Strain softening is observed for geomaterials such as rocks when they are sheared. The proper computational modelling for strain softening is very important because this behavior is closely related to failure in geotechnical problems. In this paper, we have investigated the proper FEM techniques for modelling strain softening in order to simulate failure behavior numerically. In showing numerical examples, the effects of element shape, mesh pattern and of imperfection and the difference between small and large deformation theories, of displacement control and pressure control after peak have been discussed.

This paper presents a computation of nonlinear elastic strains that may occur in the leaflet of the Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valve by the applied high blood pressure using the finite element analysis methodology. By adopting numerical analysis techniques of the commercial finite element analysis code, NISA, structural analyses of the Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valve are performed for the slight variation of leaflet thickness to get the elastic strains occurring in the leaflet while the high blood fluid pressures are applied to the leaflet surface in order that the maximum stress occurring in the leaflet may be less than the yield stress of the leaflet material(Si-Alloyed PyC). And so, only the geometric non-linearity is assumed because large geometric nonlinear elastic strains are expected rather than material nonlinear strains due to the applied high blood pressure. Computed linear and nonlinear elastic strains are compared to make sure the non-linearity of the computed elastic strain. The comparison result shows that large elastic strains occur clearly in the very thin leaflets as high blood pressures are applied. However, only the linear elastic strains occur for low blood pressures, and also for thick leaflets even for the high blood pressures. Hence the nonlinear structural analysis is very required in the structural design of a mechanical heart valve.

In this paper, a micro-mechanical failure prediction program is developed based on SIFT (Strain Invariant Failure Theory) by using the multi-scale modeling method for fiber-reinforced composite materials. And the failure analysis are performed for open-hole composite laminate specimen in order to verify the developed program. First of all, the critical strain invariants are obtained through the tensile tests for three types of specimens. Also, the matrices of strain amplification factors are determined through the finite element analysis for micro-mechanical model, RVE (Representative Volume Element). Finally, the microscopic failure analysis is performed for the open-hole composite laminate specimen model by applying a failure load obtained from tensile test, and the predicted failure indices are evaluated for verification of the developed program.
In this paper, the critical strains for pavement design were calculated from both Layered Elastic Program (LEP) and Finite Element Method (FEM) and the case studies which give similar critical responses were compared. Although FEM has been realized as a superior model, LEP is more favorable to pavement design due to its simplicity and thus, the technique to calculate the correct critical responses using LEP is significant. This study showed that KENLAYER can possibly estimate the critical responses close to ones obtained from TTIPAVE, which considers nonlinear cross-anisotropic behavior of unbound base materials, by adjusting the stress point locations.

This paper deals with the determination of mechanical properties of various galvanized steel sheets that are used for fabricating automobile bodies; the instrumented indentation technique and finite element analysis were used for the determination. First, tensile tests were conducted to obtain the true stress-true strain curves of galvanized steel sheets with various thicknesses. Load-deformation curves were then obtained by using the instrumented indentation testing machine, and they were compared with load-deformation curves obtained by finite element analysis. Further, true stress-true strain curves were obtained at the optimal observation point by finite element analysis.

Longitudinal strains (${\varepsilon}_x$) of the core and skin layers in glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) cross-ply composite laminates have been measured using the embedded optical fiber sensor of absolute extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (A-EFPI). Transmission optical microscopy was used to investigate the damage behavior around the A-EFPI sensor. Foil-type strain gauges bonded on both the upper and lower surfaces were used for the measurement of the surface strains. It was shown that values of ${\varepsilon}_x$ in the interior of the skin layer and the core layer measured by embedded A-EFPI sensor were significantly higher than that of the specimen surface measured by strain gauges. The experimental results agreed well with those from finite element analysis on the basis of uniform stress model. Large strains in the core layer led to the occurrence of many transverse cracks which drastically reduced the strain at failure of optical fiber sensor embedded in the core layer.
The problem on cyclic plate load tests was analyzed by finite element method using an anisotropic hardening constitutive model. The constitutive model was coded to user subroutine in ABAQUS. Using the result of the analysis, Young's moduli corresponding to various strain levels were evaluated by a back calculation method and were very similar to those of input. On the basis of the back calculation method plate loading tests were verified. As a result, deformation moduli could be evaluated practically from cyclic plate load tests with respect site conditions.

The behaviors of the reinforced concrete membrane elements are expected by Navier's three principles of the mechanics of materials. The adopted cyclic stress-strain curves of concrete consist of seven different unloading and loading stages in the compressive zone and six other stages in the tensile zone. The curves took into account the softening of concrete that was influenced by the tensile strain in the perpendicular direction of cracks. The stress-strain relationships for steel bar embedded in concrete subjected to reversed cyclic forces considered the tension stiffening effect and Baushinger effect. The predicted results of the analysis based on Navier's principles were in good agreement with the observed shear stress-strain relationships as well as transverse and longitudinal strains.

This paper describes the development of a precision 3-component load cell with plate beams which may be used for measuring forces Fx, Fy and moment Mz simultaneously in industry. We have derived equations to predict the bending strains on the surface of the beams under forces or moment. We have also determined the attachment location of strain gages of each sensor and fabricated 3-component load cell. To evaluate the rated strain and interference error of each sensor, we have carried out characteristic test of precision 3-component load cell. It reveals that the rated strain calculated from the derived equations are good agreement with the results from Finite Element Method analysis.
