The damage of earthquakes have to achieve by probabilistic evaluation because of uncertainty of earthquake. Fragility analysis is a useful tool for predicting the probability of damage induced by the probable earthquake. This paper presents the probability of damage as a function of peak ground acceleration and estimates the probability of five damage levels for the pier of prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge subjected to given ground acceleration. At each 100 artificial earthquake motions were generated in terms of soil conditions, and nonlinear time domain analyses were performed for the damage states of the pier of PSC bridge structures. These damage states are described by displacement ductility result from seismic performance based on existing research results. Using the damage states and ground motion parameters, five fragility curves for the pier of PSC bridges with five types of dominant frequencies were constructed assuming a log-nomal distribution. It was found that there was a significant effect on the fragility curves due to the dominant frequencies.

This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of spatial structures after sizing optimization with linear assumptions. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of spatial structures against external load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of structures are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The post-buckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge difference between the post buckling behaviours of the initial and optimized structures. Therefore, the stability of optimized spatial structures with linear assumption should be throughly checked by appropriate nonlinear analysis techniques. Finally, the present numerical results are provided as benchmark test suite for future study of large spatial structures.
This paper described that the failure causes of reinforced slope are analyzed based on the effect of geological and rainfall. The analysis result confirmed that the rainfall has effects on the stability of reinforced slope. Therefore, it was applied to the dewatering method using collector well for slope stabilized, and then the analysis of seepage and slope stability were conducted on slope with the applied method. The results of seepage analysis are corresponded with failure cause by rainfall and the results of slope stability, which is applied to dewatering method, are satisfied with safety factor criterion. Therefore, it confirmed that the dewatering method using collector could be possible to apply in field and reasonable method for slope stabilized during heavy rainfall.
The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral planes and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces on the piles. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the pile penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the pile capacities.

In the mechanistic-empirical trackbed design of railways, the resilient modulus is the key input parameter. This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 0.6mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.
The nonlinear-brittle-plastic model derived from experiments as well as elastic and elasto-plastic models was applied to the analysis of the rock damaged zone around a highly stressed circular tunnel. The depths of stress redistribution and disturbed zone as well as the characteristic behaviors predicted from each numerical model were compared, As the magnitudes and stress differences of in situ stresses increased, influences of stress redistribution and stress disturbance on un(tiled region of rock mass also intensified. As a result, larger stress redistribution and disturbed zone as well as greater deviatoric stress and displacement were obtained by the nonlinear-brittle-plastic model rather than other conventional models such as elasto-plastic and elastic models. from such results, it was concluded that as the magnitudes and stress differences of in situ stresses increased, larger rock damaged zone might be predicted by the nonlinear-brittle-plastic model. Therefore, it is thought that the damage analysis may be indispensable far highly stressed tunnels.
There are uncertainties about the seismic load caused by seismic waves, which cannot be predicted due to the characteristics of the earthquake occurrence. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these uncertainties by probabilistic analysis. In this paper, procedures to develop a fragility curve that is a representative method to evaluate the safety of a structure by stochastic analysis were proposed for cut slopes. Fragility curve that considers uncertainties of soil shear strength parameters was prepared by Monte Carlo Simulation using pseudo static analysis. The fragility curve considering the uncertainty of the input ground motion was developed by performing time-history seismic analysis using selected 30 real ground input motions and the Newmark type displacement evaluation analysis. Fragility curves are represented as the cumulative probability distribution function with lognormal distribution by using the maximum likelihood estimation method.
Construction of sheet pile retaining walls in urban and coastal regions has resulted in sheet pile walls in close proximity to laterally loaded pile foundations. However, there is currently little information available in the literature to assist engineers for quantifying the response of sheet pile walls. This study provides a quantitative method for estimating sheet pile wall response due to loads imposed from a nearby laterally loaded pile. Three dimensional finite element analyses using commercial software, ABAQUS, were performed to assess the response of a sheet pile wall and nearby laterally loaded pile. The soils were modeled using Drucker-Prager constitutive model with associated flow rule, and the sheet pile wall and pile foundation were assumed to behave linear elastic. Four parameters were investigated: sheet pile wall bending stiffness, distance from the pile face to the wall, excavation depth in front of the sheet pile wall, and elastic modulus of the soil. Results from the analyses have been used to develop preliminary design charts and simple equations for estimating the maximum horizontal displacement and maximum bending moment in the sheet pile wall.

Numerical models of directional wave spectra for the analysis of offshore structural cable responses are verified. Alternative spreading models are used to predict wave-induced flows in water and for mooring systems. Hydrodynamic wave forces upon cable are estimated. using a Morison formula encompassing considerations for drag and for inertial forces both parallel and tangential to the slope of the cable. Numerical analysis for directional random waves. including consideration of displacement and velocity, trajectory, phase plane response. and tension are shown for mooring system cable responses at both the tether point for a buoy and at the anchor point. The effects of wave forces far different drag coefficients, various significant wave heights, and selected wave parameters are considered in the analysis. For the specific systems considered in the examples, it is demonstrated that wave period and height as well as wave spreading function parameters and drag coefficients, have an important effect upon the dynamic responses of the cable-buoy systems.

In this present study, in order to update the finite element model considering the boundary conditions, a method has been proposed. The conventional finite element model updating method, updates the finite element model by using the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, mode shape) which can be estimated from the ambient vibration test. Therefore, prediction of the static response of an actual structure is difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the physical properties is relatively hard. A novel method has been proposed to overcome the limitations of conventional method. Initially, the proposed method estimates the rotational spring constant of a finite element model using the deflection of structure and the rotational displacement of support measurements. The final updated finite element model is constructed by estimating the material properties of the structure using the finite element model with updated rotational spring constant and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. The proposed finite element model updating method is validated through numerical simulation and compared with the conventional finite element model updating method.
