  • In this study, finite element analyses of crack propagation along a sinusoidal interface are performed by using cohesive elements. BK law is used for cohesive zone to consider mixed mode traction-separation relation at the crack tip on a sinusoidal interface of a double cantilever beam specimen. The shape of a sinusoidal interface crack and the cohesive strength and the cohesive energies in mixed mode cohesive laws are varied in numerical experiments, and load-displacement curves at the ends of a double cantilever beam specimen are obtained to investigate the crack propagation behavior along a sinusoidal interface.

  • This paper analyzed the effects related to the difference of the geometrical shape of the ground excavation by comparing the displacements of the earth retaining wall of the strut resulting from the change of the excavation breadth B and the excavation length L, adopting the three dimensional FDM analysis. It appeared that the displacement of the earth retaining wall of the strut increases in accordance with the increase of L/B and it decreases as it becomes nearer from the center to the comer where the temporary structural system forms, and the wale member is closured because of the effects of the confining effect by the closure of the earth retaining wall and the wale member. This paper proposed a formula in which the results of three dimensional FDM analysis which considers the shape of the excavation plane can be obtained from those of two dimentional FDM analysis which does not consider the shape of the excavation plane. And the results of the formula were compared with those of the site instrumentation analysis.

  • A new enhanced 8-node hybrid/mixed plane stress elements based on assumed stress fields and modifed shape functions has been presented. The assumed stress fields are derived from the non-conforming displacement modes, which are less sensitive to geometric distortion. Explicit expression of shape functions is modifed so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates under the same condition as 9-node isoparametric element. The newly developed element has been designated as 'HQ8-$14{\beta}$'. The presented element is compared with existing elements to establish its accuracy and efficiency. Over a wide range of mesh distortions, the element presented here is found to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements.

  • Ground reaction curve is very useful information for estimating the installation time of the tunnel support. The ground reaction curve can be estimated by analytical closed form solutions derived in case of circular section and isotropic stress condition. The nature of the ground reaction, however, depends significantly on tunnel configurations. Nevertheless, few purely analytical and experimental studies of this problem due to tunnel configurations appear to have been carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the influence of tunnel configurations in order to use simply in practical design. This paper describes a numerical study for the intial elastic displacement in the ground reaction curve due to configuration of tunnel excavation. In order to evaluate the applicability of analytical closed form solution in practical design, the parametric studies were carried out by numerical analysis in elastic tunnel behaviour. In the studies, S value, namely configuration factor, defined as the ratio between tunnel height (b) and width (a), varies between 0.5 and 3.0, initial ground vertical stress varies between 5~30 MPa for each S values. The results indicated that the self-supportability of ground is larger in the ground having low S value. It, however, is suggested that the applicability of closed form solution may not be adequate to determine directly the installation time of the support and self-supportability of ground. It should be necessary to perform the additional numerical analysis.

  • This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, in order to evaluate the application of lateral earth pressure to earth retaining wall supported by earth anchor in Jeju. The prediction of lateral earth pressure acting on the earth retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Hong & Yun lateral earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, the predicted value of the maximum horizontal displacement for site A was about 10 to 12 times greater than the measured value, and in the case of site B, the predicted value was evaluated as about 9 to 12 times greater than the measured value. That is, both sites showed a similar increase rate in the maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value compared to the measured value. In all field construction cases, the maximum horizontal displacement by measured values occurred in the sedimentary layer, soft rock layer, and clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was shown in a trapezoidal shape. The maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value occurred around the clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was elliptical. In the ground with a clinker layer, the measured value showed a very different horizontal displacement tendency from the predicted value, because the clinker layer exists in the form of a rock layer and continuous layer. In other words, it is unreasonable to apply the existing prediction method, which is overestimated, because the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution in Jeju show a tendency to be quite different from the predicted earth pressure distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research on the lateral earth pressure in the realistic Jeju that can secure more economic efficiency.

  • Parallelism and performance enhancement of calculating view factors in KSDS developed by KARI is introduced in this paper. View factor is an essential parameters of radiation thermal analysis for a spacecraft, and the amount of computation of them is not negligible. Especially, independent integration of view factors at each position of the orbit because the relative displace between solar panel and main body of a satellite varies with the position on the orbit. This paper introduces a range of parallelism of computing view factor and their performance, detection of obstructions by spatial search algorithm based on KD-Tree, and the reduction of the calculation of view factors of a satellite with relative motion between solar panel and main body, called updating fractional view factor matrix, for satellite thermal analysis.

  • Technique for analyzing pile installed by vibratory pile driver was developed and results of analysis obtained from variation of bias weight were studied. It can be seen from load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction that load transfer curve shift to downward as bias weight increases. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction becomes closer to shape of coil as the bias weight decreases. Magnitudes of toe resistances were not affected by the bias weight. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic toe resistance shows the similar tendency as the load transfer curve for skin friction exhibits. Vertical displacement increases as the bias weight increases and the shape of vertical displacement with time shows more distinct shape of wave.

  • In this study, shape optimization was performed to improve the vibration isolation capability of an anti-vibration rubber assembly, which is used in the field option cabin of agricultural tractors. A uniaxial tension test and biaxial tension test were performed to characterize the hyper-elastic material properties of rubber, and the data were used to calibrate the material model used in the finite element analyses. A field test was performed to quantify the input excitation from the tractor and the output response at the cabin frame. To account for the nonlinear behavior of rubber, static analyses were performed and the load-displacement curve of rubber was derived. The stiffness of the rubber was calculated from this curve and input to the harmonic analyses of the cabin. The results were verified using the test data. Taguchi's parameter design method was used to find the optimal shape of the anti-vibration rubber assembly, which indicated a shape with reduced stiffness. The vibration of the cabin frame was reduced by the optimization by as much as 35% compared to the initial design.

  • In this study, the analytic solutions and numerical methods were used to estimate the shape and size effects on the stability of underground openings. The stability of underground openings was evaluated by scrutinizing the effects of the rock mass quality, the state of in-situ stresses and the lateral earth pressure coefficient on the displacement, the stress concentration and the plastic region developed in the vicinity of the openings. The analytic solutions have shown that the stress concentration factor is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of openings. Through parametric study on the various shapes and sizes of underground openings the characteristics of the controlling factors concerned with the stability were analyzed. Then, the study was extended to the horseshoe-shaped openings commonly used for under ground storage. Through the extended study the effects of the stress ratio and the height-towidth ratio of openings on the maximum displacement and plastic region developed around the openings were estimated. The results have shorn that the height-to-width ratio of domestic storage caverns can be increased economically without stability problem, as far as the lateral earth pressure coefficient is appropriate.
