This study investigates the vibration characteristics of a wire-bonding piezoelectric transducer and ultrasonic horn for high-speed and precise welding. A ring-type piezoelectric stack actuator is excited at 136 kHz to vibrate a conical-type horn and capillary system. The nodal lines and amplification ratio of the ultrasonic horn are obtained using a theoretical analysis and FEM simulation. The vibration modes and frequencies close to the driving frequency are identified to evaluate the bonding performance of the current wire-bonder system. The FEM and experimental results show that the current wire-bonder system uses the bending mode of 136 kHz as the principal motion for bonding and that the transverse vibration of the capillary causes the bonding failure. Because the major longitudinal mode exists at 119 kHz, it is recommended that the design of the current wire-bonding system be modified to use the major longitudinal mode at the excitation frequency and to minimize the transverse vibration of capillary in order to improve the bonding performance.
In this paper, an improved four-node Reissner-Mindlin plate-bending element with enhanced assumed strain field is presented for the analysis of isotropic and laminated composite plates. To avoid the shear locking and spurious zero energy modes, the transverse shear behavior is improved by the addition of a new enhanced shear strain based on the incompatible displacement mode approach and bubble function. The "standard" enhanced strain fields (Andelfinger and Ramm, 1993) are also employed to improve the in-plane behaviors of the plate elements. The four-node quadrilateral element derived using the first-order shear deformation theory is designated as "14EASP". Several applications are investigated to assess the features and the performances of the proposed element. The results are compared with other finite element solutions and analytical solutions. Numerical examples show that the element is stable, invariant, passes the patch test, and yields good results especially in highly distorted regimes.

The paper experimentally deals with the radial in-plane vibration characteristics of disk-shaped piezoelectric transducers. The radial in-plane motion, which is induced due to Poisson's ratio in the piezoelectric disk polarized in the thickness direction, was measured by using an in-plane laser vibrometer, and the natural frequencies were measured by using an impedance analyzer. The experimental results have been compared with theoretical predictions obtained by simplified theoretical and finite-element analyses. It appears that the fundamental mode of a piezoelectric disk transducer is a radial mode and its radial displacement distribution from the center to the perimeter is not monotonic but shows maximum slightly apart from the perimeter. The theoretically-calculated fundamental frequencies agree well with the finite-element results for small thickness-to-diameter ratio, and they are accurate within 7 % error for the ratio up to 0.4.
It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values using three point bending test(TPB) proposed by RILEM committees because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initiation load in the disk test. In this paper, the fracture properties of high strength concrete disks with center-crack was investigated. For this purpose, the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). And the experimental fracture locus was compared with theoretical fracture locus. Also, the results of fracture properties for the degree of concrete strength are presented. It is concluded from this study that results from FEA with maximum stress theory were compared well with the results from experiment. And the degree of concrete strength was contributed to the crack initiation load and fracture toughness, but was not contributed to the failure angle. Also, The discrepancy of fracture locus between the maximum stress theory and the experiment for concrete is considered to depend upon a large energy requirement for inducing the mixed-mode and sliding mode fractures.
This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. In order to investigate the effect of the boundary end conditions for the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline, we have devised a computer program to find the solutions of the formulae on the dynamic responses (displacements, axial strains, and bending strains) under the various boundary end conditions considered in this study, The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. We have observed a resonance when the mode wavelength matches the wavelength of the seismic wave, where the mode number(k) of resonance f3r the axial direction. On the other hand, we have not been able to observe a resonance in the analysis of the transverse direction, because the dynamic responses are found to vanish after the seventh mode. From the results of the dynamic responses at many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement, the strain and its position.
Precast reinforced concrete bridge columns with hollow rectangular section were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial force to investigate its seismic performance. After all the precast column segments were erected, longitudinal reinforcement was inserted in the sheath prefabricated in the segments, which were then mortar grouted. Main variables of the test series were column aspect ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, amount of lateral reinforcement, and location of segment joints. The aspect ratios were 4.5 and 2.5, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.15% and 3.07%. The amount of lateral reinforcement were 95%, 55%, 50%, and 27% of the minimum amount for full ductility design requirements in the Korean Bridge Design Code. The locations of segment joints in plastic hinge region were 0.5 and 1.0 times of the section depth from the bottom column end. The test results of cracking and failure mode, axial-flexural strength, lateral load-displacement relationship, and displacement ductility are presented. Then, safety of the ductility demand based seismic design in the Korean Bridge Design Code is discussed. The column specimens showed larger ductility than expected, because buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bar was prevented due to confinement developed not only by transverse steel but also by sheath and infilling mortar.

This paper presents a continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method for crack propagation problems using a reproducing kernel method(RKM), which facilitates the remeshing problem required for finite element analysis(FEA) and provides the higher order shape functions by increasing the continuity of the kernel functions. A linear elasticity is considered to obtain the required stress field around the crack tip for the evaluation of J-integral. The sensitivity of displacement field and stress intensity factor(SIF) with respect to shape design variables are derived using a material derivative approach. For efficient computation of design sensitivity, an adjoint variable method is employed tather than the direct differentiation method. Through numerical examples, The mesh-free and the DSA methods show excellent agreement with finite difference results. The DSA results are further extended to a shape optimization of crack propagation problems to control the propagation path.

This study presents experimental results of Steel-PSC mixed structural system having front-rear plate connection between Steel and Prestressed Concrete. Two kinds of Steel-PSC mixed structural system of 5.4m length were tested to evaluate flexural behaviors under four point loading, and 4 kinds of specimens with and without prestressing force at R & L type connection were tested to observe the shear behavior. Based on the test results of load-deflection curves and failure modes of specimens, it is found that the proposed L shape connection with front-rear plate connection between Steel and Prestressed Concrete has higher strength and stiffness. From the study, Steel-PSC mixed structural system with L shaped connection has a better structural performance in connection part.

In this paper, feasibility of dynamic characteristics recovery of delaminated composite structure is numerically studied by using active control algorithm and piezoelectric actuator. Macro-fiber composite(MFC), which has great flexibility and high actuating force, is considered as an actuator in this work. After construction of finite element model for delaminated composite structure based on improved layerwise theory, modal characteristics are investigated and changes of natural frequencies and mode shapes, caused by delamination, are observed. Then, active control algorithm is realized and implemented to system model and control performances are numerically evaluated. Dynamic characteristics of delaminated composite structure are effectively recovered to those of healthy composite structure.

Torsional characteristics of nonuniform circular waveguides were studied experimentally by using an in-plane laser vibrometer. The circumferential displacement along the axis of a rod was measured as a response of the torsional oscillation excited at one end of the rod. The experimental results obtained for a stepped circular rod and a conically-tapered rod were compared with theoretical predictions. The results of this paper show the possibility of using the in-plane laser vibrometer for the measurement of torsional vibrations.
