  • A new wall impaction model for diesel spray is described in this paper. The gas phase is modelled in terms of the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach. The droplet parcel contains many thousands of drops assumed to have the same size, temperature and velocity components. The droplet parcel equations of trajectory, momentum, mass and energy are written in Lagrangian form. The new drop-wall interaction model is proposed, which is based on experimental investigations on individual drops, and it is applied for the general non-orthogonal grid. The model is then assessed through comparison with experiments over a wide range of test conditions of sprays. The results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • In the case of analyzing the combustion phenomena in a small high speed DI diesel engine, one demands the experimental results of the impinging spray on the wall as a basic characteristics. In the experiments presented here, diesel fuel oil was injected into a high pressure chamber in which compressed air at room temperature was charged. The single spray was impinged on a flat wall. The growth of the spray was photographed with transmitted light or scattered light. The effect of the spray axis angle to the wall on the impinging spray was revealed. Finally, the experimental results was presented, that is, the radius and height of the impinging spray was influenced by above mentioned variable.

  • A level set method is combined with the volume-of-fluid method so that the coupled method can not only calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The coupled level set and volume-of-fluid(CLSVOF) method is efficiently implemented by employing an interface reconstruction algorithm which is based on the explicit relationship between the interface configuration and the fluid volume function. The CLSVOF method is applied for numerical simulation of droplet impact on solid surfaces with variable contact angles. The numerical results are found to preserve mass conservation and to be in good agreement with the data reported in the literature. Also, the present method proved to be applicable to the complex phenomena such as breakup and rebound of a droplet.

  • A numerical simulation is performed for the cooling heat transfer of a heated cylindrical pedestal by an axisymmetric jet impingement. Based on the k- $\varepsilon$- f$\sub$${\mu}$/ model of Park et at., the linear and nonlinear stress-strain relations are extended. The Reynolds number based on the jet diameter(D) is fixed at Re$\sub$D/ = 23000. The local heat transfer coefficients are compared with available experimental data. The predictions by k- $\varepsilon$-f$\sub$${\mu}$/ model are in good agreement with the experiments, whereas the standard 7- f model does not properly resolve the flow structures.

  • A diesel engine has become smaller and higher, thus sprays injected in high speed may be impinged on a small combustion chamber wall if there is not enough strong swirl. Those combustion chambers should have proper measures to avoid the spray impinged and deposited on a wall. One of the measures is a chamber prepared impingement parts raised on a chamber wall surface. In this system a spray is injected into the raised pip, broken into a number of smaller drops and spreaded out away from the wall surface. Therefore the fuel droplets distributes over inside of the combustion chamber. In this study, the positions, sizes and angles of the raised land are discussed to help the chamber design using spray wall impaction. The characteristics of the spray impinged on various lands are investigated and compared with each other. Then chamber shapes are discussed with the spray characteristics and the proper positions and size are proposed in some chamber volumes.

  • Heat transfer characteristics for an air jet vertically impinging on a flat plate with a set of hybrid rods was investigated numerically using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$turbulent model. A commercial finite-volume code FLUENT is used. The rods had cross sections of half circular and rectangular shapes. The heating surface was heated with a constant heat flux value of $1020W/m^2$. Parameters investigated were the jet Reynolds number, nozzle -to-plate spacing, the rod pitch and rod-to-plate clearance. The local and average Nusselt number were found to be dependent on the rod pitch and the clearance because installing rods disturbed the flow. Higher convective heat transfer rate occurred in the whole plate as well as in the wall jet region.

  • The turbulent flow characteristics of impinging jet have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry with a movable impinging wall. Turbulences were generated by the meshed jet as well as the typical round jet and their characteristics were compared, of mean velocity profiles, turbulent intensities. Reynolds stresses, similarities and their centerline flow behaviors. The meshed jet tends to make shear layer wider than the normal one in the initial region and the velocity profiles of the normal jet is rather contractive being compared with those of the meshed one near the wall. The effect of meshed exit appears only within 4D at the begining of jets and the cascading process of the meshed one marches more rapidly than that of the normal jet. The wall effects appear in the downstream of about 0.85 H to the impinging wall for every case of wall positions in both nozzles.

  • Experiments are conducted to get basic information of under-expanded impinging jet in the near field. Experimental parameters are impinging angle and under-expanded ratio. As the under-expanded ratio increases, the maximum surface pressure decreases and the reducing effect of recovery factor increases. As the impinging angle decreases, the peak of surface pressure is displaced slightly from the geometric center of the plate to the upward region and the cooling region is expanded in the downward region, whereas it is contracted in the upward region.

  • The heat transfer characteristics for air jet vertically impinging on a flat plate which had a set of hybrid rod were investigated experimentally. The rod had a cross section made with a half of circular cross section and that of rectangular and was installed in front of the plate. The heating surface was given constant heat flux value of 1020 W/$m^2^{\circ]C$ and the problem parameters investigated were jet Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate spacing and the rod size. The local and local average Nusselt number characteristics were found to be dependent on the rod size because the flow was disturbed by installing the rod. Higher convective heat transfer rate occurred in the whole plate as well as in the stagnation region.
