  • Anchovy, Engraulis Japonica were caught by scoop net with fishing lamp in the surrounding water of Cheju and Seogwipo, and their gathering depth, gathering effects, change of catch by the age of the moon and submarine illumination were investigated from May to August 1985. Fish finder (SR-385) and fishing lamp (1 Kw incandescent) were set up at one meter of starboard of scoop net and one meter ahead of the prow together with two meters above the water surface respectively. The submarine illumunation was measured at 2m interval to both vertical direction of 0~18m and horizontal direction of 0~12m form the standard point which is to be 0.1m depth right under the fishing lamp. The catch of anchovy by scoop net was almost $90\%$ of total amount during the early period and the late period in moon age while as low as $10\%$ only was cought during the middle period. The catching depth of anchovy shoals by scoop net with fishing lamp was approximately 2~5m and submarine illuminations were 20~42 Lux, 24~48 Lux in Cheju and Seogwipo respec lively. Submarine illumination which could be cought by scoop net with fishing lamp should be 7~12 times lighter than before gathering since the shoals swiming at 10~15m depth which is 1.7~7 Lux illumination made by 1 Kw. AC 100V incandescent lamp, a surface gathering lamp of 2m high above anchovy scoop net came up to 2~5m depth which is 20~42 Lux illumination. The catching depth of anchovy by scoop net was 2~3m and this could be increased to 4m even though the AC voltage was decreased from 100V to 80V at final fishing stage.

  • Three kinds of samples, Trachpenalus curiviostris, Astroconger myriaster and Cantherines modestus which were pre-treated in a processing plant were frozen at $-40^{\circ}C$ in a contact freezer and stored for 32 days. The numbers of general bacterium, coliforms and E. coli were measured at 8 day intevals during frozen storage and the isolated strains was classified. The results are as follows; 1. The numbers of coliforms and E. coli in the samples before freezing were much higher, than those during frozen storage and it tended to decrease. 2. General bacteria showed little change in number before and after being frozen. Among 97 strains of isolated coliforms, only 4 strains of K. aerogenes I ana 4 strains of K, cloacae were classified and the rest was not determined. 3. Ninety percent of coliforms was found to be psychrotrophic coliforms, which were able to grow at $5^{\circ}C$ within a week. 4. Vibrio and Pseudomonas were superior in number before freezing while Flavobacterium cytophaga and Moraxella were superior during frozem storage.

  • The displacement data monitored during tunnel construction play a crucial role in predicting the behaviour of ground around and ahead of excavation face. However, the management criteria for monitoring data are not well established especially for the reliable analysis on varying aspect of displacement data along with chainage. In this study, we evaluated the applicability of x-MR control chart method, which is kind of applied statistical management method, for the analysis of displacement monitoring data in terms of prediction of possible collapse or induced cracks. As a result, a possible abnormal behaviour could be predicted beforehand at 5 ~ 13 m ahead or on at least one day before it occurred by using x-MR control chart method. In addition, it is noted that the moving range for the x-MR control chart should be set to 5~10 for this purpose.

  • This study introduces a method to easily fabricate highly monodisperse pectin hydrogel microfibers in a microfluidic device by using partial gelation. The hydrodynamic parameters between the pectin aqueous solution and the calcium ions containing oil solution are precisely controlled to form a stable elongation flow of the pectin aqueous solution, and partial gelation of the pectin aqueous solution is performed by the chelating of the calcium ions at the interface between the two phases. The partially gelled pectin aqueous solution is phase-separated from the oil solution in an aqueous calcium chloride solution outside the microfluidic device and is completely gelled to produce monodisperse pectin hydrogel microfibers. The thickness of the pectin hydrogel microfiber is controlled in a reproducible manner by controlling the volumetric flow rate of the initially injected pectin aqueous solution. The pectin hydrogel microfibers were 200 to 500 micrometers in diameter and had a coefficient of variation below 5% under all thickness conditions, indicating that the pectin hydrogel microfibers produced by partial gelation are highly monodisperse. In addition, biomaterials can be immobilized to the pectin hydrogel microfibers produced by a single process, demonstrating the possibility that our pectin hydrogel microfiber can be used as carriers for biomaterials or tissue engineering.

  • The purpose of this study aims to explore shipowner's lost profit and its claim resulted from delay in redelivery under time charter with the Achilleas case. In this case, the charterers submitted that there was an established prima facie measure of damages in cases of late delivery, namely the difference between the market rate and the charter-party rate for the period from the time when the vessel should have been delivered until the time of her actual redelivery. An award for lost profit in respect of a subsequent charter could only be made under the second limb because the charterers had not been told, at or before the making of the addendum, that the owners were going to enter into a subsequent fixture and that it was critical that redelivery take place on time. However, the owners said their losses that was a not unlikely consequence of the charterers' breach. There was no special rule that the first limb could only lead to damages calculated by taking the difference between the market and the charter-party rate for the overrun. To award damages in the Achilleas case on the basis of the difference between the market and the charter rate for the overrun would compensate the owners for only a fraction of the true loss caused by the breach.

  • The dispersion indices, spatial pattern and sampling plan for pink citrus rust mite (PCRM), Aculops pelekassi, monitoring was investigated. Dispersion indices of PCRM indicated the aggregated spatial pattern. Taylor's power law provided better description of variance-mean relationship than Iwao's patchiness regression. Fixed-precision levels (D) of a sequential sampling plan were developed using by Taylor's power law parameters generated from PCRM on fruit sample (cumulated number of PCRM in $cm^2$ of fruit). Based on Kono-Sugino's empirical binomial the mean density per $cm^2$ could be estimated from fruit ratio with more than 12 rust mites per $cm^2$: $ln(m)=4.61+1.23ln[-ln(1-p_{12})]$. To determine the optimal tally threshold, the variance (var(lnm)) for mean (lnm) in Kono-Sugino equation was estimated. The lower and narrow ranged change of variance for esimated mean showed at a tally threshold of 12. To estimate PCRM mean density per $cm^2$ at fixed precision level 0.25, the required sample number was 13 trees, 5 fruits per tree and 2 points per fruit (total 130 samples).

  • The purpose of this study is the suggestion of optimized parameters in OI (Optimal Interpolation) by experimental study. The observation of applying optimal interpolation is ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data at the southwestern sea of Korea. FVCOM (Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model) is used for the barotropic model. OI is to the estimation of the gain matrix by a minimum value between the background error covariance and the observation error covariance using the least square method. The scaling factor and correlation radius are very important parameters for OI. It is used to calculate the weight between observation data and model data in the model domain. The optimized parameters from the experiments were found by the Taylor diagram. Constantly each observation point requires optimizing each parameter for the best assimilation. Also, a high accuracy of numerical model means background error covariance is low and then it can decrease all of the parameters in OI. In conclusion, it is expected to have prepared the foundation for research for the selection of ocean observation points and the construction of ocean prediction systems in the future.

  • CFC(CFC-12, CFC-11 and CFC-113) analytical system for air and water was constructed using a customized purge and trap extraction device and a gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector. Sampling methods of air and water for CFCs were also established. The analytical system was experimentally optimized to result in reproducibilities of triplicates less than 2% for current air samples and less than 5% for groundwater samples with CFC-12 concentration of 160 to 180 pg/kg, and verified with respect to the CFC system in USGS, which showed analytical results were in agreement within 10%. CFCs in air were monitored at three sites over 19-month period in the central part of South Korea, and the result indicates no significant local sources of CFCs in those areas. For groundwater in Jeju Island, CFCs were measured over a year with a two-month interval. The time-series data showed seasonal fluctuations which could be interpreted by the effect of recharge pulse derived from large amount of rainfall during monsoon period with a few month delay, which indicates high permeability of basaltic rocks in Jeju Island.

  • The downstream reach of the Han River adjoining Seoul in Korea was the upper boundary of an estuary where tidal effect on the flow rate could be exerted. According to the comprehensive river regulation project, the river was channelize dand impounded by two overflow dams, which provided favorable condition for algal growth in this sewage polluted eutrophic reach. In this study primary productivity of phytoplankton was measured in the down reach and the autochthonous and allochthonous organic carbon loadings were estimated. Primary production of phytoplankton measured by C-14 uptake and P-I model method ranged from 140 to $4,890\;mgC\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (median value $1,865\;mgC\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) showing the level of eutrophic lakes. Phytoplankton density that varied according to water flow rate was highest in spring. Allochthonous organic carbon loading was dominated by sewage input through tributaries in most of days except flood flow period. The average proportion of autochthonous carbon generation by phytoplankton was 40.9%, which is very high proportion for a lotic habitat.

  • To understand the spatio-temporal fluctuations and ecological characteristics of heterotrophic dinoflagellate $Noctiluca$ $scintillans$, we investigated their population densities and environmental factors during four seasons at 20 stations of Gwangyang Bay and at 23 stations of Jinhae Bay in 2010. $N.$ $scintillans$ was seasonally abundant during spring and summer, with temperature ranging 15 to $27^{\circ}C$ in the both bays, whereas the density reduced in fall and winter. The populations of $N.$ $scintillans$ at each station in both bays showed a significantly positive relationship with water temperature, indicating that relatively high water temperature within its optimum temperature stimulates the growth of $N.$ $scintillans$ population. In particular, low water temperature (<$4^{\circ}C$) and salinity (<12 psu) led to disappear of $N.$ $scintillans$ population, although they were observed at all season in both bays. Spatio-temporal variations of Chl.$a$ concentration was not significantly correlated with $N.$ $scintillans$ population densities. However, the $Noctiluca$ abundances were also high during spring and summer season when relatively high Chl.$a$ concentration was observed in both bays. This result suggests that standing crops of phytoplankton may be one of important contributing factors to enhance the abundance of $N.$ $scintillans$.
