금속 벨로우즈의 성형 해석 (Forming Analysis of a Metal Bellows)

  • The manufacturing of metal bellows consists of the four main forming processes, deep-drawing, ironing, tube bulging and folding. Among these, the bulging and folding processes are critically important because the quality of metal bellows is greatly influenced by the forming conditions of these processes. In the present study, the finite element analysis technique is applied to the bulging and folding processes to obtain information about the design parameters of a metal bellows.

  • Multi layer bellows are being manufactured for commercial vehicle because of the characteristic of high durability compared with single iaγor bellows used to passenger vehicle. Finite Element Method (FEM) study and optimization about single layer bellows are actively progressed, but FEM study about multi layer bellows which have gap between layer is rarely processed. Therefore, this article presents finite element modeling of multi layer bellows for the improvement of simulation reliability. For the shape optimization of multi layer bellows, design of experiment and Taguchi method are used.

  • 가스 발생기 산화제 개폐 밸브에 사용되는 벨로우즈의 구조 해석 및 시험이 수행되었다. 해석은 상온 및 극저온에서 EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) 표준 및 상용 유한 요소 해석프로그램인 Abaqus v6.9를 이용하여 수행되었다. 스프링 강성, 응력 및 피로 수명 해석 결과들이 비교되었고 유한 요소 해석 결과에서 접촉 및 재질의 소성에 의한 영향을 살펴보았다.

  • The focus of this study is modeling technique for a bellows in vehicle exhaust system. Bellows was developed using tile finite element model by replacing with the equivalent beam. The equivalent beam model were studied in detail. Non-structural node in the cross section of original model is given to expressing their motion. Equivalent mass matrix and stiffness matrix calculated using Guyan reduction method. Material Properties of beam was obtained from the direct comparison between equivalent model and that of Timoshenko beam model. The calculated natural frequencies and mode shape are compared with the reference results and coincided well. The results were compared with the confirmed results, which were in good agreement.

  • Pro-program function of Pro/E has been utilized to expedite the design process of bellows. Design parameters selected for bellows design are manipulated to obtain the shapes user specified. User-oriented function may automate the bellows design process and this function may enable to reduce the design time remarkably. Generated bellows solid model has been applied to study of design sensitivity and optimum design. Among the selected design parameters, thickness of bellows affects system response most. Control-ring installed bellows may reduce the stress and prove to be an effective element for heavy load. The finite element analysis results combined with 3D model generated by pro-program may provide the feasible design directions to the bellows designer.

자동차용 벨로우즈의 구조해석에 관한 연구 (A Study on Structual Analysis of Bellows for Automotive)

  • The purpose of the study is to perform structual analysis of 9 type bellows for automotive. The bellows joint which was used as a absorber or safety equipment to prevent the deformation or fracture of a structure, has been analyzed by the FEM modeling using axi-symmetric conical frustum element. Using FEM the general behavior of bellows analysis can be investigate easily, as well as the stability of the analysis can be guarantee. The results of finite element structual analysis and actual result gave a good agreement.

줄-톰슨 극저온 냉각기용 벨로우즈의 변형해석 (Deformation Analysis of Self-regulating Bellows in Joule-Thomson Cryocooler)

  • Bellows is an important component in Joule-Thomson cryocooler, which minimize the excessive flow of the cryogenic gas. The bellows is made of Monel 400 and its geometry is an axial symmetric shell. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume within bellows must be satisfied with Benedict-Webb-Rubin state equation. Moreover, Poisson's ratio of Monel 400 is nearly constants, but its Young's modulus varies for a drop in temperature. Under these conditions, bellows contracts in the axial direction like a spring. To evaluate deformation of bellows at cryogenic temperature, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis are iteratively used in this research. the numerical results show that deformation of the bellows is approximately linear for change of temperature.

수소압축기 내장 충전탱크용 벨로우즈의 형상 파라미터 변화에 따른 구조 성능 고찰 (Study on Structural Performance by Shape Parameter Variation of Bellows for the Hydrogen Compressor-embedded Refueling Tank)

  • In this study, design parameter exploration based on finite element analysis was performed to find the optimal shape of bellows, the key component of compressor-embedded refueling tank for a newly developed hydrogen refueling station capable of high-pressure charging above 900 bar. In the design parametric study, the design variables took into account the bellows shapes such as contour radius and span spacing, and the response factors were set to the maximum stress and the gap in the contact direction. In the shape design of the compressor bellows for hydrogen refueling station considered in this study, it was found that adjusting the contour span is an appropriate design method to improve the compression performance and structural safety. From the selection of optimal design, the maximum stress was reduced to 49% compared to the initial design without exceeding the material yield stress.

줄-톰슨 마이크로 냉각기용 소형 금속 벨로우즈의 구조적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Structural Characteristics of Miniature Metal Bellows in Joule-Thomson Micro-Cryocooler)

  • A miniature metal bellows is used to minimize the excessive flow of the cryogenic gas in Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of metal alloy and its geometry is axisymmetric. The bellows is filled with high pressure gas. It contracts or expands in the axial direction for a wide change of temperature, because the pressure and volume inside the bellows must be satisfied with state equation of the gas. Therefore, in order to design the bellows in Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler, it is important to evaluate deformation of the bellows under internal pressure exactly. Considering geometric nonlinearity, deformations analysis of the bellows were obtained by a commercial finite element code ANSYS, The bellows was modeled by 3-node axisymmetric shell elements with reduced integration. Experiments were also performed to prove the validity of proposed numerical analysis. The results by numerical analysis and experiments were shown in good agreements.

U형 벨로우즈의 유한요소해석과 특정 강성을 위한 형상최적설계 (A Finite Element Analysis and Shape Optimal Design with Specified Stiffness for U-typed Bellows)

  • A bellows is a component installed in the automobile exhaust system to reduce the impact from an engine. It's stiffness has a great influence on the natural frequency of the system. Therefore, it must be designed to keep the specified stiffness that requires in the system. This study present the finite element analysis of U-typed bellows using a curved conical frustum element and the shape optimal design with specified stiffness. The finite element analysis is verified by comparing with the experimental results. In the shape optimal design, the weight is considered as the cost function. The specified stiffness from the system design is transformed to equality constraints. The formulation has inequality constraints imposed on the fatigue limit, the natural frequencies, the buckling load and the manufacturing conditions. A procedure for shape optimization adopts a thickness, a corrugation radius, and a length of annular plate as optimal design variables. The external loading conditions include the axial and lateral loads with a boundary condition fixed at an end of the bellows. The recursive quadratic programming algorithm is selected to solve the problem. The result are compared with the existing bellows, and the characteristics of the bellows is investigated through the optimal design process. The optimized shape of the bellows are expected to give quite a good guideline to the practical design.
