  • An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.

  • A mechanical face seal is a tribo-element intended to control leakage of working fluid at the interface between a rotating shaft and its housing. Leakage of working fluid decreases drastically as the clearance of the mating seal faces gets smaller. But the very small seal clearance results in an increased reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals a compromise between low leakage and acceptable seal life is important, and it presents a difficult and practical design problem. A fluid film or sealing dam geometry of the seal clearance affects seal lubrication performance very much, and thereby it is one of the main design considerations. In this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed, using the Galerkin finite element method, which is readily applied to various seal geometries. Film pressures of the sealing dam are analyzed, including the effects of the seal face coning and tilt. Then, lubrication performances of the seals, such as opening forces, restoring moments, leakage, and dynamic coefficients, are calculated, and they are compared to the results obtained by the narrow seal approximation.

  • These days, the interests on the high speed handling robots are increasing because it is important to get down the unit cost of production to get the price competitiveness. The parallel kinematic mechanism is more suitable to implement the high speed robot system as well known. The moving parts of the high speed parallel robot have to be designed for light weight. But the vibration motion is induced by the light weight links because they drive in high acceleration and deceleration. In this reason, the structural analysis of the high speed parallel kinematic robot is very important in the design process. In this paper, the study on the structural analysis of a high speed parallel robot has been done and the research results will be introduced.

  • This paper presents a parallel algorithm for the finite element analysis using relatively inexpensive transputer parallel system. The substructure method, which is highly parallel in nature, is used to improve the parallel computing efficiency by splitting up the whole structure into substructures. The proposed algorithm is applied to a simple two-dimensional magnetostatic problem. It is found that the more the number of transputer is increased, the more the total computation time is reduced. And the computational efficiency becomes better as the number of internal boundary nodes becomes smaller.

  • A nonlinear aeroelastic analysis system in transonic and supersonic flows has been developed using high speed parallel processing technique on the network based PC-clustered machines. This paper includes the coupling of advanced numerical techniques such as computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The unsteady Euler solver on dynamic unstructured meshes is employed and coupled with computational aeroelastic solvers. Thus it can give very accurate engineering data in the structural and aeroelastic design of flight vehicles. To show the great potential of useful application, transonic and supersonic flutter analyses have been conducted for a complete aircraft model under developing in Korea.

  • In this paper, an accuracy analysis of parallel method based on non-overlapping domain decomposition method is carried out. In this approach, proposed by Tak et al.(2013), the decomposed subdomains do not overlap each other and the connection between adjacent subdomains is determined via simple connective finite element named interfacial element. This approach has two main advantages. The first is that a direct method such as gauss elimination is available even in a singular problem because the singular stiffness matrix from floating domain can be converted to invertible matrix by assembling the interfacial element. The second is that computational time and storage can be reduced in comparison with the traditional finite element tearing and interconnect(FETI) method. The accuracy of analysis using proposed method, on the other hand, is inclined to decrease at cross points on which more than three subdomains are interconnected. Thus, in this paper, an accuracy analysis for a novel non-overlapping domain decomposition method with a variety of subdomain numbers which are interconnected at cross point is carried out. The cause of accuracy degradation is also analyze and establishment of countermeasure is discussed.

  • Computational analysis of incompressible flows by numerically solving Navier-Stokes equations using multi-block finite volume method is conducted on a parallel computing system. Numerical algorithms adopted in this study $include^{(1)}$ QUICK upwinding scheme for convective $terms,^{(2)}$ central differencing for other terms $and^{(3)}$ the second-order Euler differencing for time-marching procedure. Structured grids are used on the body-fitted coordinate with multi-block concept which uses overlaid grids on the block-interfacing boundaries. Computational code is parallelized on the MPI environment. Numerical accuracy of the computational method is verified by solving a benchmark test case of the flow inside two-dimensional rectangular cavity. Computation in the axial compressor cascade is conducted by using 4 PE's md, as results, no numerical instabilities are observed and it is expected that the present computational method can be applied to the turbomachinery flow problems without major difficulties.

  • This paper introduces a new explicit spectral element method for the simulation of SH-waves in semi-infinite domains. To simulate the wave motion in unbounded domains, it is necessary to reduce the infinite extent to a finite computational domain of interest. To prevent the wave reflection from the trunctated boundaries, perfectly matched layer(PML) wave-absorbing boundary is introduced. The forward problem for simulating SH-waves in PML-truncated domains can be formulated as second-order PDEs. The second-order semi-discrete form of the governing PDEs is constructed by using a mixed spectral elements with Legendre-gauss-Lobatto quadrature method, which results in a diagonalized mass matrix. Then the second-order semi-discrete form is transformed to a first-order, whose solutions are calculated by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Numerical examples showed that solutions of SH-wave in the two-dimensional analysis domain resulted in stable and accurate, and reflections from truncated boundaries could be reduced by using PML boundaries. Elastic wave propagation analysis using explicit time integration method may be apt for solving larger domain problems such as three-dimensional elastic wave problem more efficiently.

  • In this study 8 nodes parallel linux cluster system is constructed and tested for the evaluation of computational efficiency and reliability of the Yellow Sea tidal hydrodynamics prior to compute storm surge inundation along the west coast of the Korean Peninsular. Computational efficiency increases up to 7 times based on NPB bench-marking test. Simulated results by pADCIRC on reproduction of the Yellow Sea tidal hydrodynamics resemble well with previous studies. According to model parameter tests, bottom friction coefficient, which should be appropriately represented shallow depth along the west coast, is essential factor in simulation.
