  • In this paper, aeroelastic instability and aerodynamic damping ratio of a helical $180^{\circ}$ model which shows better aerodynamic behavior in both along-wind and crosswind responses on a super tall building was investigated by an aeroelastic model test, and the aerodynamic damping ratio was evaluated from the wind-induced responses of the model by using Random Decrement Technique. Aerodynamic damping ratios evaluated in this study were verified through comparison with previous results obtained by quasi-steady theory. As a result, the aeroelastic instability of the helical $180^{\circ}$ model in crosswind direction were not occurred for any conditions with increasing the reduced wind velocity while the square model generally encounters aeroinstability due to the vortex shedding. The aerodynamic damping in along-wind direction for the helical $180^{\circ}$ and the square model increased monotonically both with reduced wind velocity, i.e., there is no relation with modifications of building shapes. On the other hand, in crosswind direction, the characteristics of aerodynamic damping ratio with reduced wind velocity for helical $180^{\circ}$ model were quit different from those of the square model.

  • The superstructure of general bridge like slab bridge and slab on girder bridge is composed of elastically supported isotropic plate. The objective of this study is to develop the new analysis method for elastically supported plate with general edge beam or girder(boundaries) under arbitrary out of plane loading. The displacement solutions for the macro-element of plate and beam are obtained by solving for the unknown interactive forces and moments at the beam or nodal line locations after satisfying equilibrium equation along the nodal line. The displacement functions for macro-elements ate proposed in single Fourier series using harmonic analysis, and the equilibrium equations of nodal line are composed by using slope-deflection method. The proposed analysis method is programmed by MS-Fortran and can be applied to all types of isotropic decks with bridge-type boundaries. Numerical examples involving elastically supported plates with various aspect ratio, loading cases, and bridge-type boundary conditions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of this program. The major advantage of this new analysis method is the development of a simple solution algorithm, leads to obtain rapidly responses of bridge deck system. This proposed method can be used in parametric study of behavior of bridge decks.

  • This paper presents exact solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of rectangular plates having two opposite, simply supported edges subjected to linearly varying normal stresses causing pure in-plane moments, the other two edges being free. Assuming displacement functions which are sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), the simply supported edge conditions are satisfied exactly. With this the differential equation of motion for the plate is reduced to an ordinary one having variable coefficients (in y). This equation is solved exactly by assuming power series in y and obtaining its proper coefficients (the method of Frobenius). Applying the free edge boundary conditions at y=0, b yields a fourth order characteristic determinant for the critical buckling moments and vibration frequencies. Convergence of the series is studied carefully. Numerical results are obtained for the critical buckling moments and some of their associated mode shapes. Comparisons are made with known results from less accurate one-dimensional beam theory. Free vibration frequency and mode shape results are also presented. Because the buckling and frequency parameters depend upon Poisson's ratio ( V ), results are shown for $0{\leq}v{\leq}0.5$, valid for isotropic materials.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges using geometric nonlinear finite element analysis method. The girder and mast in cable-stayed bridges show the combined axial load and bending moment interaction due to horizontal and vertical forces of inclined cable. So these members are considered as beam-column member. In this study, the nonlinear finite element analysis method is used to resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges in consideration of beam-column effect, large displacement effect (known as P-${\delta}$ effect) and cable sag effect. To analyze a cable-stayed bridge model, nonlinear 6-degree of freedom frame element and nonlinear 3-degree of freedom equivalent truss element is used. To resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior for various live load cases, the initial shape analysis is performed for considering dead load before live load analysis. Then the geometric nonlinear analysis for each live load case is performed. The deformed shapes of each model, load-displacement curves of each point and load-tensile force curves for each cable are presented for quantitative study of geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges.

  • Seismic safety of expansion joints for piping systems has been underscored by water pipe ruptures and leaks resulting from the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes. Metal bellows in piping systems are applied to prevent damage from earthquakes and road subsidence in soft ground. Designed with a series of corrugated segments called convolutions, metal bellows exhibit flexibility to accommodate displacements. Several studies have examined variations in convolution shapes and layers based on the intended performance to be evaluated. Nonetheless, the research on the seismic performance of complex bellows having multiple corrugation heights is limited. In this study, monotonic loading tests, cyclic loading tests, and fatigue tests were conducted to evaluate the shear performance in seismic conditions, of metal bellows with variable convolution heights. Single- and triple-layer bellows were considered for the experimentation. The results reveal that triple-layer bellows exhibit larger maximum deformation and fatigue life than single-layer bellows. However, the high stiffness of triple-layer bellows in resisting internal pressure poses certain disadvantages. The convolutions are less flexible at lower displacements and experience leakage at a rate related to the variable height of the convolutions in certain conditions. At lower deformation rates, the fatigue life is rated higher as the number of layers increase. It converges to a similar fatigue life at higher deformation rates.

  • In this paper, an improved four-node Reissner-Mindlin plate-bending element with enhanced assumed strain field is presented for the analysis of isotropic and laminated composite plates. To avoid the shear locking and spurious zero energy modes, the transverse shear behavior is improved by the addition of a new enhanced shear strain based on the incompatible displacement mode approach and bubble function. The "standard" enhanced strain fields (Andelfinger and Ramm, 1993) are also employed to improve the in-plane behaviors of the plate elements. The four-node quadrilateral element derived using the first-order shear deformation theory is designated as "14EASP". Several applications are investigated to assess the features and the performances of the proposed element. The results are compared with other finite element solutions and analytical solutions. Numerical examples show that the element is stable, invariant, passes the patch test, and yields good results especially in highly distorted regimes.

  • To obtain a more accurate response from larninated composite structures, the effect of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal strain/stress, and nonlinear variation of in-plane displacements vis-$\\grave{a}$-vis the thickness coordinate should be considered in the analysis. The improved higher-order theory was used to determine the critical buckling load and natural frequencies of laminated composite structures. Solutions of simply supported laminated composite plates and sandwiches were obtained in closed form using Navier's technique, with the results compared with calculated results using the first order and other higher-order theories. Numerical results were presented for fiber-reinforced laminates, which show the effects of ply orientation, number of layers, side-toithickness ratio, and aspects ratio.

  • The aim of this experimental study was to analyze the effect of the shape parameters and chamber pressure of a land-based oscillating water column (OWC) in regular incident waves. The magnitude of the free surface elevations inside the chamber was measured in a two-dimensional wave tank for various chamber skirt drafts and bottom slope angles. The surface elevations were also measured under both open chamber and partially open chamber conditions. From these measurements, the optimum shape of the OWC device could be predicted for the maximum wave energy conversion efficiency. It was found that the resonance frequency of the OWC system associated with incident waves moved toward the long wave region with increments of the draft of the chamber skirt and bottom slope. The behavior of the free surface elevation inside the chamber was also found to be dependent on the chamber pressure.

  • This study that is a successive secondary study right after the primary bending strength test of a new form of U-shape hybrid composite beam is a cyclic seismic test of U-shape hybrid composite beam and column conncetion. Three specimens are built for the variables which are kinds of columns, depth of beam, continuity or discontinuity of upper plate of beam, and a number of steel bars of end-beam. Kinds of columns are a reinforcement concrete column and a ACT column of CFT shape, and beam depth are 300, and 500 mm. Detail of connection is bolt connection with using a short bracket that is commonly use. As the result, deformability of 2~4% is ensured the floor displacement angle. If it is the negative moment, the maximum moment shows that its capacity is above the nominal moment.

  • The gangway connection of the articulated high speed railway vehicles (HSRV) is a double wrinkled rubber component to seal the air of the corridor under a range of angular deviations between the carriage end parts. From the results of non-linear structural analysis, one of the severe loading conditions for the connection is mixed mode (rolling+yawing) angular displacements while passing through the small-radius curved siding track of the HSRV depot. In this study, to ensure the safety enhancement of the component, the optimal design for the cross section of that was performed using the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method. Nonlinear finite element analysis confirmed that the decreases in the maximum principal strain of the optimized design under rolling and mixed modes are 68% and 39%, respectively, compared to the initial design.
