  • Numerous clay veins along fractures such as fault, joints, cracks and small fissures are found in granitic rocks in the Korean Peninsula. Granitic rocks of three geological stages (Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene) occur in the Korean Peninsula, and are known as the Daebo, Bulguksa and Hoam granites, respectively. Specimens from clay veins composed or mainly mica clay mineral (illite) were dated using the K-Ar method with the hosted granitoids. The respective ages were as follows. Jurassic: granites 143.7 Ma and 160 Ma, clay mineral veins 104 Ma and 107 Ma: Cretaceous: granite 133.2 Ma, clay mineral veins 93.6 Ma, 84.2 Ma and 84.3 Ma: Paleogene: granite 39.7 Ma and 35.4Ma, clay mineral veins 27.1 Ma and 23.9 Ma. The ages of the clay veins in the Korean Peninsula are clearly much younger than those of their hosted granitoids. This contrasts with data for similar clay veins in Cretaceous and Paleogene granitoids in southwest Japan, where the K-Ar ages of mica clay minerals are slightly younger than their host rocks, or are almost the same.

  • Baekasan Acheon cave located in Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do is a natural limestone cave only found in this province. In this study, the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of speleothems collected from Baekasan Acheon cave were identified and the capability of carbonate mineral formation by aerobic microorganisms enriched from the cave and the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of carbonate minerals formed by the microorganisms were investigated. The samples of sediments (clay) and speleothems (shelfstone and cave coral) were collected at three sites in the cave. The samples of shelfstone and cave coral were identified mainly as carbonate mineral, Mg-rich calcite, and clay minerals were composed of quartz, muscovite, and vermiculite by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. To cultivate the carbonate forming microorganisms, parts of the sediment and speleothems were placed in D-1 medium containing urea, respectively, and the growth of microorganisms was observed under the aerobic condition at room temperature. The capability of carbonate mineralization of the cultured Baekasan Acheon cave microorganisms was examined through adding 1% (v/v) of the cultured microorganisms and calcium sources, Ca-acetate or Ca-lactate, into the D-1 medium. XRD analysis showed that the microorganisms cultured in cave deposits formed calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) under all conditions, and these microbial carbonate minerals included calcite and vaterite. The morphological characteristics and chemical composition of biologically formed minerals were observed by SEM-EDS showed various crystal forms such as rhomboid, spherical, perforated surface with Ca, C, and O of major chemical components. The existence of such microorganisms in the cave can contribute the formation of carbonate minerals, and it is likely to affect the geochemical cycles of carbon and calcium in the cave.

  • Yeongdong area is located on the border zone between Precambrian Yeongnam massif and central southeastern Ogcheon metamorphic belt, in which Cretaceous Yeongdong sedimentary basin exists. Main geology in this area consists of Precambrian Sobaeksan gneiss complex, Mesozoic igneous and sedimentary rocks and Quaternary alluvial deposits. Above this, age-unknown Ogcheon Supergroup, Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and Tertiary granites also occur in small scale in the northwestern part. This study focuses on the link between the various geology and Rn concentrations in groundwater. For this, twenty wells in alluvial/weathered zone and sixty bedrock aquifer wells were used. Groundwater sampling campaigns were twice run at wet season in August 2015 and dry season in March 2016. Some wells placed in alluvial/weathered part of Precambrian metamorphic rocks and Jurassic granite terrains, as well as Cretaceous porphyry, showed elevated Rn concentrations in groundwater. However, detailed geology showed the distinct feature that these high-Rn groundwaters in metamorphic and granitic terrains are definitely related to proximity of aquifer rocks to Cretaceous porphyry in the study area. The deeper wells placed in bedrock aquifer showed that almost the whole groundwaters in biotite gneiss and schist of Sobaeksan gneiss complex and in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of Yeongdong basin have low level of Rn concentrations. On the other hand, groundwaters occurring in rock types of granitic gneiss or granite gneiss among Sobaeksan gneiss complex have relatively high Rn concentrations. And also, groundwaters occurring in the border zone between Triassic Cheongsan granites and two-mica granites, and in Jurassic granites neighboring Cretaceous porphyry have relatively high Rn concentrations. Therefore, to get probable and meaningful results for the link between Rn concentrations in groundwater and surrounding geology, quite detailed geology including small-scaled dykes or vein zones should be considered. Furthermore, it is necessary to take account of the spatial proximity of well location to igneous rocks associated with some mineralization/hydrothermal alteration zone rather than in-situ geology itself.

  • Optimal bactericidal conditions of pilot scale UV-$TiO_2$ photoreractor were studied. As the inner diameter of reactor increased. the bactedcidal efficiency decreased. Similarly bactedcidal effect was elevated according to the higher concentration of $TiO_2$. however. the effect was not repressed by the highest concentration(6.000 $mg/{\ell}$)of $TiO_2$ Bactericidal effect of muscovite bead was higher than that of glass bead. When bacterial cells were applied to the photoreacter for 1. 5. and 15 min, bactericidal effects were 62, 94.3. and 99.8%, respectively. When 30 $mg/{\ell}$ of $H_2O_2$ was added to the reaction mixture and sterilized for 5 min, the bactericidal efficiency was 99.8%.

  • Geochemistry of metasedimentary groundwaters and spar waters has been studied in comparison with that of granitic groundwaters in Korea. Metasedimentary groundwaters show $Ca^{2+]$-${HCO_3}^-$ type at depth and low sodium concentrations compared with granitic groundwaters, which is due to the lack of plagioclase in their aquifer mineralogy and, therefore, the predominant reaction of calcite dissolution. According to factor analysis, metasedimentary groundwaters at 100~300 m depth are represented by 1) the dissolution of calcite and Mg-carbonates, 2) transformation of kaolinite to illite, and 3) the presence of sodium as not the product of plagioclase dissolution but a artificial pollutant. Discriminant function between the granitic and metasedimentary groundwaters shows a good discriminating ability with 81.8%, and groundwaters of volcanic aquifer, which has abundant plagioclase, are included in the granitic group by this function. Spa water samples show the result of active water-rock interaction due to high temperature.

  • We investigated the lithology and petrography of granites and metasedimentary rocks in Deokjeok Island at the western margin of the Gyeonggi massif. The major lithology comprises the biotite granite that intrudes all other types of rocks. A minor amount of mylonitized porphyritic granite crops out along the southeastern coast. Metasedimentary rocks in the north are further divided into: (1) sheared quartzite-schist to the northeast; and (2) relatively less-deformed, low-grade metasedimentary rocks to the northwest. The former contains quartz grains showing undulatory extinction and subgrain aggregates as well as minor amount of primary chlorite and biotite in the muscovite-rich matrix. Metamorphic condition belongs to the greenschist facies or the biotite zone. On the other hand, the latter unit consists of meta-conglomerate, meta-sandstone, meta-pelite, and black slate. Regardless of the lithology, the intensity of deformation apparently increases eastward to develop the flow banding of quartz in the shear zone.

  • This study aims to improve the recovery of gold and silver by removing hematite from gold ore of an oxidation zone with ammonia solution. Quartz, hematite and muscovite were present in the oxidation zone, while hematite was hydrogenous. As a result of performing an ammonia leaching test on variables, it is found that the maximum Fe leaching parameter was $-45{\mu}m$ particle size, 1.0 M sulfuric acid concentration, 5.0 g/l ammonium sulfate concentration and 2.0 M hydrogen peroxide concentration. It is also confirmed that goethite was precipitated and formed from that ammonia elution. As the amount of Fe-removal was increased in a solid-residue, the recovery of Au and Ag were increased, too.

  • The geology of the Tumbang Lapan area consists of Permian to Carboniferous metamorphic rocks, Cretaceous granitic rocks, and Permian to Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three faults are developed in surveyed area, and are functioned as channels of the hydrothermal solution which farmed quartz veins within tuff3. In the mineralized area, argillic and propylitic alterations are dominant. Argillic altered rocks show the alteration mineral assemblages of kaolinte+sericite+quartz+chlorite+pyrite. Mineral association in propylitic alteration is chlorite+epidote+feldspar+quartz+pyrite+ magnetite. Vein type, fracture filling, stockwork are observed in survey area. As a result of analysis of samples from quartz veins and altered rocks, some mineralized rocks showed $0.01\~4.6g/t$ of gold.

  • Mica-glass ceramics has features such as micro-sized crystals, high strength, chemical resistance, semitransparent optical properties, etc. Due to its superior material properties, mica glass ceramics have increasing applications in dental and medical components, insulation boards, chemical devices, etc. In many applications, especially for dental and medical components, ultra-precise polishing is required. However, it is known to be a very difficult-to-grind material because of its high hardness and brittle properties. Thus, in this study, a newly developed ultra-precise polishing method is applied to obtain nano-level surface roughness of the mica glass ceramics using magnetorheological (MR) fluids and nano abrasives. Nano-sized ceria particles were used for the polishing of the mica glass ceramics. A series of experiments were performed under various polishing conditions, and the results were analyzed. A very fine surface roughness of Ra=6.127 nm could be obtained.

  • A general study on the upgrading of mica minerals which are mainly found in pegmatite deposits was carried out for the purpose of developing a technique for recovering mica in form of comercial grade products. By the way the grade one of about 5~6% $K_2O$ still is not developed. The target of this research work is to be establish a process for the efficient concentration of muscovite, containing more than 10% $K_2O$. The tests are applied to incraese the recovery and grade of concentrates in term of variations of conditions. The test sample consists of mainly muscovite and gangue mineral such as quartz, pyrite and chlorite. Decantation and shaking table tests were ineffective to up-grade this low grade one, but flotation method gave satisfactory result. By means of grade one, but flotation method gave satisfactory result. By means of grindability tests, an optimum result could be obtained from the sample ground to -48mesh feed size. The flotation result indicates that the dodecyl ammonium chloride used as a cationic collector is effective on the negatively charged surface, while the sodium dodecyl sulfate as an anionic collector is effective on the positively charged surface. Muscovite was floated by petroleum sulfonate as well as amine type collector, it also floated by MIBC as well as pine oil frother under well condition. Fine muscovite concentrates of about 10.68% $K_2O$ was obtained with 22.4% yield, by decantation, the muscovite concentrates of 10.10% $K_2O$ was obtained with 23.54% yield, by table concentration, the muscovite concentrates of 11.51% $K_2O$ was obtained with 23.0% yield by flotation.
