  • This study was undertaken to estimate the exposed dose of the medical personnel during the intracoronary radiotherapy procedure as a part of ongoing SPARE (Seoul National University Hospital Post-Angioplasty Rhenium) trial. Data of thirty-four patients among forty-two irradiated patients participating in this trial due to coronary artery stenosis were retrospectively analyzed. Intracoronary radiotherapy was delivered to the patient immediately after angioplasty ballooning. Prescribed dose was 17 Gy to media of the diseased artery and was delivered with $^{188}Re$ filled balloon catheter. Dosimetry was carried out with GM counter at eight different points. Ten centimeter and forty centimeter from the patient's heart were selected to represent maximum and whole-body exposed dose of the operator, respectively. Median delivered dose was 111.6 mCi with average treatment time of 576 seconds. Average exposed dose rate at 10 cm and 40 cm from the patient's heart were 0.43 mSv/hr and 0.30 mSv/hr, respectively. Average exposed doses per treatment were 0.07 mSv and 0.05 mSv for 10 cm and 40 cm from the patient's heart, respectively. Exposed doses measured are much lower than recommended limit of 50 mSv for radiation workers or 1 mSv for general population in ICRP-60. This study proves that current method of intracoronary radiotherapy incorporated in this trial is very safe regarding radiation protection.

  • From Jan 2002 to June 2011, we evaluated 4419 cases of radiation dose of 323 radiation related individuals consist of physician, nurses, technician and others in local C national university hospital. On annual analysis, year 2003 ranked the highest and 2007 the lowest dose. Dose was relatively higher in male than female. Dose was highest in 30s on age basis analysis. Dose was high in order of physician, nurse, and technician. Average radiation dose was high in order of cardiovascular center, radiologic intervention ceter, radiologist individuals, and fluoroscopic contrast study room. Those doses did not excess the standard dose recommended by ICRP (20mSv/year). However unlike average dose, there are wide variations of dose in individuals. Therefore radiation related workers should do one's best in personal radiation exposure dose management for achievement of minimum dose of radiation.

  • Upper gastrointestinal series is an examination that uses X-rays. It is important to defend against exposure to radiation during upper gastrointestinal examination because the organs, such as thyroid gland, lens, breasts, and gonads, with relatively high biological sensitivity to radiation are distributed on the examination area. We have made a whole body phantom that can change the depth of organs. radiation dose of eye, thyroid gland, breast and gonads were measured by the same procedure as the actual upper gastrointestinal examination. When performed only fluoroscopy the mean dose reduction of lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was 62.2%. The mean dose reduction of lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was 59.0% when both fluoroscopy and spot shoot were performed. Therefore, when performed upper gastrointestinal examination it was confirmed that shielding of the lens, thyroid gland, breast and gonads was effective in decreasing the exposure dose. The manufactured human phantom can be used in measuring radiation dose for deep organ because it can adjust the height corresponding to the organs located in the human body.

  • In this study, we analyzed the effects of radiation exposure, as compared to the hematological parameters change of medical radiation workers and the public. The mean value of all hematological parameters were in the normal range. Eosin mean value of the radiation workers($2.52{\pm}1.79%$) showed that a significantly lower than the control group($2.92{\pm}1.39%$). In the comparison of the results depending on the occupation period, it showed high value that the mean of the radiation workers group WBC, platelet, Lymph, Mono, Baso. Over 20 years of radiation workers WBC, Mono showed low values and less than 10 years of radiation workers mean value of Baso showed low values, there was no statistical significance. In the comparison of the results depending on the 4 years cumulative radiation dose, Over 5.0 mSv of Radiation works RBC($4.61{\pm}0.53$ vs $4.91{\pm}0.38$), Hct($41.51{\pm}4.07$ vs $43.97{\pm}3.40$), Eosin($1.74{\pm}1.14$ vs $2.92{\pm}1.39$) showed low value, it was statistical significance. 0.5~1.0 mSv radiation exposure workers Hb ($13.93{\pm}1.75$) showed a significantly lower value than that of the control group ($14.90{\pm}1.29$).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the radiation protection, awareness, and attitude of radiological technologists in the mammography room due to the low energy use of breast imaging. Data collection was performed by 222 independent radiological technologists in the breast and breast clinic of six hospitals except Jeju Island. The independent sample t-test and oneway variance analysis were performed. As a result, it was found that the lower the number of men(p<0.05), the age of 30s(p<0.05), the marriage(p<0.05), the work experience of more than 10 years(p<0.05), the working hours of 8 hours(p<0.01), the less the impact of radiation(p<0.01), the more important it was to radiation defense. appear. This is thought to be influenced by the work specificity and work environment of the mammography room, and it will be used as a basic data to raise awareness and act on the exposure through analysis with other factors.

  • Radiation exposures of an astronaut during the space travels to the International Space Station(ISS) of the Soyuz and the Moon of the Apollo, were calculated considering the altitude, boarding time, period of stay, kinds of spaceships and space suits. The calculated radiation exposures decrease dramatically according to the thickness of the shielding by the wall of the spaceships and by the space suits. For the space travel to the ISS of Soyuz at Low Earth orbit, the thickness of the spaceship required to optimally reduce the radiation exposure is 3 cm. For the Extravehicle Mobility Unit(EMU) the exposures are minimized at 4 cm of the aluminized Mylar and 5 cm of the Demron, respectively. The aluminized Mylar showed better radiation shielding than the Demron which contains the high Z materials. The radiation exposures of an astronaut were $4.2\times10^{-6}$ Sv for the ISS travel and $4.3\times10^{-5}$ Sv for the Moon explore. The high concentration of the high energy proton flux at the surface of the Moon results in high radiation exposure. The calculation scheme and results of this study can be used in the design of the shielding performance of a spaceship and space suits.

  • X-ray examinations represent the largest man-made source of radiation exposure for the population. The need for standardization of radiation exposures has been suggested and the guidance levels for various radiographic and radioisotope examinations has been proposed by the International Atomic Energy Aency(IAEA) as a safety standard. In many countries, the situation of medical radiographic exposures in each country should be researched before the appropriate guidance level is established. In this study, measurements of entrance surface dose, dose-area product(DAP), computed tomograghic dose index(CTDI) and mean glandular dose(MGD) were carried out in patients who underwent routine x-ray examinations, fluoroscopy, computed tomograghy and mamography in Korea. These measured quantities were compared with the results from the calculation method in previous study. And we suggested diagnostic reference levels in medical imaging in Korea.
