumber caused by Botrytis elliptica and B. cinerea, respectively, was investigated under greenhouse conditions. Spraying U. atrum ($1{\times}10^6$ conidia per ml) at intervals of 1 week for three times resulted in a significant reduction of natural infections of lily leaves caused by B. elliptica. Protective value of U. atrum treatment was higher than that of the fungicide (procymidone) treatment. Spraying U. atrum also resulted in a significant reduction of cucumber gray mold caused by B. cinerea. Our results show that U. atrum has a potential for biological control against diseases caused by Botrytis spp, in lily and cucumber.

  • This study was conducted to develop and prove the effects of an agronomical pest control measure on ginseng cultivated by direct seeding in paddy field, and the results obtained are as follows. Decomposition of ginseng in field during overwintering was due to gray mold rot caused by Botrytis cinerea, which occurred in October or November of 2016 and intensified in February and March the following year. The occurrence rate of gray mold rot based on shading materials was 6.5%, 16.8%, and 29.5% with light-proof paper, PE shade net, and rice straw shade, respectively. The initial infection occurred in the leaves prior to wintering and secondary infection occurred in the stems after wintering. The rate of screrotium formation by gray mold in the above-ground parts of ginseng tended to increase: 26.6% on October 20, 33.7% in November 20, and 41.8% on December 20. The force needed to remove the leaves and stems from withered ginseng was 0.2, 0.94, 2.5, and 5 kg for 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4- and 5-year holds; the force required was 1 kg after wintering, making it relatively easy to remove. The disease incidence rate after the removal of leaves and stems was 2.5%, 1.2%, and 2.2% in 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old plants, respectively, and a disease high incidence rate of 8.8%, 13.0%, and 18.2%, respectively, was seen when the leaves and stems were not removed. In both transplanting and direct seeding, the miss-planted rate decreased and the germination rate increased when shading material was removed and the surface of ridge was covered with soil or vinyl.

  • Potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans Cooke is one of the major diseases in the cultivation of potatoes in Korea. Effect of chitosan preparations (SH-1 and SH-2) was evaluated on the inhibition of mycelial growth of P. infestans, and protective activity using detached potato leaf assay both in vivo and in the field test. SH-1 and SH-2 were showed protective activity of young plant with control values more than 95% potato late blight by inoculation with pathogens under growth chamber conditions. Mycelial growth was inhibited the radial growth over 74% at a concentration of $300{\mu}g/ml$ of both SH-1 and SH-2. Spraying with SH-1 and SH-2 on the leaves for detached leaf assay reduced disease development. The content of total polyphenol in stem was significantly increased by SH-1 and SH-2 application in the field. In field experiments, foliar application with both SH-1 and SH-2 were significantly reduced the development of late blight on potato plants. Control of late blight disease was obtained with control values of 72% and 53% by application of 1% SH-1 and SH-2, respectively, with 4 times at 7 days interval, and reduced with similar disease control values by application with 3 times at 14 days interval compared with untreated control. SH-1 and SH-2 applications increased the fresh weight of potato, and higher grade potatoes were also increased. The results showed that SH-1 and SH-2 applications can be used as eco-friendly natural fungicide for organic farming for the increase of yields and control of late blight.

  • to investigate occurrence of kiwifruit bacterial canker disease,172 kiwifmit orchards in Jeonnam and Gyeong-nam provinces were surveyed from March to April in 1999. In the south coast region of Korea, such as Haenam, Wando, Jindo, Jangheung, and Bosuns, red-rusty brown bacterial oozes were observed in 17 kiwifvuit orchards. Disease incidences varied from 2.2% to 100% depending on various regions. Total 22.8 ha of kiwifruit orchards were destroyed by occurrence backerial canker at 1999 in Korea. Orchard in Wando, Jindo, and Goheng were severely damaged in 1999. The seasonal variation of bacterial canker incidence was also investigated from 1996 to 1997 on leaves, vines and twigs of kiwifruit. Red-rusty brown bacterial ooze was exuded from mid February or early March to late April in creaked site of vine and twig. The seasonal incidence of bacterial canker on leaves appeared from late April to late June, and rapidly increased during May, Optimum growth temperature of Pseudomonas sytingae pv. actinidiae was at $25^{\circ}C$ on King's B medium and did not grow at 33$^{\circ}C$. We suggest that spreading of bacterial canker was suppressed under the plastic flim and windbreak net house.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of soaking time of seed disinfectant, Fludioxonil on the germination and disease occurrence of adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. ma-yuen Stapf). The germination rate was higher in the seed disinfectant treatment for 3 days followed by seed soaking for 3 days than that of other treatments under controlled condition of low temperature. The value of two experiments were 90.8%, 96.7%, repectively. And, the time of seed soaking was longer, the more seed rot was proportionly decreased. In the pot and field experiment, germination rates were somewhat low compared to that of petri dish experiment as 88.3%, 84.3%, and occurence of seedling blight showed similar results that of petri dish experiments. There was not significantly different in the yield components among treatments in the field. However, as compared with untreated plot (194kg/10a), unhulled grain yield was increased about 26% on that treatment. Based on these results, it has been thought that improvement of the germonation rate and decrease of disease occurrence of adlay were accompanied with the seed disinfectant during 3 days followed by seed soaking during 3 days before sowing.
