  • Agricultural tractors must have a function of ROPS to protect drivers under roll-over accident. In this study, finite element analyses and an optimal design were performed to reduce the cost and the production period of the cabin frame of a tractor to pass the ROPS strength test. To confirm the pass of ROPS strength test of an initial design model, the results of deformation and principal strain from the analyses were evaluated. To reduce the weight of the cabin frame, design of experiment of Taguchi was implemented, and an optimal design was obtained. The weight of the optimal design model was reduced by 7% comparing with the initial design model.

  • ISO 21029 cryogenic vessel is used to transport cryogenic fluids. High-manganese steel (High-Mn steel) is widely regarded as suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures. The conventional way of manufacturing an ellipsoidal vessel head involves incremental stretching, followed by a spinning process. In this study, an alternative method for forming an ellipsoidal vessel head was proposed. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to theoretically examine the strain evolution during a multi-stage forming process, which involved progressive stretching, deep drawing, and spinning of High-Mn steel. The distribution of effective strain and strain components were analyzed at different regions of the formed part. The FEA results revealed that only normal strains were evident in the dished region of the vessel head due to the stretching process. However, the flange region experienced complex strain evolution during the subsequent deep drawing and spinning process.

  • In the case of a wire with a very fine diameter during the multi-stage drawing process, the heterogeneity of the deformation in the radial direction tends to develop strongly as the amount of deformation is accumulated. It is known that the heterogeneity of deformation in the radial direction of the wire is closely related to the process parameters during the multi-stage drawing process. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to theoretically examine the effect of friction between the surface of the wire and the drawing die during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy on the deformation heterogeneity developed in the radial direction of the wire. The distribution of effective strain, radial strain, circumferential strain, and shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process was analyzed while changing the friction coefficient, and the results were analyzed and compared for each path and position. The FEA results revealed that the shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy showed the most non-uniform distribution and was also severely affected by the friction coefficient.

  • Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane force by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structural system. With this character of the spatial structure, generally long span is used. As a result, large deflection is accompanied from the general frame. the structure is apt to result in a large deflection even though this structure experiences a small displacement in absence. Usually, nonlinear analysis in numerical analysis means geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity and complex nonlinearity analysis considers both of them. In this study, nonlinear equation of equilibrium considering geometric nonlinearity as per finite element method was applied and also considered the material nonlinearity using the relation of stress-strain in element. It is applied to find unstable result for tracing load-deflection curve in the numerical analysis tech. especially Arc-length method, and result of the analysis was studied by ABAQUS a general purpose of the finite element program. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane and space truss.

  • In this paper, using a pattern transformation triggered by deformation, we propose a porous structure that exhibits the characteristic of negative Poisson's ratio in both tension and compression. Due to the lack of torque for rotational motion of ligaments, the existing porous structure of circular holes shows positive Poisson's ratio under tension loading. Also, the porous structure of elliptic holes has a drawback of low durability due to stress concentration. Thus, we design curved ligaments to increase the rotational torque under tension and to alleviate the stress concentration such that strain energy is uniformly distributed in the whole structure. The developed structure possesses better stiffness and durability than the existing structures. It also exhibits the negative Poisson ratio in both compression and tension of 10% nominal strain. Through nonlinear finite element analysis, the performance of developed structure is compared with the existing structure of elliptic holes. The developed structure turns out to be significantly improved in terms of stiffness and durability.

  • A mixed finite element model was developed using the classical plate theory to analyze the nonlinear bending of a plate. The appropriate weight functions for the constraints integrated over the domain were determined by the Lagrange multiplier method by using the principle of minimum virtual energy; which provides the constitutive relations between force-like variables and strains. All of detail terms of element wise coefficient matrices and associate tangent matrices to be used in the Newton iterative method are presented. Then, the linear solutions of the current model and those of the traditional displacement model under the SS (simple support) boundary conditions were compared with the existing analytical solution. The post-processed images of the nonlinear results of the force-like variables are presented to show the continuity of the solutions at the joint of the element boundaries. Finally, the converged nonlinear finite element solutions of the current model are compared with those of existing traditional displacement model.

  • Metal seals are the main components that establish the containment boundary in bolted casks, which store spent nuclear fuel. These seals are degraded by heat and radiation. In addition, creep occurs when the seals are exposed to intense heat for an extended period. This creep results in the stress relaxation of the seals, which consequently impairs the seal integrity. The stress relaxation can reduce the sealing performance of the metal seal, which can further cause leakage in the storage cask. Moreover, the reduction of bolt tension leads to sealing performance degradation. In this study, the results of high-temperature-accelerated tests were obtained to evaluate the containment integrity of metal seals and the decrease in bolt tension. During the tests, the leakage rate, bolt strain, and ambient temperature of the metal seals were measured and analyzed. The metal seals were found to maintain containment integrity for 50 years of storage. The validity of the acceleration test was also investigated.

  • In the present study, crack initiation criteria, static failure and tensile mode fatigue behavior for a rail steel are evaluated to assure the railway vehicle's safety. The transverse fissure, which is the most critical damage in the rail, is initiated by the maximum shear stress and its location is subsurface. In addition, the possibility of transition from the shear mode to the mixed mode increases with increasing the length of subsurface crack. Because of the brittleness by the welding, the fracture toughness of the welded part is lower than of the base metal. For low ${\Delta}K$, the stage II fatigue crack growth rates of the welded part is slower than of the base metal but, for high ${\Delta}K$, this different behavior for fatigue crack growth rate is nearly diminished. These trends are more remarkable for low stress ratio, R=0.1. It is believed that this behavior is caused by the change of the microstructure which that of the welded part is coarser than of base metal.

  • The objective of the study is to extract information about the road surfaces to be studied by analyzing asphalt concrete-paved road surface images photographed with a digital video camera. To analyze the accuracy of road surface information gained using a digital imagery processing method, it was compared and analyzed with the outcomes of control surveying. As a result, an average error of 0.0427 m in the X-axis direction, that of 0.0527 m in the Y-axis direction, and that of 0.1539 m in the Z-axis direction were found, good enough for mapping at a scale of 1:1,000 or less and GIS data. Besides, information on road surface assessment factors such as crack ratio, the amount of rutting and profile index was gained by analyzing processed digital imagery. This information made it possible to conduct road surface assessment by generating PSI and MCI. As quality digital image information has been gathered from roads and stored, important fundamental data on PMS (Pavement Management System) will become available in the future.

  • The newly developed analysis method for nanoindentation load-displacement curves are focused on not only obtaining elastic modulus and hardness values but also other mechanical properties, such as yield strength and strain hardening properties. Dao et al. developed a forward and reverse algorithm to extract the elasto-plastic properties of materials from the load-displacement curves obtained in nanoindentation test. These algorithms were only applicable for engineering metals (Poisson#s ratio 0.3) using the equivalent conical indenter of the Berkovich. However, the applicable metals are substantially limited because range of used in the finite element analysis is narrow. This study is designed to expand range of the applicable metals in the reverse algorithms established by Dao et al. and to improve the accuracy of that for extracting the elasto-plastic properties of materials. In this study, a representative strain was assumed to vary according to specific range of $E^*/{\sigma}_r$ and was defined as function of $E^*/{\sigma}_r$. Also, an initial unloading slope in reverse algorithms improved in this study was not considered as independent parameters of the load-displacement curves. The mechanical properties of materials for finite element analysis were modeled with the elastic modulus, E, the yield strength, ${\sigma}_y$, and the strain hardening exponents, n. We showed that the representative strain (0.033) suggested by Dao et al. was no longer applicable above the $E^*/{\sigma}_r$ of 400 and depended on values of $E^*/{\sigma}_r$. From these results, we constructed the dimensionless functions, in where the initial unloading slope was not included, for engineering metals up to $E^*/{\sigma}_r$ of 1500. These functions allow us to determine the mechanical properties with greater accuracy than Dao#s study.
