  • Numerical inverstigation of heat transfer in phase-change energy storage devices was performed in order to aid In the design process for a finned Phase-Change Material( PCM). A simplified model based on a quasi-linear, transient, thin fin equation, which predicts the fraction of melted phase-change material, and the shape of liquid-solid interface as a function of time, is used. The model is solved by using Finite Volume Method(FVM), and the numerical results have showed good agreement with experimental data.

  • In enclosed areas such as railway tunnels, the heat and smoke generated by a fire can pose a tremendous risk to the life of passengers. To prevent or mitigate such scenarios, fire detectors are installed for early fire detection. This numerical study is preformed for establishing the method of detecting performance of fire detectors installed on railway tunnels. Numerical analysis are conducted using the fire dynamics simulator, developed by the NIST. The temperature of the tunnel walls is determined using the assumed exterior structure of the tunnel. In addition, the detection times of detectors installed at different locations in the tunnel are obtained for different sizes of the fire source, and the results are compared and analyzed.

  • We report the effective fabrication processes for more practical monolith catalysts consisting of washcoated alumina on a cordierite honeycomb monolith (CHM) and iron oxides nanoparticles in the alumina prepared by a simple dry coating method. It is confirmed that iron oxide nanoparticles were well deposited into the mesopore of washcoated alumina which is formed on the corner wall of honeycomb channel, and the effect of annealing temperature was evaluated for carbon monoxide oxidation catalysts. $Fe_2O_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3/CHM$ catalysts annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ exhibited the most enhanced catalytic activity, 100% conversion efficiency at more than $200^{\circ}C$ operating temperature.

  • A high heat flux test facility using a graphite heating panel was constructed and is presently in operation at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, which is called KoHLT-1. Its major purpose is to carry out a thermal cycle test to verify the integrity of a HIP (hot isostatic pressing) bonded Be mockups which were fabricated for developing HIP joining technology to bond different metals, i.e., Be-to-CuCrZr and CuCrZr-to-SS316L, for the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) first wall. The KoHLT-1 consists of a graphite heating panel, a box-type test chamber with water-cooling jackets, an electrical DC power supply, a water-cooling system, an evacuation system, an He gas system, and some diagnostics, which are equipped in an authorized laboratory with a special ventilation system for the Be treatment. The graphite heater is placed between two mockups, and the gap distance between the heater and the mockup is adjusted to $2{\sim}3\;mm$. We designed and fabricated several graphite heating panels to have various heating areas depending on the tested mockups, and to have the electrical resistances of $0.2{\sim}0.5$ ohms during high temperature operation. The heater is connected to an electrical DC power supply of 100 V/400 A. The heat flux is easily controlled by the pre-programmed control system which consists of a personal computer and a multi function module. The heat fluxes on the two mockups are deduced from the flow rate and the coolant inlet/out temperatures by a calorimetric method. We have carried out the thermal cycle tests of various Be mockups, and the reliability of the KoHLT-1 for long time operation at a high heat flux was verified, and its broad applicability is promising.

  • Er:YAG laser has been considered a promising alternative to dental drill and many researches indicate that adjustment to variable parameters, including water flow rate, pulse energy and pulse repetition rate, can be made to improve ablation ability and efficiency of the laser. Of these parameters, addition of water spray during irradiation has been thought to ablate dental hard tissue more rapidly and safely. The purpose of this study was to investigate tooth ablation amount by Er:YAG laser irradiation as related to varied water flow rates added and, ultimately to find the most effective water flow rate for ablation. In addition, the temperature change of pulp chamber during irradiation was also monitored on the irradiated and opposite pulpal walls, respectively. An Er:YAG laser with contact mode was employed. Extracted human molars were split into two pieces for ablation experiment. Pulse energies of 200 and 300 mJ with a pulse repetition rate of 20 Hz and 5 water flow rates (1.6, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0, and 10.0 ml/min) were applied. Each irradiation was performed for 3 seconds. According to these parameters, experimental groups were divided into 10 subgroups which consisted of 5 specimens. For temperature experiment, another 5 tooth-specimens were prepared in the manner that pulp chamber was open through access cavity preparation and two temperature-measuring probes were placed respectively on the irradiated and the opposite walls of pulp chamber. From the experiment on ablation amount related to different water flow rates, it was shown that the least water flow rate of 1.6 ml/min ablated more than any other water flow rates (p<0.000). When the irradiation for 3 seconds, combined with the pulse repetition time of 20Hz and the water flow rate of 1.6 ml/min was done to tooth specimen, the temperature rise was not noticeable both on the irradiated and the opposite pulpal walls (less than 3$^{\circ}C$) and there was no significant difference in temperature rise between the two pulse energies, 200 and 300 mJ. From the results of this study, it is suggested that tooth ablation with Er:YAG laser can be done effectively and safely at a energy between 200 and 300 mJ/pulse and a pulse repetition rate of 20 Hz when the lasing is conjugated with the water flow rate of 1.6ml/min.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of die temperature and dimension on extraction pattern, extract yield, and crude saponin content of extruded white ginseng. The extrusion variables were die temperature $(110\;and\;120^{\circ}C)$ and die dimension (3 holes with 1.0 mm, 2 holes with 2.0 mm, and 1 hole with 3.0 mm diameter). The browness and redness were indicator of active components in ginseng extract. Both were used to evaluate the effect of die temperature and die dimension on release pattern and release rate constant. Browness and redness of extract achieved its lowest value at die temperature $110^{\circ}C$ and 2 holes with 2.0 mm diameter, indicating the lowest extraction rate constant. Extract yield highly increased by extrusion treatment. Extract yield and crude saponin content were the highest at die temperature $120^{\circ}C$ and 1 hole with 3.0 mm diameter. In conclusion, extrusion process has contributed significantly in improvement of release rate of its active components.

  • In this research, the surface covered curing method using the double-layered bubble sheet was evaluated. This double-layered bubble sheet has outstanding insulating performance with its low heat conductivity and high economic feasibility with its high durability. However, in the case of wall-typed building construction, the area of exposed rebar is curious on curing performance with the double-layered bubble sheet in spite of the double-layered bubble sheet showed favorable performance for slab. Therefore, in this research, regarding the actually constructed wall-typed apartment building, the most efficient curing method was suggested based on the evaluation of curing performance depending on temperature distribution depending on various location of covered or exposed rebar. As a result, the D method was determined as the most efficient curing method without any concern of early-age frost damage. However, by considering easiness of construction, the B method of covering the pieced double-layered bubble sheet on gap between rebars can be another option of desired result.

  • Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has attracted growing interest, as it is an effective method for the rapid extraction of bioactive compounds from plants with a high extraction efficiency comparable to the conventional extraction. In this study, UAE was used for the extraction of polyphenols from lipid extracted microalgae (Tetraselmis KCTC 12236BP) and the effects of five extraction variables on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) were studied. For the optimization of extraction parameters, particle size, solid-to-liquid (L/S) ratio, ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time have been examined as independent variables. All variables exhibited the significant effects on the extraction of TPC and extraction temperature showed the most significant effect among five variables. The optimal extraction conditions were the extraction using mixed particle, S/L ratio of 10%, ethanol concentration of 60%, extraction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and extraction time of 30 min, which gave the 8.7 mg GAE/g DW for TPC. Compared with conventional hot-water extraction, TPC extraction under UAE was increased by up to 1.8 fold with same extraction condition. This study showed that UAE under low temperature and short extraction time was proven to be an effective extraction process for TPC production from LEA compared to conventional hot-water extraction process.
