  • Purpose Yttrium-90 (Y-90) is high-energy beta emitters ($E{\beta}$, max = 2.28 MeV) with the mean penetration depth of 2.5 mm in tissue. Radioactive microspheres containing Y-90 is widely used for the transarterial radioembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, bremsstrahlung radiation from Y-90 can cause the external radiation exposure to medical staff who handle the Y-90 microspheres. In this study, shielding device for Y-90 microspheres was developed to minimize the external radiation exposure. Materials and Methods Y-90 microsphere shielding device was made from 6 mm thicknesses of tungsten including the lead glass window. Radiation shielding ability of Y-90 microsphere shielding device was evaluated using 4 GBq of $SIR-Spheres^{(R)}$ Y-90 microspheres. The bremsstrahlung radiation was measured using radiation survey meter. Results The mean radiation dose of Y-90 microspheres in acrylic shield was $261.7{\pm}2.3{\mu}Sv/h$ (n=5) at 10 cm away from the shield. With the additional tungsten shielding device, it was $23.7{\pm}1.3{\mu}Sv/h$ (n=5). Thus, the bremsstrahlung radiation dose was decreased by 90.9%. At 50 cm away from the shield, bremsstrahlung radiation was reduced by 89.2% after using tungsten shielding device. Conclusion During the preparation and radioembolization of Y-90 microsphere, medical staff are exposed to external radiation. In this study, we demonstrated that the use of tungsten shielding device devices significantly reduced the amount of bremsstrahlung radiation. Y-90 microsphere tungsten shielding device can be highly effective in reducing the bremsstrahlung radiation.

  • Sitting position upper extremity X-ray examinations (SUEX) is the most widely used patient positioning method for upper extremity X-ray examinations. For this method, the radiation dose is considerable for relatively less interesting organs. We investigated whether patients need to wear the apron during the examination or not. We also studied the examination methods which can reduce the radiation dose. The results showed that radiation dose was reduced as the distance of source to patient becomes longer and the thickness of object grows higher.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the dose of the space to the controller located within the mammography room conducted a research on ways to the reduction exposure to the radiation workers. Results, the dose of 6.18 mGy/year was measured when there is no difference in the hilar area of the controller position, the dose of 2.35E-11 mGy/year was measured when installing the Shielding door. In addition, when the direction of the X-ray tube anode be heading this direction controller, low average level measured was 0.30 mGy/year. Based on this study, the mammography should be considered when installing the anode and cathod directions. And, by installing the shielding door, it must be able to completely separate shooting space and control room. This is the best way radiation protection method in radiation workers.

  • The diagnostic multileaf collimator(MLC) was designed for patient dose reduction in diagnostic radiography We used monte carlo simulation code (MCNPX, LANL, USA) to evaluate efficiency of shielding material for making diagnostic MLC as preliminary study. The diagnostic radiography unit was designed using SRS-78 program according to tube voltage (80,100,120 kVp) and acquired energy spectrums. The shielding material was SKD11 alloy tool steel that is composed of 1.6% carbon(C), 0.4% silicon(Si), 0.6% manganese (Mn), 5% chromium (Cr), 1% molybdenum(Mo) and vanadium(V). The density of it was $7.89g/cm^3$.Using tally card 6, we calculated the shielding efficiency of MLC according to tube voltage. The results was that 98.3% (80 kVp), 95.7 %(100 kVp), 93.6% (120 kVp). We certified efficiency of diagnostic MLC fabricated from SKD11 alloy steel by monte calro simulation. Based on the results, we designed the diagnostic MLC and will develop the diagnostic MLC for reduction of patient dose in diagnostic radiography.

  • This study compares and analyzes the performance of a shield manufactured using 3D printing technology to find out its applicability as a shield in high-energy electron beam therapy. Actual measurement and monte carlo simulations were performed to evaluate the shielding performance of 3D printing materials for high-energy electron beams. First, in order to secure reliability for the simulation, a source term evaluation was conducted by referring to the IAEA's TRS-398 recommendation. Second, to analyze the shielding performance of PLA+W (93%), a specimen was manufactured using a 3D printer, and the shielding rate by thickness according to electron beam energy was evaluated. Third, the shielding thickness required for electron beam treatment was calculated through a comparative analysis of shielding performance between PLA+W (93%) and existing shielding bodies. First, as a result of the evaluation of the source term through actual measurement and simulation, the TRS-398 recommendation was satisfied with an error of less than 1%, thereby securing the reliability of the simulation. Second, as a result of the shielding performance analysis for PLA+W (93%), 6 MeV electron beams showed a shielding rate of more than 95% at 3.12 mm, and 15 MeV electron beams showed a shielding rate of more than 90% at 10 mm thickness. Third, through simulations, comparative analysis between PLA+W (93%) materials and existing shields showed high shielding rates within the same thickness in the order of tungsten, lead, copper, PLA+W (93%), and aluminum. 6 MeV electron beams showed almost similar shielding rates at 5 mm or more and 15 MeV electron beams. Through this study in the future, it is judged that it can be used as basic data for the production and application of shielding bodies using PLA+W (93%) materials in high-energy electron beam treatment.

  • Concrete is considered to be one of the excellent and versatile shielding material and is widely used for the radiation shielding material. Specially, heavyweight(or high density) concrete is used in counter weights of bascule and lift bridges, but it is generally used in radiation shielding structures and differ from normal weight concrete by having a higher density and special compositions to improve its attenuation properties. Thorough examination and evaluation of heavyweight aggregate sources are necessary to obtain material suitable for the type of shielding required. Therefore, this paper aims to study mechanical properties of heavyweight concrete by using normal cement, natural and heavyweight aggregate.

  • High-energy proton accelerators continue to be increasingly used in medical, research and industrial settings. However, due to the high energy of protons, a large number of secondary radiation occurs. Among them, neutrons are accompanied by difficulties of shielding due to various energy distribution and permeability. So In this study, we propose a shielding method that can shield neutrons most efficiently by using multiple-shielding material used as a decelerating agent or absorbent as well as a single concrete shielding. The flux of secondary neutrons showed a greater decrease in the flux rate when heavy concrete was used than in the case of ordinary concrete, and the maximum flux reduction was observed at the front position when using multiple shields. Multiple shielding can increase shielding efficiency more than single shielding however, As the thickness of the multiple shielding materials increased, the decline in flux was saturated. The mixture material showed higher shielding results than the polyethylene when using boron carbonate.

  • DOT4.2-QAD-CG coupling method was used to analyze the dose rates outside the side and the bottom shield system of CANDU 6 plant. The average dose rates at the main airlock and the new fuel loading area are approximately 6 $\mu$Sv/h as it is required. The calculated dose rates have a good agreement with the measurements at the operating CANDU 6 plant. The method used in this paper can be applied to the radiation shielding analysis of Wolsong 2, 3, and 4 CANDU 6 type plants which will be constructed in the near future.

  • This study is a neutron activation for concrete that shields medical linear accelerator facilities. Comparison of general concrete and low activation concrete. The simulation method was simulated using MCNPX (Ver. 2.5.0) and FISPACT-2010, and the shielding ability for photon and neutron beams was calculated and neutron activation evaluation was carried out. As a result, the shielding capacity was 20 ~ 50 cm efficient in general concrete, and activate evaluation in low activation concrete was calculated to be low in radioactivity concrete, but all were estimated to not exceed their own allowable concentration in self - disposal. As a result of the comprehensive analysis, it is considered effective to use ordinary concrete.
