Experience in Microbiology Course of Nursing Students: Qualitative Content Analysis (간호대학생의 병원미생물학 수강 경험: 질적 내용분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' experience in microbiology courses. Methods: Data were gathered through 4 focus group interviews and 1 in-depth personal interview, by 19 nursing students who attended microbiology courses. Data were collected June 15-July 20, 2018. Conventional content analysis was used for data analysis. Results: The result of this study revealed 4 categories: "facing the challenge", "types of learning", "lack of learning motivation", "acquiring knowledge of infection". Conclusion: Findings suggest that it is important to identify nursing students' perspectives, to improve microbiology curriculum in the educational process. Also, it is necessary to connect continuously, between educational and practical environments, for effective management of microbiology courses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the curriculum on biological nursing: structure and function of the human body, clinical microbiology, pathophysiology, and function and effect of drugs. Methods: Data was collected by searching and reviewing internet websites of 102 nursing schools or universities which provide 4 years nursing education in the Republic of Korea. The 74 curriculum on biological nursing science were available and analyzed by title, credits, hours, types of major (core or selective), offering semester, and laboratory practice. Results: The titles of 4 courses were diverse and were offered as core major (core requisites) or selective major. Structure and function of human body was offered in priority with more credits. Laboratory practice was poorly established in most courses. Biological nursing science courses were mostly taught in the second semester of the first year and the first or second semester of second year nursing education courses. Conclusion: There is a need to standardize the curriculum on biological nursing science and to expand the use of titles proposed by academic society. Also further research is necessary to identify curriculum details and to reflect the needs of professors.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop syllabuses of basic nursing science subjects (Structure and Function of Human Body, Pathogenic Microbiology, Pathophysiology, and Mechanisms and Effects of Drug) based on learning outcomes. Methods: We developed a 3-phase plan to develop the syllabuses. In the first phase, The Korean Society of Biological Nursing Science (KSBNS) held a workshop in May, 2013 in which professors who are in charge of basic nursing science subjects shared opinions about learning outcomes. As a result, initial prototype syllabuses came out. In the second phase, revised syllabuses based on learning outcomes were presented and discussed in the conference held by KSBNS in November, 2013. In the last phase, a research team who taught basic nursing science subjects finalized the syllabuses during the meetings. Results: Syllabuses of 4 basic nursing science subjects were developed. Conclusion: These syllabuses of 4 subjects need to be disseminated throughout nursing colleges. Further revision needs to be made according to the circumstances and context of each school.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop standard syllabuses of 4 subjects (Structure and Function of Human Body, Pathogenic Microbiology, Pathophysiology, Mechanisms and Effects of Drug) of bionursing. Methods: We developed standard syllabuses of 4 subjects through 3 step discussions and analysis. At first each committee for 4 subjects made the syllabus, after then all researchers discussed together. Finally each committee concluded final one. Committee members consisted of professors who teach that subject at nursing college. Results: Standard syllabus for Biological Nursing I-1 or Structure & Function of Human Body I consisted of 3 parts and 9 themes and for Biological Nursing I-2 or Structure & Function of Human Body II was 3 parts and 9 themes. Standard syllabus for Biological Nursing II or Pathogenic Microbiology consisted of 8 themes and Biological Nursing III or Pathophysiology consisted of 2 parts and 19 themes. Standard syllabus for Biological Nursing IV or Mechanisms & Effects of Drug consisted of 2 parts and 13 themes. Conclusion: The standard syllabuses and titles of 4 subjects of bionursing need to be disseminated to all the nursing college by Academy of Korean Biological Nursing Science. Further researches to investigate curriculum for bionursing and to identify the effects of 4 standard syllabuses were recommended.

Application of Predictive Food Microbiology Model in HACCP System of Milk (우유의 HACCP 시스템에서 Predictive Food Microbiology Model 이용)

  • Predictive food microbiology(PFM) is an emerging area of food microbiology since the later 1980’s. It does apply mathematical models to predict the responses of microorganism to specified environmental variables. Although, at present, PFM models do not completely developed, models can provide very useful information for microbiological responses in HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system and Risk Assessment. This study illustrates the possible use of PFM models(PMP: Pathogen Modeling Program win5.1) with milk in several elements in the HACCP system, such as conduction of hazard analysis and determination of CCP(Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage fixed factors were pH 6.7, Aw 0.993 and NaCl 1.3%. PMPwin5.1 calculated generation time, lag phase duration, time to level of infective dose for pathogens across a range of storage (Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). Proposals on Basic Data Based on Comparison of Changes in Clinical Laboratory Technologists' National Examination and Job Definition: Focused on Korea, Japan, and Taiwan (임상병리사국가시험 및 직무의 변천 비교를 중심으로 한 기초자료 제안: 한국, 일본, 대만을 중심으로)

  • This study examined the transition process of clinical laboratory technologists' national examination and job definition in Korea and compared the differences in the national examination between Korea and neighboring countries, such as Japan and Taiwan. In Korea, the number of questions made for it was 200 (1965), 200 (1977), 300 (1982), 250 (1992), 330 (2006), and 280 (2015). The practice of clinical physiology is important for real-time monitoring, given the characteristics of physiological testing. On the other hand, there are conflicts between other occupations in the working area. Clinical molecular biology needs to be established as a new major subject considering the diagnostic importance of molecular biological tests and the speed of science and technology development. Clinical laboratory operations provide policy and guidance recommendations to technologist staff. The proposed clinical laboratory technologists' national examination comprises major subjects: clinical biochemistry, clinical hematology, clinical transfusionology, clinical immunology, clinical microbiology, clinical molecular biology, clinical histology, clinical cytology, clinical physiology, and clinical laboratory operations. In addition, this study proposes the job definition of clinical laboratory technologists, revising various chemical or physiological testing to biomedical or physiological testing required for medical practice.

Update on the Taxonomy of Clinically Important Anaerobic Bacteria (임상적으로 중요한 무산소성 세균의 분류 업데이트)

  • The taxonomy of bacteria in the field of clinical microbiology is in a state of constant flux. A large-scale revamping of the classification and nomenclature of anaerobic bacteria has taken place over the past few decades, mainly due to advances in molecular techniques such as 16S rRNA and whole genome sequencing (WGS). New genera and species have been added, and existing genera and species have been reclassified or renamed. A major role of the clinical microbiological laboratories (CMLs) is the accurate identification (ID) and appropriate antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for clinically important bacteria, and rapid reporting and communication of the same to the clinician. Taxonomic changes in anaerobic bacteria could potentially affect the choice of appropriate antimicrobial agents and the antimicrobial breakpoints to use. Furthermore, current taxonomy is important to prevent treatment failures of emerging pathogenic anaerobes with antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, CMLs should periodically update themselves on the changes in the taxonomy of anaerobic bacteria and suitably inform clinicians of these changes for optimum patient care. This article presents an update on the taxonomy of clinically important anaerobic bacteria, together with the previous names or synonyms. This taxonomy update can help guide antimicrobial therapy for anaerobic bacterial infections and prevent treatment failure and can be a useful tool for both CMLs and clinicians.

3D Histology Using the Synchrotron Radiation Propagation Phase Contrast Cryo-microCT (방사광 전파위상대조 동결미세단층촬영법을 활용한 3차원 조직학)

  • 3D histology is a imaging system for the 3D structural information of cells or tissues. The synchrotron radiation propagation phase contrast micro-CT has been used in 3D imaging methods. However, the simple phase contrast micro-CT did not give sufficient micro-structural information when the specimen contains soft elements, as is the case with many biomedical tissue samples. The purpose of this study is to develop a new technique to enhance the phase contrast effect for soft tissue imaging. Experiments were performed at the imaging beam lines of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). The biomedical tissue samples under frozen state was mounted on a computer-controlled precision stage and rotated in $0.18^{\circ}$ increments through $180^{\circ}$. An X-ray shadow of a specimen was converted into a visual image on the surface of a CdWO4 scintillator that was magnified using a microscopic objective lens(X5 or X20) before being captured with a digital CCD camera. 3-dimensional volume images of the specimen were obtained by applying a filtered back-projection algorithm to the projection images using a software package OCTOPUS. Surface reconstruction and volume segmentation and rendering were performed were performed using Amira software. In this study, We found that synchrotron phase contrast imaging of frozen tissue samples has higher contrast power for soft tissue than that of non-frozen samples. In conclusion, synchrotron radiation propagation phase contrast cryo-microCT imaging offers a promising tool for non-destructive high resolution 3D histology.
