  • The COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is subjected to shock loads when the stage or fairing of a launch vehicle is separated and the satellite is separated from the launch vehicle during the launch vehicle flight. And, after the satellite is separated from the launcher, the COMS is subjected to shock loads when the solar array is deployed, Ka-Band communication antenna is deployed, and meteorological imager radiator cover is released. In order to validate the satellite safety against these shock loads on ground, shock tests were performed. In this paper, the shock tests performed in the course of the COMS development are described, and the method to assess the test result is presented with an example of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI). In Ariane-5 launch vehicle, the clampband release shock for satellite separation is lower than the fairing or stage separation. In this paper, the extrapolation method to take into account the maximum shock load from the launch vehicle by using the satellite separation shock test result is also introduced.

  • This study describes impact test methods for a rolling-stock windscreen executed in Korea and Europe. Air-pressurized impact test equipment for the front windscreens of high speed trains was designed and manufactured. The equipment is capable of launching a projectile at 500km/h, in accordance with EN 15152's impact test method. Calibration of the test equipment was conducted to find an equation relating air pressure and projectile velocity. Specimens ($1000mm{\times}700mm$) having similar specifications with the front windscreens in metro and conventional trains were used to conduct impact tests with this equipment to research the impact characteristics of the screens according to the impact velocity.

  • This study examines the response when the shock by underwater explosion is transmitted to a vertical launch air-vehicle mounted on a ship using modeling and simulation, and is about a plan to increase method shock resistance to protect the air vehicle. In order to obtain an accurate mathematical model, a dynamic characteristic test was performed on similar equipment, and through this, the mathematical model could be supplemented. And, using the supplemented mathematical model, the air vehicle simulated the shock response by the underwater explosion specified in the BV043 standard. As a result of the first simulation, it was confirmed that air vehicle could not withstand shock, and air vehicle protection method using a ring spring type shock absorber was studied. In addition to the basic shape of abosber, it was confirmed that the ring spring absober can be used to increase the impact resistance of a shipborn vertical launch vehicle by performing simulations for each case by changing deseign varables.

  • Pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is characterized as a transient vibration phenomena which shows large acceleration and high frequency range up to 10kHz during the operation of separation devices where explosives are used. During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyro-shock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, characteristics of pyroshock are introduced briefly, and PEEK washer shock absorber is applied for the reduction of pyroshock in the high frequency range. With some electronic devices, reduction characteristic of pyroshock using washer type shock absorber are studied. Random vibration tests are also performed for the verification of vibrational characteristics.

  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from the two-stage light gas gun. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The effect of a virtual mass is added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation system. The computed results reasonably capture the major flow characteristics which we generated in launching the projectile supersonically, such as the interaction between the shock wave and the blast wave, the interaction between the vortical flow and the barrel shock, and the steady under-expanded jet. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, and drag histories of the projectile.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the low-velocity impact responses and mechanical properties of balsa-wood and urethane-foam core materials and their sandwich panels, which are applied as the impact limiter of a nuclear spent fuel shipping cask. For the urethane-foam core, which is isotropic, tensile, compressive, and shear mechanical tests were conducted. For the balsa-wood core, which is orthotropic and shows different material properties in different orthogonal directions, nine mechanical properties were determined. The impact test specimens for the core material and their sandwich panel were subjected to low-velocity impact loads using an instrumented testing machine at impact energy levels of 1, 3, and 5 J. The experimental results showed that both the urethane-foam and the balsa-wood core except in the growth direction (z-direction) had a similar impact response for the energy absorbing capacity, contact force, and indentation. Furthermore, it was found that the urethane-foam core was suitable as an impact limiter material owing to its resistance to fire and low cost, and the balsa-wood core could also be strongly considered as an impact limiter material for a lightweight nuclear spent fuel shipping cask.

During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyroshock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. • Pyro-shock measurement system in launch vehicle is necessary to validate structural robustness and to prepare environmental qualification criteria for launch vehicle systems. This paper describes design, development and function test of prototype pyro-shock recorder to be employed on KSLV-I in the near future. Due to the limitation of telemetry transmission rate, pyro-shock recorder acquires and stores the shock sensor data with high sampling rate in short period and sends the data to the KSLV-I telemetry system with lower data rate. Signal conditioning in pyro-shock recorder is designed to enhance signal-to-noise ratio through proper placement of anti-aliasing filter.

  • The ballistic range has long been employed in a variety of engineering fields such as high-velocity impact engineering, projectile aerodynamics, creation of new materials, etc, since it can create an extremely high-pressure state in very short time. Two-stage light gas gun is being employed most extensively. The present experimental study has been conducted to develop a new type of ballistic range which can easily perform a projectile simulation. The ballistic range consists of a high-pressure tube, piston, pump tube, shock tube and launch tube. The experiment is conducted to find out the dependence of various parameters on the projectile velocity. The pressure in high-pressure tube, pressure of diaphragm rupture and projectile mass are varied to obtain various projectile velocities. This study also addresses the effect of the presence of a shock tube located between the pump tube and launch tube on system study. The experimental results are compared with those obtained through an author's theoretical study.
