  • In this paper the failure behavior of the reinforced earth retaining wall structures according to the deformed types of the face was studied by model test using carbon rods. In model test the behavior of the face for the model of the reinforced earth wall was divided into three cases : the displacement of the top part(case 1), the lateral displacement(case 2) and the displacement of the lower part (case 3). The photographic method was applied to examine the failure line of the deformed wall with the naked eye. The failure line shows a parabolic shape for case 1, a large circular arc for case 2 and a logarithmic spiral for case 3 in the experimental results. The design failure line for the coherent gravity structure hypothesis was most similar to the failure line for the case of the lower part displacement.

  • This study is to consider applicability of spiral bolt strain gauge as an instrument measuring behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope. When the instrument was installed on the ground, it can be useful to identify the state of ground behavior because it has the characteristics of flexibility, as well as to apply the ground reinforcement because it has higher pull-out resistance to the ground. From the measurement of behavior to soft ground foundation, the strain shows a stable state in the beginning, then was observed significant change in the upper and the middle of spiral bolt strain gauge after 400 days. This is analyzed that ground loosening, which is due to occurred frequent earthquake of magnitude 1~2 with increased rainfall, lead to the instability of the ground. From the measurement of behavior to rock slope, the strain shows a stable state with very little change in a period of 0~50 days and the biggest strain at 4.2 m (P6) in a period of 50~100 days, then other places except P6 was maintained at a stable state in a period of 100~160 days. The reason is analyzed because that blasting for excavated limestone surrounding was affected to the largest at P6. However, based on the size of strain change by behavior of the soft ground foundation and rock slope, it is considered that the present condition are not effected on stability of retaining structure and rock slope. In conclusion, the proposed spiral bolt strain gauge can be useful to measure behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope, and also to be measured behavior as well as reinforcement of the target ground.

  • The influence of stress path on the deformation characteristics of clay has been studied through a series of stress-path controlled triaxial tests on artificially sedimented and normally con- solidated Kaolinite. It has been found that there exists a critical stress increment ratio, Kc, in which stress·strain characteristics possesses a linear relationships and beyond Kc, strain hardening. A modified hyperbolic constitutive model for the strain hardening behavior has been formulated based on the Drnevich's hyperbolic function. And, a method of settlement analyses has been Proposed wherein the effect of stress path during consolidation is taken into account.

  • This paper is to study elasto-plastic behavior of shear deformed braced frames. Two types of frames are considered , X-type and K-type. The slenderness ratio has been used in the parametric study. The stress-strain curve is assumed tri-linear model, and considered the strain hardening range. The finite difference method is used to solve the load-displacement relationship of the braced frames. For the elastic slope and maximum load, experimental results are compared with theoretical results and its difference remains less than 10%. Therefore suggested method in this paper is reasonable.

  • Pocheon, Keochang and Sangju granite samples of different granularity and mineralogical composition were thermally treated at pre-determined temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. Thermally-induced microcracks were characterized using an optical microscopy and their effects on the deformation behavior of thermally cycled samples were studied performing compressive mechanical tests. Optical observations shows that by $600^{\circ}C$ nearlly all crystal boundaries open and the new intracrystalline cracks form in the more grains. The intracrystalline cracks are most pronounced at thermally treated Pocheon and Keochang granite samples. Results from mechanical tests represents negative lateral strains, which give negative Poisson's ratios. It is the most probable that negative lateral strains are produced by residual stresses induced during cooling.

  • Rock mass includes such discontinuities as fault, joint, bedding, crack, schistosity, cleavage. The rock mass behavior, therefore, is influenced by the discontinuity behavior. In this study, a stability and deformation analysis method considering discontinuities in rock mass is proposed, and then applied to the rock collapse disaster site. As the method, the stability analysis by the stereographic projection method was carried out in an actual site, the deformation analysis program by the finite element method including the joint element was developed, and performed. To demonstrate the applicability of this developed stability and deformation analysis method considering discontinuities in rock mass, the analysis results are examined and compared with the failure behavior at the rock mass.

  • Lightly overconsolidated clays are commonly anisotropic, and exibit substantial ranges of approximately linear behavior at stress levels which do not produce yielding. The theory of cross-anisotropic elasticity is adopted to predict the stress-strain behavior of such an anisotropic soil. Equivalent elastic parameters $A^*$ and $B^*$ which express the relationships of stress and strain in the theory have been proposed. It is shown that constitutive relationships derived from the theory represents well the mechanical response of anisotropic soil.

  • By applying Eshelby's theory on the'transformation' and' inhomogeneity'problems of an ellipsoidal inclusion, a microscopic stress-strain is formulated for a composite material consisting of a matrix and a large number of aligned ellipsoidal inclusions. Some of the composites of practical interest, such as unidirectionally fiber- reinforced, Particle dispersion strengthened and layered composites can be treated by changing the axial ratios of the ellipsoidal inclusion. The macroscopic stress-strain relation obtained is applicable to elastic and elasto-plastic deformation of the composite in uniform loading.

  • Recently, to prevent explosive spalling of high-strength concrete (HSC) members, the usage of nylon fiber instead of polypropylene fiber has increased. Past experimental studies have been conducted to examine the spalling and mechanical properties of HSC with nylon fibers when exposed to elevated temperature. However, the previous studies on HSC with nylon fibers subjected to high temperatures were performed only on the properties such as spalling, compressive strength, and elastic modulus rather than investigations on to the behaviors such as thermal strain, total strain, steady state creep, and transient creep. Therefore, in this study thermal strain, total strain, steady state creep, and transient creep of HSC mixed with nylon fibers with water to binder ratio of 0.30 to 0.15 were tested. The experimental results showed that nylon fibers did not affect the performance of HSC with nylon fibers at high temperatures. However, HSC with nylon fibers generated a larger transient creep strain than that of HSC without fibers and normal strength concrete.

  • The most of original horizontal bearing capacity theory of the pile is not efficiently to consider interaction between soil and pile because it is only to consider the earth pressure theory and separately the ground form pile. In recent, in order to improve the pile technology, it is necessary to confirm the real behaviour characteristics of pile under lateral load. Hence, to evaluate the behaviour characteristics of the single and group pile under lateral loads using the strain wedge model that could consider the interaction between soil and piles. Primarily, laboratory scale down model tests was carried out to predict the behaviour characteristics on real size piles using the strain wedge model. The comparative analyses between model test and numerical analysis for the evaluation of whole behaviour were conducted.
