Due to the development of advanced technology, a lot of digital radiographic equipment has been developed, which is very helpful for accurate diagnosis and treatment, and it is very important to train personnel who have acquired professional knowledge in order to use it safely and effectively. Students are exposed to the risk of radiation exposure in radiography training using diagnostic X-ray equipment, and some educational institutions do not use X-ray equipment due to management difficulties in accordance with the Nuclear Safety Act. As a solution to this, this study developed a medical radiation simulator for education that does not generate radiation by using a vision sensor and self-developed software. Through this, educational institutions can reduce the burden of administrative implementation according to the law, and students can obtain a high level of educational effects in a healthy practice environment without radiation exposure.
Bone changes are common sequela of irradiation in growing animal. The purpose of this study was to establish an experimental model of radiation-induced bone loss in growing mice using micro-computed tomography (${\mu}CT$). The extent of changes following 2 Gy gamma irradiation ($2Gy{\cdot}min^{-1}$) was studied at 4, 8 or 12 weeks after exposure. Mice that received 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 Gy of gamma-rays were examined 8 weeks after irradiation. Tibiae were analyzed using ${\mu}CT$. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and biomechanical properties were measured and the osteoclast surface was examined. A significant loss of trabecular bone in tibiae was evident 8 weeks after exposure. Measurements performed after irradiation showed a dose-related decrease in trabecular bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD), respectively. The best-fitting dose-response curves were linear-quadratic. Taking the controls into accounts, the lines of best fit were as follows: BV/TV (%) = $0.9584D^2-6.0168D+20.377$ ($r^2$ = 0.946, D = dose in Gy) and BMD ($mg{\cdot}cm^{-3}$) = $8.8115D^2-56.197D+194.41$ ($r^2$ = 0.999, D = dose in Gy). Body weight did not differ among the groups. No dose-dependent differences were apparent among the groups with regard to mechanical and anatomical properties of tibia, serum ALP and osteoclast activity. The findings provide the basis required for better understanding of the results that will be obtained in any further studies of radiation-induced bone responses.
The purpose of this study was to investigate kindergarten teachers' perception and needs about radiation understanding education for young children's safety due to radiation exposure. This study analysed the 160 questionnaire forms out of 300 kindergarten teachers in the region of C and G city. The findings of this study were as follows: First, kindergarten teachers' understanding level about radiation was low, general harmfulness and the harmfulness of exposure to radiation is high. Second, kindergarten teachers' radiation understanding education was low, but kindergarten teachers' needs about radiation understanding education was high. In conclusion, this study suggested that kindergarten teacher education are required to improve the radiation understanding level of kindergarten teachers.
Currently, the brain CT scan of the latest equipment lacks the study of parameter change and dose change and especially of noise, uniformity analysis and dose change. Therefore, this study attempted to study the phenomenon that occurs at this time by analyzing tube voltage, slice thickness, and pitch change in exposure parameters when using high specification CT. Experimental results show that uniformity is better when using high voltage, thick slice thickness selection, and minimum pitch. As a result of the combination, the most uniformity condition was 140 kVp, 10 mm and pitch 0.5. Noise was found to be improved regardless of pitch by increasing tube voltage and slice thickness. The radiation dose increased linearly with tube voltage and pitch. Therefore, the results of this study will serve as a reference for the use of High specification brain CT.
The purpose of this study was to reduce dose while maintaining image quality during digital radiographic examination of paranasal sinus by using the automatic exposure control (AEC) system. The tube voltage was set as six stages that increased by about 10 kVp to 70 kVp, 81 kVp, 90 kVp, 102 kVp, 109 kVp and 117 kVp. And then the AEC system conditions were consisted of 9 setting environments, that change mode of the sensitivity (S200, S400, S800) and the density (+2.5, 0, -2.5). We measured automatically exposed tube current (mAs) under 54 conditions with combined these, and assessed SNR and PSNR through the acquired images. In addition, four radiologists performed a qualitative assessment of the acquired images for each combination on a five-point scale of the Likert. As a result, the lowest dose and the highest values of SNR and PSNR in images with a qualitative assessment more than 4 point were the AEC control factors of 90 kVp, S800, D2.5. We applied this condition to the clinical trial, it showed an effect of 83.1% reduction in exposure radiation dose (mR). Therefore, AEC system could be used as dose reduction technology if it understood and used related regulatory factors and physical characteristics.
Fine dust threatens human health in various forms, depending on the particle size, such as by causing respiratory, cardiovascular, and brain diseases, after entering the body via the lungs. The aim of this study was to correlate fine dust exposure with changes in brain blood flow in Sprague Dawley rats by using micro-positron emission tomography and elucidate the possibility of developing cerebrovascular diseases caused by fine dust. The subjects were exposured to an average fine dust (particulate matter 2.5) of 206.2 ± 7.74 to ten rats four times a day, twice a day for 90 min. Before the experiment, they were maintained at NPO to the maximize the intake of 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose(18F-FDG) and minimize changes in the 18F-FDG biomass depending on the ambient environment and body temperature of the rats. PET images were acquired in the list mode 40 min after injecting 18F-FDG 44.4 MBq into the rats tail vein using a micro-PET scanner pre and post exposure to fine dust. We found that the whole brain level of 18F-FDG standardized uptake value in rats averaged 5.21 ± 0.52 g/mL pre and 4.22 ± 0.48 g/mL post exposure to fine dust, resulting in a statistically significant difference. Fine dust was able to alter brain activity after entering the body via the lungs in various forms depending on the particle size.
Radiation exposure of the personnel in the neutron therapy facility of KCCH cyclotron neutron system is discussed. In neutron therapy room, medical personnel is exposed to photons of the remanent induced radioactivity from the isocentric gantry in which targets and collimators are mounted. The radiation level of the neutron therapy room of KCCH cyclotron was acceptable and it decreased immediately after beam off. Personal exposure measured by individual monitor was far less than permissible level.

Purpose: In this study, it was investigated whether commercially produced beer is able to prevent a lymphocyte from radiation induced apoptosis. Materials and Methods: Whole blood samples were acquired from 5 healthy volunteers (male, 26$\sim$38 years old) and the lymphocyte were isolated by density gradient centrifugation. Radiation induced apoptosis of the lymphocyte were investigated by 0.5 Gy, 1.0 Gy, 2.0 Gy, 3.0 Gy to 5.0 Gy irradiation. In some experiments, the donor drunk beer and then blood samples were collected. In other experiments, melatonin or glycine betain was added to lymphocyte culture medium. Treated or untreated lymphocytes were cultured for 60 hours and radiation induced apoptosis of the lymphocyte was analyzed by annexin-V staining through flow cytometery. Results: Relative radiation induced apoptosis ratio of the untreated lymphocytes is 1.22$\pm$1.1, 1.22$\pm$1.1, 1.38$\pm$1.0, 1.47$\pm$1.1, 1.50$\pm$1.2 by radiation dose of 0.5 Gy, 1.0 Gy, 2.0 Gy, 3.0 Gy and 5.0 Gy respectively. Relative radiation induced apoptosis ratio of lymphocytes is isolated from beer drunken donors is 0.97$\pm$1.0, 0.99$\pm$1.0, 1.11$\pm$0.9, 1.29$\pm$1.1, 1.15$\pm$1.1 by radiation doses respectively which are reduced 21.5% compared with untreated lymphocyte. Relative radiation induced apoptosis ratio of the lymphocytes is isolated from non-alcohol beer drunken donors is 1.22$\pm$1.1, 1.17$\pm$1.1, 1.13$\pm$1.3, 1.38$\pm$1.2, 1.32$\pm$1.1 by radiation dose of 0.5 Gy, 1.0 Gy, 2.0 Gy, 3.0 Gy and 5.0 Gy respectively which are reduced 10.8% compared with the untreated lymphocyte. Conclusion: As a result, it is suggested that beer may protect the lymphocyte from radiation damage and inhibit apoptosis.
This study was conducted to observe the changes in radiation exposure dose and image quality of pediatric patients according to the presence and size of the gonadal shield when using the AEC system. X-ray equipment was used to measure the radiation exposure dose in the abdominal and gonads of the pediatric phantom when no shielding body was used and when three different sizes of shielding body were used, and SNR and CNR were measured through the obtained images. As a result of the study, the radiation exposure dose to the gonads decreased in proportion to the size of the radiation shield, but the radiation exposure dose to the abdomen was rather increased, and the image quality did not change. It is recommended to use a shield with a size optimized for the age, weight, and body size of the pediatric patient so as not to be overexposed by the increased radiation due to the radiation shield due to the use of the AEC System. For this purpose, information about the pediatric patient with the nurse It is believed that exchange is necessary.
The study examined the changes in the decreased facial exposure dose for radiological technologists depending on increased distance between the workers and the X-ray tube head during intraoral radiography. First, the facial phantom similar to the human tissues was manufactured. The shooting examination was configured to the maxillary molars for adults (60kVp, 10mA, 50msec) and for children (60kVp, 10mA, 20msec), and the chamber was fixed where the facial part of the radiation worker would be placed using the intraoral radiography equipment. The distances between the X-ray tube head and the phantom were set to 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, 25cm, 30cm, 35cm, and 40cm. The phantom was radiated 20 times with each examination condition and the average scattered doses were examined. The rate at the distance of 40cm decreased by about 92.6% to 7.43% based on the scattered rays radiated at the distance of 10cm under the adult conditions. The rate at the distance of 40cm decreased by about 97.6% to 2.58% based on the scattered rays radiated at the distance of 10cm under the children conditions. Protection from the radiation exposure was required during the dental radiographic examination.
