Although many researchers have studied the efficacy of paclitaxel (PTX) on many cells during the last two decades, little work has been reported on the importance of release kinetics inhibiting cell proliferation. The aim of this study is to examine the release behavior of the PTX on various biodegradable polymers such as poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA), poly-L-lactide (PLLA), and polycaprolactone (PCL) for drug-eluting stents (DES). The PTX from the fabricated films was released for 8 weeks and the degree of degradation of the films was observed by FE-SEM. Although the degradation time of PCL was the slowest, the PTX release rate was the fastest among them and followed by PLGA and PLLA with the equivalent PTX concentration. It suggests that hydrophobic drug such as PTX from polymer with low $T_g$ like PCL could be moved easily and released rapidly in body temperature.

In this study, effects of substrates and nitrate on biological phosphorus release in EBPR(enhanced biological phosphorus removal) process were examined using batch test apparatus at anaerobic conditions. The sludge used in this experiments was taken from SBR(sequencing batch reactor) treating swine wastewater at aeration period. Phosphorus release rates obtained with substrates of FSW(fermented swine wastewater), acetate, propionate, domestic wastewater and methanol were 6.19, 5.99, 1.52, 1.2 and $1.03mgP/gVSS{\cdot}hr$, respectively. Those observed with acetate and FSW were 4~5 times greater than those with propionate, methanol and domestic wastewater. Therefore phosphorus release rates were significantly affected by type of substrate added at anaerobic condition. Phosphorus release was greatly affected by concentration of nitrate in anoxic condition. Comparing to acetate, propionate and FSW, phosphorus release was observed after almost completely depletion of nitrate concentration with methanol and domestic wastewater added as substrate. In the cases supplied with acetate, propionate and FSW, phosphorus release rates were less influenced by a nitrate concentration than those with methanol and domestic wastewater.
Hydroxypropylmethylcelluloses (HPMC) are cellulose ethers which may be used as the basis for hydrophilic matrices for controlled release oral delivery and offer the advantages of being non-toxic and relatively inexpensive. In this work, we designed new drug release system using HPMC as matrix, manufactured by direct compression technology and have investigated the effects of the controlling factors on drug release from a swellable hydrophillic delivery system. It was found that the release rate of the drug decreased with increasing the polymer molecular weight and the polymer content in tablets, and was independent of compaction pressure and pH of dissolution fluids. Especially, the ability of the anionic surfactant, sodium laurylsulfate, to retard the release of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride from HPMC was characterised. With increasing the concentration of the sodium laurylsulfate within the matrix, drug release rate decreased. It is believed that, provided the pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and the sodium laurylsulfate are oppositely charged, they will bind together in situ within the HPMC matrix, leading to reduced drug release rates.

Unsaturated poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (UPHA) was biosynthesized and the properties of drug delivery using the polymer matrix were investigated. The biosynthesis of UPHA was carried out by pH-stat fed batch fermentation of Pseudomonas oleovorans (ATCC 29347) grown solely with 10-undecenoic acid as a carbon source. The physical and chemical properties of the biosynethesized UPHA were characterized using NMR, FT-IR, GPC and DSC. The drug release experiments were carried out using HPLC with a diffusion cell fur the release amount of ketoprofen as model drug. The effects of crosslinking degree, patch thickness, and enhancer on the drug release were studied. The drug release rate was linearly decreased and consistent with increased crosslinking degree of the polymer matrix. The duration of drug release was enhanced by the Increased patch thickness. The drug release rate was increased with increased amount of propylene gylcol as an enhancer.

The release of steroids such as progesterone, testosterone, estrone and estradiol were investigated in two types of block copolymer matrices, which were AB type block copolymer composed of poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)[PBLG] as the A segment and polyoxypropylene[POP] as the B segment and ABA type triblock copolymer composed of the A segment and poly(propylene glycol)[PPG] as the B segment. The release rates of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone through PBLG-POP1 and PBLG-POP2 matrices and those of progesterone, estrone and testosterone through GPG1 of ABA type triblock copolymer were higher in an acidic solution than in a basic one. However, the release rate of estrone through PBLG-POP1 and PBLG-POP2 matrices and that of estradiol through GPG1 of ABA type triblock copolymer were higher in a basic and neutral solutions than in an acidic one. The order of release rate in three different matrices was GPG1 > PBLG-POP1 > PBLG-POP2. The results also showed that the molecular weight of steroids is inversely proportional to the rate of release.

Biodegradable poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone)(PCL) microcapsules containing pseudomonas were prepared by W/O/W emulsion system. The characteristics and release behaviors of the microcapsules were investigated as a function of manufacturing conditions. The morphology and particle distribution of the microcapsules were observed by a scanning electron microscope and a particle size analyzer. The release behaviors of the pseudomonas were determined using a cell culture method. It was found that smooth and spherical microcapsules were formed by W/O/W emulsion system and particle size was in the range of 10 to 60 ${\mu}m$. The release behaviors of the pseudomonas were influenced by the manufacturing conditions. It was indicated that the increase of the surfactant content and stirring rate led to an increased release rate, resulting from the high specific surface area of the smaller particle size, and the increase of the PCL content provided the sustained release behaviors by the delay effect of diffusion in the release medium.
The mass loss rate and heat release rate of EPS sandwich panel cores were analysed using variable external irradiation level. The experimental materials were exposed to incident heat fluxes form 20 to 50 kW/$m^2$. For the measurement of mass loss rate and heat release rate, the size of specimen was $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}50mm$ and the samples were 3 different kinds. The combustion heat were carried out from the Oxygen bomb calorimeter and the mass loss rate and heat release rate were carried out from the Mass loss calorimeter according to ISO 5660-1. As the results of this study, the mass loss rate of Type A, B, and C were 2.7 g/$m^2s$, 2.8 g/$m^2s$, and 2.3 g/$m^2s$ and the heat release rate of Type A, B, and C were 58.23 kW/$m^2$, 47.19 kW/$m^2$, and 50.06 kW/$m^2$ respectively at the heat flux of 50 kW/$m^2$. In conclusion, when the heat release characteristics applied to a classification system of Canada, Type A and C can be classified grade C-3, and Type C can be classified grade C-2 from all data of this study.
