  • Recently, the interest in the orthodontic treatment for children is increased by a rise in national income level. The number of cephalometric radiography that could diagnose a malocclusion and malposition between teeth and jawbone increased. It required attention to radiation exposure, because the subject of dental examination is children which are more sensitive to radiation and the head and neck, the object of that include radiation sensitive organ such as the thyroid, bone marrow, eyes, salivary gland, and so on. In this study, we measured two-dimensional dose distribution in cephalometric radiography system (VATEC Pax-400C) using Agfa CP-G Plus film and MagicMax Dosimeter, and calculated radiation organ dose of head and neck through MCNPX simulation. And then we designed a radiation protective device to decrease radiation dose. The dose distribution of the cephalometric radiography system irradiated the head and neck overall as well as the oral and maxillofacial parts. The radiation organ dose calculated that thyroid, oesophagus and eyes are irradiated high, and the radiation organ dose decreased about 70 ~ 80% by the application of the radiation protective device. The results of this study will be used construction of database for dental radiation exposure and research of reducing radiation dose.

  • In this study, the purpose of this study was to analyze the degree of exposure of radiation workers assigned to the Department of Radiology and frequent visitors during on-campus practice, and to conduct a basic study on the feasibility and optimization of the radiation protection of the Nuclear Safety Act for the Department of Radiology. . The average exposure dose of occupational workers by year was 0.01 mSv, the lowest in 2014 and 2016. The highest figure was 0.12 mSv in 2018. The average exposure dose of frequent visitors by year was the lowest at 0.013 mSv in 2018, and the highest at 0.022 mSv in 2016. According to this study, the annual exposure dose received by professors, practical assistants, and students in the department of radiology (department) who use only radiation generators in the course of in-school practice is less than 1 mSv, which is the dose limit for the general public. Therefore, at the time when the radiation dose of students in the Department of Radiology is lower than the dose limit of the general public, the current safety regulation of the Nuclear Safety law is judged to be excessive regulation. Therefore, it is considered necessary to revise the regulations for radiation generators in the current Nuclear Safety law or to revise the radiation safety management system for university students.

  • We investigated the radiation exposure caused by DIPS, which is used to identify accurate repositioning and tumor location in pediatric cancer patients proton therapy. To compare and analyze DIPS condition, 50 pediatric cancer patients who underwent proton therapy were selected in Ilsan K cancer-specialized hospital from March 2007 to October 2009. For DIP exposure, 0.09~1.57 mGy is measured in AP and lateral directions and 23.55 mGy is measured in CSI patients. In whole brain patient, the amount of a day DIP exposure dose was 1.13 mGy. During treatment period, who exposed the biggest DIP dose are whole brain patients, 632.71 mGy is exposed. It is 1.13% of prescribed dose, represented dose is adequate because it is not exceeded 2% of recommended dose. Even though the exposed dose is not exceeded more than 2% of prescribed in DIP exposure, we should recognize the radiation damage and genetic influences to pediatric cancer patients, who is much sensitive to radiation and has longer mean residual life time. Therefore, DIPS guideline for pediatric cancer patients should be indicated to minimize the radiation exposure.

  • Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology issued a Ministerial Ordinance (No 1992-15) about the technical criteria on personnel radiation dosimetry. In today's climate, it is important to demonstrate and document that the processor's systems and services to others meet national standards of quality. The purpose of this study is to verify the performance of the Teledyne PB-3 personnel dosimetry system that is generally used in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) by intercomparison with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The KAERI has been participated in this personnel dosimetry intercomparison study(PDIS) program since 1991 and it could be possible to test and calibrate personnel monitoring system. This report presents a summary and analysis of by about 50 dose equivalent measurements reported for PDIS-16 through 18 (1991 -1993) with emphasis on neutron dose equivalent sensitivity, accuracy and precision. Relationships of the PDIS results to occupational neutron monitoring and methods to improve personnel dosimetry performance are also discussed.

  • Tritium is the one of the most important radionuclide for workers in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and the public, from the dosimetric point of view. Humans are likely to have internal radiation exposure by tritium inhalation. Radiation exposure by tritium accounts for approximately 7% and 60~90% of the total radiation exposure of NPP workers and the public during normal operation, respectively. Thus, many researches have been conducted to estimate the internal dose by tritium precisely in the world. In terms of tritium dosimetry, this paper provides the current status of research for tritium metabolism and dosimetry.

  • From Jan 2002 to June 2011, we evaluated 4419 cases of radiation dose of 323 radiation related individuals consist of physician, nurses, technician and others in local C national university hospital. On annual analysis, year 2003 ranked the highest and 2007 the lowest dose. Dose was relatively higher in male than female. Dose was highest in 30s on age basis analysis. Dose was high in order of physician, nurse, and technician. Average radiation dose was high in order of cardiovascular center, radiologic intervention ceter, radiologist individuals, and fluoroscopic contrast study room. Those doses did not excess the standard dose recommended by ICRP (20mSv/year). However unlike average dose, there are wide variations of dose in individuals. Therefore radiation related workers should do one's best in personal radiation exposure dose management for achievement of minimum dose of radiation.

  • Because examination with technegas produces images through simple diffusion accumulation, the examination room can become contaminated after scan. Therefore, radiation workers and patients awaiting examination will be affected by internal exposure from technegas inhalation. Before and after gravity ventilation, I am trying to find a way to reduce the exposure dose of waiting patients according to a comparative analysis of horizontal spatial dose rates over time. Spatial dose ratio were measured for 10 minutes from various distances and angles around ventilator's location before and after gravity ventilation. Then, mean values, standard deviation and reduction ratio were calculated. The highest reduction rate of gravity ventilation was 95.31% and the highest reduction ratio was 1 to 3 minutes. Therefore, the gravity ventilation could reduce the exposure dose of radiologic technologists, waiting patients, patient guardians and nurses. In conclusion, the reduction of the exposure dose during the technegas ventilation study through gravity ventilation will play a role in optimiging the protection and it is in accordance with the recommended reduction of the medical exposure by ICRP 103.
