The micromechanical approach was used to investigate the interfacial strain distributions of a unidirectional composite under transverse loading in which fibers were usually found to be randomly packed. Representative volume elements (RVE) for the analysis were composed of both regular fiber arrays such as a square array and a hexagonal array, and a random fiber array. The finite element analysis was performed to analyze the normal, tangential and shear strains at the interface. Due to the periodic characteristics of the strain distributions at the interface, the Fourier series approximation with proper coefficients was utilized to evaluate the strain distributions at the interface for the regular and random fiber arrays with respect to fiber volume fractions. From the analysis, it was found that the random arrangement of fibers had a significant influence on the strain distribution at the interface, and the strain distribution in the regular fiber arrays was one of special cases of that in the random fiber array.

An "equivalent homogeneous, orthotropic" model that includes edge effects and an accompanying finite element analysis is presented for elastomeric bearings. The model is developed for two-dimensional configurations with horizontal layers, and for linear, elastic, small deformation conditions. The equivalent homogeneous theory, in addition to capturing the overall response characteristics of the layered elastomeric bearing system, approximately models the important edge effects, which occur at and near boundaries that cut the layers, and the stress concentrations at layer interfaces. The primary dependent variables for the theory have been selected such that the highest derivatives appearing in the strain energy function are first-order, thus requiring only $C_0$ continuity of the finite element approximations. As a result, the finite element analysis is simple and computationally efficient. Numerical examples are presented to verify the theory and to illustrate potential applications of the analysis.

The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and PU fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To analyze the wave deformation due to the flexible membrane. eigen-function expansion method is employed. The fluid domain is seperated into two regions. The velocity potential in each regions and the deformation of membrane are coupled by the body boundary conditions. Herein the deformation of membrane is obtained by solving the membrane equation. As a numerical example, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of several design parameters such as tensile force. mooring line stiffness and membrane height are investigated. It is found that the efficiency of flexible membrane breakwater is significantly affected by these design parameters. The angle of incident wave is an important role to the performance of breakwater. Finally we conclude that flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future breakwaters.
In recent years, composite materials have been used in civil engineering as well as architecture, automobile, aerospace, shipping industries. Composite materials are composed of two or more different materials to produce desirable properties for structural strength. The shell structures have the advantage of more efficient load resistance due to its curved shape as compared to the plate structures. And the shell structures with composite materials have many advantages in strength, corrosion resistance, and weight reduction. The objective of this study is to analyze circular conical shells with shear deformation effects and to prove the advantage of composite materials. To solve differential equations of conical shells, this paper used finite difference method.
A piezoelectric flextentional deep-water sonar transducer has been designed using a coupled FE-HEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state frequency response for TX displacement modes, directivity patterns, resonance frequencies, TVRs. While the conventional barrel-stave typed sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material is designed, the external surface of the transducer is modified in order to allow the same hydrostatic pressure to be applied onto the inner and the outer surfaces of the transducer. With this modification for deep-water application, a new resonance mode is generated at lower frequency. This lower resonance mode can be adjusted according to the degree of the outer surface modification.

This paper reports the application study of the ground reinforcement under a buried conduit subjected to differential settlement via a finite element modeling. The soil-reinforcement inter- action helps to minimize the differential settlement between the adjoining conduit segments. Three different field conditions have been considered. The settlement pattern and deformation slope have been evaluated for each boundary condition. The analysis results are compared for both non-reinforced and reinforced case to measure the effectiveness of the soil reinforcement for restraining deformation of the conduit.
This paper reports the application study of the concrete bedding reinforcement under a buried conduit with flexible joints subjected to differential settlement via a finite elemen modeling. The reinforcement of concrete bedding helps to minimize the differential settlement between the adjoining conduit segments. Three different field conditions have been considered. The settlement pattern and deformation slope have been evaluated for each boundary condition. The analysis results are compared for both non-reinforced and reinforced cases to measure the effectiveness of concrete bedding reinforcement for restraining deformation of a conduit with flexible joints.

An analytical method based on the upper bound approach for the cup-bar axisymmetric combined extrusion is presented to determine the deformation zones as well as extrusion load and deformed geometry in the early stage. A new kiematically admissible velocity field is derived by the appropriate transformation of the original velocity field and applying the flow function approach. The derived velocity field is directly related to the boundary function for the plastically deforming zones and the parameter controlling the flow direction to the forward part or backward part. Experiments are carred out with the annealed aluminum 2024 at room temperature for the various area reductions. The workhardening effect is considered in the formulation as a function of the height ratio between the deformed billet and the orighinal billet to calculate the extrusion pressures. The theoretical predictions for the extrusion loads and deformed configuration are in good agreement with the experimental results.
