  • Harmful factors such as shock waves and fragments are generated at domestic ammunition testing sites and military shell shooting training sites due to frequent shooting and explosion tests. As a result, complaints from local residents are rapidly increasing, and there is a high risk of damage to facilities and human life. The recently constructed ammunition test site built a test facility for firing artillery and rocket propulsion in a narrow area with a radius of 300 m due to site restrictions, but damage to the facility is accumulating because there is no adequate protective structure. Therefore, in this study, quantitative data on harmful factors such as noise, vibration, shock wave, and thermal effect generated between artillery firing and rocket propulsion tests were measured, and explosion pressure characteristics were analyzed to design a protective structure, and use Autodyn to protect performance. to perform verification.

  • The ship collision analysis of steel pile group as protection system of bridge in navigable waterways was performed to analyze the structural characteristics of protective structure during ship collision. The analysis encompassed finite element modeling of ship and pile, modeling of material non-linearity, hard impact analysis, displacement-based analysis and soft impact analysis for collision scenarios. Through the analysis of hard impact with a rigid wall, impact load for each collision type of ship bow was estimated. In the displacement-based analysis the estimate of energy which protection system can absorb within its maximum horizontal clearance so as to secure bridge pier from vessel contact during collision was performed. Soft impact analysis for various collision scenarios was conducted and the collision behaviors of vessel and pile-supported protection system were reviewed for the design of protection system. The understanding of the energy dissipation mechanism of pile supported structure and colliding vessel would give us the optimized design of protective structure.

  • This study suggested that protective panels should be installed as sacrificial members as a safety design method for structures with potential explosions such as hydrogen charging stations to minimize direct damage to the structure and have resilience. To this end, the focus of the experiment is on quantitatively evaluating the impact of the structure when the protection panel is installed closely or spaced apart from the structure in a high-speed collision situation of the projectile. The experimental design used steel plates instead of concrete structural members mainly used in the past for excellent reproducibility, and the impact of structural members was compared and analyzed through deformation differences on the back of the steel plate. In addition, the impact of changes in the physical properties of the elastic body used as a separation material for the protective member and the difference in shock wave transmission time according to the protective member and the elastic body on the structural member was investigated.

  • Owing to the recent increase in the frequency of explosion accidents, blast resistive design has garnered attention to reduce the damage of important structural elements. However, domestic research on the blast resistive structures is still insufficient, and domestic design guideline against blast loads are not documented yet. In this study, a numerical study on the RC blast resistive walls, where the test variable was the presence of FRP sheet, was performed using LS-DYNA program. Based on the numerical results, displacement-time hysteretic curve, pressure-impulse diagram, and fragility curve of the test specimens were derived. It was shown that the FRP sheet strengthening method is efficient to improve the blast resistive performance of the RC wall. Also, the strengthening effect of FRP sheet on the RC wall was stronger when the magnitude of the blast load was greater.

  • To evaluate the performance of safety apparatus without the full scale crash test, the computer simulation is inevitable. But, to improve the accuracy of computer simulation, it is important to reasonably determine the input parameters in which the interaction of vehicle-guardrail-soil should be accounted for. This study is focused on how to enhance the reliance of the dynamic performance of guardrail obtained by computer simulation. Analyses were done on the sensitivity of output variables to the change of input parameters by using BARRIER VII of which the usefulness was proved on the barrier-vehicle impact analysis. Through the analyses important input parameters, which give sensitive effects to output of computer simulation, are found out, and methods to determine such parameters are suggested to improve the accuracy of simulation.

  • Explosion after penetration of a warhead in an underground structure generally causes considerable displacement, breakage and extensive damage to the target. Therefore, in order to reduce the damage effect, it is required to design an underground structure protection against penetration. In this study, major factors for improvement of penetration protection performance of reinforced concrete underground structures using applied element method are divided into strength (concrete UCS) and density (concrete thickness, reinforcement layers, reinforcement diameters, reinforcement spacings). Based on these major factors, this study performed numerical analysis of simulation of dynamic response by penetrators under various conditions and analyzed the results. The results of this study are expected to be used as basis materials to improve penetration protection performance of reinforced concrete underground structures.

  • The importance of public infrastructures' protection against crash or blast loads has been emerging issue as structures are becoming bigger and population densities in downtown cities are growing up. However, there exists no sufficient study which considers the developments of protective building materials, that are essential for protective design and construction. To assess the protection performance and the applicability as protective materials of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC), this study performed the impact tests with 40 mm gas-gun propelled projectile crash machine. From this study, it has observed that both high compressive strength of cement matrix and fiber reinforcement are beneficial for the improvement of impact resistance.

  • An importance of infrastructures' protection against crash or blast loading has been an emerging issue as structures are becoming much bigger and population densities in downtown are growing up. However, there exists no such a standard to evaluate the protection performance of construction material itself. Prior to building standards for protection assessment techniques, this study performed gas-gun propelled projectile impact tests with series of contact-type monitoring systems to investigate the applicability of each sensing type. Through the impact tests, failure modes and protection performances of both normal concrete and UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) reinforced by steel fibers were also evaluated. The results showed that LVDT could be applicable for the impact test among contact-type sensors and UHPC with fibers had a remarkable potential to improve protection against impact loading.
