Activities using local multi-cultural resources were carried by visiting in an alien worker community, volunteering in multicultural center, attending on UNESCO ASP(Associated School Program), and making radio broadcasting program associated with 'SCN FM' which is a local broadcasting station on the weekend. And world geography lessons using the CCAP were conducted with 5 classes including orientation by inviting foreign instructors from that place after reconstructing the Southeast and South Asia unit of the countries such as Pakistan, the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia. According to twice questionnaire survey conducted before and after activities using local multi-cultural resources and world geography lessons using the CCAP, it appeared that students had familiarity more than before through direct meeting with foreigners inside and outside classroom, and understood and respected other cultures by acquiring contextual regional knowledge. In the end, multi-cultural activities and world geography lessons using the CCAP contributed to students' global citizenship, which overcame prejudice toward third world cultures. Like that, if world geography classes provide continually students with opportunities to experience directly diverse cultures inside and outside classroom, world geography overcome negative image that it transmit decontextual regional knowledge and is regarded as the subject that is very fit for nurturing global citizenship based on contextual knowledge, consideration and tolerance needed in global and multi-cultural society.

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize the importance of 'character', which is an important keyword in the era of the 4th revolution, and to approach the teaching method through the life of Haydn and his music among various methods of character education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the research hypothesis that the convergence education of music and character brings positive changes in pre-and post-recognition of sub-elements of character virtues. As a research method, character education was conducted through class activities using Haydn's life and music for a total of 6 times. The result shows the change in pre-and post-cognition of sub-elements of personality virtues, and statistically significant (p<0.01) in all virtues of character education. Activity-oriented classes through the life and music of a composer were worthy for the effective character education. A further study would be meaningful by applying various teaching activities if the scope of study is expanded.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an assessment tool to evaluate student character competence in applying a Collaborative Problem-Solving Instruction Model in science education. Through the literature analysis, nine elements of character are extracted. They are: openness, empathy, tolerance, caring, integrity, self-regulation, honesty, responsibility, and cooperation. Based on these existing measures of character competence, experts discussed and developed items for evaluation of a student's character competence based on the Collaborative Problem-Solving Instruction Model. The first 88 preliminary items were investigated, corrected, and supplemented based on the results of the first survey. A second validity survey was conducted on 71 middle- and high school science teachers to determine the content validity of the items. Inter-rater reliability was calculated for the assessors to verify the reliability of the items. Overall, the inter-rater reliability and content validity of the assessment items are good with 53 items ultimately being selected based on the analysis results. The assessment tool developed in this study could be used to explore changes in student character competence through a Collaborative Problem-Solving Instruction Model, as well as to evaluate student character competence in science education.

  • Recently it has been claimed that character education should be applied not only in ethics but also in other disciplines including science education. With several attempts at character education in previous research on science education, the examination of its requisite and components is needed. This research investigates the necessity and elements of character education to be improved upon in science classes through questionnaires and focus interviews of experts in the field of science education such as secondary school teachers, professors, and researchers. They recognize that character education should be adopted in science education with three backgrounds: scientist activities, the field of secondary school, and inquiry education. Based on moral education and citizenship, elements of character education in science class are comprised of four essential character elements including honesty, sympathy, tolerance, and self-esteem, and seven practical character elements that are divided into personal qualities: sincerity, responsibility, and self-control and social qualities: consideration, openness, communication, and cooperation. Their validity and importance are accepted by experts.
