  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of high strength R/C interior beam-column joints regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar. Five specimens of retrofitted the beam-column joint regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar were constructed and tested for their retrofitring performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the interior beam-column joint regions (IJIR series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity. Specimens of IJIR series, designed by the retrofitting of advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 114.2~123.5% and its energy dissipation capacity by 1.55~1.85 times in comparison with the standard specimen of SIJC with a displacement ductility of 5.

  • It is expected that recent development of the mechanical model will replace previous empirical methods of detailing. In this study, a mechanical model is proposed to analyze the behavior of the anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members. Main characteristics of the proposed model lies on its rational consideration of material properties, and concrete strength in biaxial stress state and that of local zone reinforced by spirals. Shear friction strength of concrete surrounding spirals are also considered. The results of' the proposed method as well as the known Strut-and-Tie method and nonlinear finite element analysis are compared with some typical experimental results. We get good agreement to the failure mode as well as the failure load from test results. And it can be shown that three dimentional failure mechanism, which cannot be expected by the method based on 2D analysis, can be explained by proposed model.

  • In exterior beam-column joints, hooked bars are used for anchorage, but usage of high-strength and large-diameter bars increases, headed bar is preferred for solving steel congestion and difficulty in construction. To investigate the structural performance of headed bars, Six exterior beam-column joints were tested under cyclic loading. Tests parameter were the anchorage methods and concrete strength. The test results indicate that behavior of headed bar specimens shows similar performance with hooked bar specimens. All specimens failed by flexural failure of the beam. Headed bar specimens shows better performance in anchorage and joint shear. All specimens were satisfied the criteria of ACI374.1-05. Test results indicate that use of headed bar in exterior beam column joint is available.

  • Rebar work is a labor intensive operation, and with labor shortage and high-wage era, the cost is rising, so re-bar manufacturing system in plant is adapted. However there remains a lot of problems. Although manufacturing system in plant, which greatly effects the building's safety, endurance, and construction time, is an important phase in construction, it holds serious problem of quality and productivity deterioration due to its characteristic of intensive-labor and maintaining of old work methods resulting in poor management, and costs increase. Therefor in this study to investigate current situation and problems of rebar work in plant and to find methods of betterment, a survey was conducted to factory engineers in 18 companies.

  • It has been shown that many Reinforced Concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations into the performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loading were presented. The CFRP has been applied by choosing different combinations and locations to determine the effective way to improve structural performances of joints. Eight beam-column joints were tested to investigate behaviors of each specimen under cyclic load and to compare performances of seismic retrofit. According to the experimental study, the retrofit strengthened with the CFRP provides significant improvements of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column joints originally built without seismic details.

  • The reinforcing steel process is composed of the development of placing drawing, cutting and bending, and the placement and fabrication of the reinforcement, and is participated in by reinforcement detailer, the fabricator and placer. Because the reinforcing steel process-from estimating and rebar detailing, to production, material tracking, billing, and general accounting-is conducted by many participant, reinforcement details based on building code and reinforcing bar detailing standards are essential. The process, however, holds some problems. Building code has been revised recently, and the utilization of placing drawings was proved to be low, and the reinforcement estimating in early stage of the process is below what is required for placement. Therefore, in this study, a survey was conducted to the reinforcement detailer, the fabricator and placer of domestic construction industry. According to the analysis of the survey, the reinforcement details on site was not standardized. The improvement in reinforcing steel detailing standards was sought by analyzing the results of the survey including reinforcement constructability.

  • The post-tensioned anchorage zones of normal concrete have larger cross sections because of congested reinforcements to resist high bearing and bursting stresses. The high compressive and tensile strength of newly developed UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) may reduce the cross sectional dimensions and simplify the reinforcement details, if used for post-tensioned members. The Finite Element Analysis was performed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of post-tensioned anchorage zones using UHPC without anchorage plates and confining reinforcements. The results show that the maximum bursting stresses are less than the values given in current design code without failure due to vertical cracks. The location of maximum bursting stresses were at 0.2 times of width of the models. The bursting force from FEA is less than that is obtained using simplified formular in Korean Bridge Design Code.

  • In this dissertation, experimental research was carried out to study the hysteretic behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete beam-column joints designed by high performance techniques, such as application of high-strength concrete, reducing of joint regions damage, moving of beam plastic hinge, advanced reinforcing detailings and High Ductile Fiber-Reinforced Mortar.(HDFRM) Specimens(HJCI), designed by the development of earthquake-resistant performance, moving of beam plastic hinge, and new design approach, were attained the moving of beam plastic hinge and developed significantly earthquake-resistant performance of such joints. Specimens(HJRP), designed with HDFRM, were indicated more stable hysteresis behavior, high load carrying capacity, and distributed crack pattern of specimens HJRP when compared to the control specimen.

  • The seismic behavior of the lightly reinforced concrete frames (LRCFs) was controlled by the nonductile behavior of the critical regions. These critical regions require retrofit to improve the seismic behavior of the lightly reinforced concrete frames. Critical column end regions must be retrofit to increase the global ductility capacity. The objective of this research is to evaluate structural strengthening performance of lightly reinforced concrete frame with Strain hardening cement composite(SHCC) experimentally. The experimental investigation consisted of a cyclic load tests on 1/3-scale models of precast infill walls. Reinforcement detail of infill wall was variables in the experiment. The experimental results, as expected, show that the multiple crack pattern, strength, ductility and energy dissipation capacity are superior for specimen with SHCC infill wall due to bridging of fibers and stress redistribution in cement matrix.
