  • Purpose: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we conducted a Delphi survey that included the experts from the field of COVID-19 immunization in children aged 5-11 years. The aim was to organize collective expert opinions on COVID-19 vaccination in young children in the Republic of Korea, and so thus assist the vaccination policy. Methods: The panels included pediatric infectious disease specialists, preventive medicine experts, infectious disease physicians, and COVID-19 vaccine experts consulting the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The Delphi survey was conducted online using a questionnaire from February 14 to February 27, 2022. Results: The Delphi panels agreed that children were vulnerable to COVID-19, and the severity of illness was modest. Furthermore the panels reported that children with chronic illness were more susceptible to a worsening clinical course. There were generally positive opinions on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in children aged 5-11 years, and experts gathered a slightly positive opinion that the adverse events of pediatric COVID-19 were not numerous. The benefits of COVID-19 vaccination were evaluated at a level similar to the potential risks in children. Currently, the only approved mRNA platform vaccine in children seemed to be sustainable; however, the recombinant protein platform COVID-19 vaccines were evaluated as better options. Conclusions: Due to the surge of the Omicron variant and an increase in pediatric cases, the COVID-19 vaccination in young children may have to be considered. Panels had neutral opinions regarding the COVID-19 vaccination in children aged 5-11 years. Thus monitoring of the epidemiology and the data about the safety of COVID-19 vaccination should be continued.

  • The purpose of this study was that HPV prevention education based on the planned behavioral theory was designed to provide college students with HPV vaccine knowledge, cervical cancer knowledge, attitude toward HPV vaccination, subjective norms for HPV vaccination, perceived behavioral control for HPV vaccination, and HPV vaccination. This is an experimental study to confirm the effect on the intention to vaccinate and the behavior of HPV vaccination. The subjects were arbitrarily expressed as 32 subjects in the experimental group and 34 subjects in the control group. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, χ2-test, Fisher's exact test and repeated Measures ANOVA. As a result, the experimental group participating in HPV prevention education was compared to the control group who did not participate in HPV vaccine knowledge (t=5.66, p<.001), cervical cancer knowledge (t=4.13, p<.001), attitude (t=2.24, p=) .032 ), subjective norm (t=2.83, p=.008), perceived behavioral control (t=2.65, p=.013), and intention (t=3.91, p<.001) were significantly different. After 4 weeks of HPV prevention education intervention, there was a significant difference in the interaction between group and time course of HPV vaccination intention (F=6.95, p=.002). Therefore, it was confirmed that HPV prevention education is an educational program that can be applied to college students.

  • Herpes zoster (HZ) has been reported in immunocompetent children who received the varicella vaccine. In vaccinated children, HZ can be caused by vaccine-strain or by wild-type varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Like wild-type VZV, varicella vaccine virus can establish latency and reactivate as HZ. We report two cases of HZ in otherwise healthy 16- and 14-month-old boys who received varicella vaccine at 12 months of age. They presented with a vesicular rash on their upper extremities three to four months after varicella vaccination. In one case, a swab was obtained by abrading skin vesicles and VZV was detected in skin specimens by polymerase chain reaction. The VZV open-reading frame 62 was sequenced and single nucleotide polymorphism analysis confirmed that the virus from skin specimen was vaccine-strain. This is the first HZ case following varicella vaccination confirmed to be caused by vaccine-strain VZV in the immunocompetent children in Korea. Pediatricians should be aware of the potential for varicella vaccine virus reactivation in vaccinated young children.

  • The positive rate for serum anti-HBs was analized among 424 of HB vaccinated and 2035 of non-vaccinated cases at the Yeungnam University Hospital, Computed Automated Med-screening Center. Most of them from Kyungbook province and they had the last HB vaccination in the periods of 3 to 42months prior to this study. The followings were obtained. 1. The positive rates for serum HBsAg were 0.7% in the vaccinees, 9.6% in the non-vaccinated and 8.0% in the whole cases. 2. The positive rates for serum anti-HBs were 66.3% in the vaccinees, 47.9% in the non-vaccinated and 51.0% in the whole cases. 3. The positive rates for serum anti-HBs were 51.4% in the cases with one time of vaccination and 68.6% in the cases with two times of vaccination. on the vasis of these findings the positive rate for serum anti-HBs among the vaccinees was significantly higher than thau of non-vaccinated(P<0.05). The positive rate for seaum anti-HBs shortly after vaccination was higher than that of present our study which was made relatively long period after vaccination. As the reason a natural decrease of the titers of the serum anti-HBs can be postulated as one of the contributing factors for the discrepancy. In order to keep the serum antibody of perfect protectivity against HBV, it may be better to check the serum anti-HBs just after vaccination, follow up and take booster injection when it is needed.
