  • The purpose of this study is restructuring the template to apply the 'Backward design' for Home Economics Instruction. This study reviewed the theory of Wiggins and McTighe, the advocates of backward design, and examined the template for version 2.0 of Wiggins and McTighe (2011). In addition, This study analyzed various previous researches using backward design, and drew implications for template restructuring for applying backward design on Home Economics Instruction. In addition, the validity of the template was verified through facial validity through the expert council. Through this process, the final 5 stages (1. Curriculum Analysis → 2. Instructional Design (Learning Experience Design ↔ Evaluation Design (Performance Task Planning) → 3. Instruction Flow → 4. Class guide for each class → 5. Evaluation record, and feedback)suggested templates for applying backward design. Future research will use the restructured assumptions and templates to develop teaching materials in the Home Economics areas of the 2015 revised curriculum. In future research, field research should be carried out on how the Home Economics instruction with backward design affects learners.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop understanding-oriented materials based on backward course design model and analyze their effects on 'biology and environment' unit of elementary school science. Backward Design starts from a specification of learning outcomes and decisions on methodology and syllabus are developed from the learning outcomes. This method has a strength maintaining consistency between educational contents-evaluation-learning activities and also promoting student's authentic understanding. The 78 students 6th graders participated in this experiments. Data was collected using project activities, the science academic emotion scale and academic achievement. The collected data was analyzed by t-test and ANCOVA analysis using the SPSS 23 statistical program. The following major conclusions were drawn on the basis of data analysis. First, the experimental group showed a relatively accurate understanding of the contents of science but they could not produce creative output in two project activities. Second, the interaction effect of the instruction based on backward curriculum design and science academic emotion was not significant statistically. Third, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in the academic achievement of 'biology and environment' unit.

  • The backward design suggested in the 2015 revised curriculum takes into consideration the consistency between a goal and its evaluation, and emphasizes the essence of knowledge. However, the method for designing lesson plans is different from those of the past and, as a result, teachers in the field have experienced some difficulty in applying the design. Accordingly, this study was aimed at examining the differences between the taxonomy of educational objectives with which teachers are familiar and the viewpoint of informatics. The result of the analysis indicated no difference when applying the hierarchy of the six-sided view of the concept of understanding, of which teachers felt some difficulty in terms of applying the backward design. However, the analysis did show some similarity to the hierarchy of the six levels suggested in the taxonomy of the educational objectives. In general, when a new theory is suggested, it is very difficult for it to be accepted and applied. This study holds significance in that it suggests that a new theory must be accepted on the basis of sufficient analysis along with the necessity of efforts to be dedicated in order to increase its applicability.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a 'Healthy Couple Relationship' curriculum(plan) for high school home economics based on backward design. In this study, the content elements of 'Healthy Couple Relationship' were extracted through literature analysis, and the need for contents of 'Healthy Couple Relationship' was surveyed in 197 families of home economics teachers and 154 high school students. Based on this, the 'Healthy Couple Relationship' curriculum(plan) of high school home economics curriculum was developed as the backward design, and it was verified by the expert group. The results are as follows: First, when measured on a 5-point Likert scale, the mean scores of the need for content elements of 'Healthy Couple Relationship' was 4.39 for teachers, and 4.02 for students, respectively. The content elements of 'understanding dating violence' was 4.70 for teachers and 4.19 for students. Second, the developed 'Healthy Couple Relationship' curriculum consists of two templates, one for each unit, including curriculum goals, unit composition and unit goals, 8 learning subjects and content elements, evaluation plans including 24 lesson plans. In this study, it is meaningful to propose a "Healthy Couple Relationship" curriculum as an elective course in high school home economics curriculum in preparation for the high school credit system, and to lay the foundations for opening elective courses.

  • The course of home economics education is the one that fosters the ability to solve life problems. The life problem is permanent involving the individual, family, and society in overall. Thus, this study was to compose a class which applied the backward design model suggested by Wiggins and McTighe focusing on the usability of it in the educational filed of the home science to overcome the limitation of the education in the filed based on that critical mind. Therefore, this study developed the teaching·learning plan applying the backward design model to the 'Food and Nutrition' unit of the home economics education. It is expected that the unit and the teaching plan are used as materials for the class on the dietary life unit which is meaningful for learners in the educational field of the home economics education.

  • This study aimed to present a concrete and systematic lesson design model for practical problem-based learning in Practical Arts based on the backward design model. To this purpose, this study was conducted in the following four stages: analysis, design, development, and evaluation. In the analysis stage, the literature related to the practical-problem-based curriculum and the instructional design model were reviewed as the theoretical foundations, and the 2015 revision of Practical Arts curriculum was analyzed. In the design stage, based on the literature review, the stages and sub-elements of practical-problem-based learning in Practical Arts were determined, and a template of instructional design was constructed. In the development stage, the design model was drafted based on the stages and sub-elements determined at the design stage. In the evaluation stage, the drafted design model from the development stage was evaluated, modified, and enhanced through expert verification. Based on the suggestions from the experts, the 'practical problem setting' stage was added to the original three-stage model, resulting in a model composed of the following four stages: practical problem setting, goal setting, evaluation planning, and learning activity planning. The experts appraised that the developed model of practical-problem-based instructional design in Practical Arts to be a systematic template that would serve as a concrete guideline for teachers who are trying to design classes based on practical problems.
