Effect of Foot Massage on Anxiety and Pain in Mastectomy Patients (발마사지가 유방절제술 환자의 수술후 불안과 통증에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of foot massage as a nursing intervention on the anxiety and pain of the mastectomy patients. Method: This research was quasi-experimental study of a total of 28 patients with 14 in the experimental group and 14 in the control group. For the experimental group, foot massage for 30 minutes was given by a foot-massage specialist. Anxiety and pain were measure once before the foot massage and five times after the massage. The collected data were analyzed by repeated ANOVA and t-test using the SPSS 12.0 program. Result: There was a statistically significant decrease in anxiety and pain in the experimental group compared to the control group over 5 different times. Conclusion: The foot massage was effective on anxiety and pain in mastectomy patients in this study. Therefore, foot massage would be usefully utilized as a nursing intervention for mastectomy patients.

  • Purpose: This study utilized a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design to test the effects of foot massage on anxiety and sleep satisfaction response in preoperative patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Method: There were 40 subjects in the study (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group). The experimental group received foot massage once a day for 2 days before their operation. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics including mean, percentage, Chi-square, and t-test. Results: There were significant differences between experimental group and control group in the level of the state anxiety, pulse rate, and sleep satisfaction. Conclusions: Foot massage was effective in reducing anxiety and improving sleep satisfaction in abdominal surgical patients before their operation. Thus, foot massage may be used as an independent nursing intervention. This intervention can be performed anywhere, requires no special equipment, is noninvasive, and does not interfere with patients' privacy.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effect of foot massage on sleep, vital signs and fatigue in the elderly who live in their Home. Method: Data were collected from 20 elderly who live in the Seoul-Kyunggi province area by convenience sampling and analyzed the change of sleep and sleep satisfaction, vital signs(pulse, respiration, systolic and diastolic blood pressure) and general fatigue between pre and post foot massage using Paired t- test at 0.05 of significance level. Result: There were very significant difference in the sleep and fatigue between pre and post foot massage. Conclusion: Foot massage can improve the sleep and decrease fatigue, therefore we recommend to use foot massage as a effective sleep related nursing intervention in the elderly who live in their home.

  • This research applied Aromatherapy Foot Massage on Community elders and examined its effects on their chronic pain, sleep. The study subjects were 43 female elders in the community of including 22people for the experimental group and 21 for the control group. The aromatherapy was carried out 6times for 2weeks to the experimental group, 3times a week and 10minutes per session. The components of aroma essential oil included Chamomile roman, Lavender, Marjoram sweet, and Orange sweet that were diluted 20% into 100mL of Jojoba oil which was the carrier oil. The results, the experimental group that participated in the aromatherapy improved in chronic pain, quality of sleep, and the number of urination during sleep decreased compared to the control group. The research results demonstrated that due to the aroma foot massage, chronic pain decreased, sleep improved.

  • 걷기는 혈당관리를 위한 최고의 운동이지만 걸음으로서 혹사당하는 것이 있다. 걷기를 가능하게 해줌으로써 건강을 지켜주는 중요한 역할을 하지만 푸대접 받고 있는 것이 있었으니 바로 두 발이다. 얼굴이나 손은 자주 들여다보고 신경 쓰지만 발에는 유달리 무심하다. 당뇨인은 특히나 발 관리에 신경 써야 한다. 매일 꼼꼼하게 들여다보고 운동 후에는 마사지하는 습관을 들이자.

Effect of Foot Reflexology on Vital Signs, Fatigue and Mood in Cancer Patients receiving Chemotherapy (발마사지가 항암화학요법을 받는 암환자의 활력징후, 피로 및 기분상태에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effect of foot reflexology on vital signs, general fatigue, mood and foot fatigue in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Method: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 11 patients who were admitted at S and E University Hospital. Changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP), pulse rate(PR), general fatigue, mood status, and foot fatigue between pre and post foot reflexology were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test and Friedman test at 0.05 level of significance. Results: There were significant differences in the SBP(p= .009), DBP(p=.014), PR(p=.015), general fatigue (p=.015) mood status(p=.007), and foot fatigue(p= .007) between pre and post foot reflexology. Conclusion: Foot reflexology can improve vital signs, general/foot fatigue and mood status, therefore we recommend to use foot reflexology as an effective nursing intervention in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of foot massage on anxiety response in preoperative patients undergoing total hysterectomy. Among the fifty patients, twenty-five were the experimental group receiving foot massage for 10-minutes and twenty-five were the control group. Subjects were admitted to a hospital in Inchon city for total hysterectomy. This study was carried out from July 10th, to September 18th, 2000. The levels of anxiety were measured by the Visual Aanalogue Scale(VAS). State Anxiety Scale, blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate. Data were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test, unpaired t-test and ANCOVA with SPSS/pc program. The results were summarized as followings: 1. After foot massage, VAS anxiety level, state anxiety level, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate of the experimental group were decreased significantly than those measurements before the foot massage. 2. After foot massage, significant differences in the VAS anxiety level, state anxiety level, systolic blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate between the experimental and control groups were found. In conclusion, foot massage for 10 minutes is a useful nursing intervention that decreases anxiety in preoperative patients undergoing total hysterectomy.

  • Purpose: This research is to know whether aroma foot massage has influence on the relief of anxiety and pain during colonoscopy under conscious sedation. Method: This research was designed as a quasi-experiment of non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest. Data were collected from April 1 2005 to August 30 2005. The subjects were divided into three groups (control group, foot massage group and aroma foot massage group) with 30 persons each. Anxiety was evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), blood pressure and pulse. Pain response was measured with VAS and non-verbal pain behavior score. Sleep satisfaction was measured with a graphic rating scale. Data were analyzed through Chi-square test, t-test and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Systolic blood pressure, pulse, subjective anxiety and pain scores from the aroma foot massage group decreased significantly. Sleep satisfaction score of the aroma foot massage group increased significantly. Diastolic blood pressure from the aroma foot massage group did not decrease. Conclusion: The results show that aroma foot massage with refined oils can increase sleep satisfaction and decrease anxiety and pain during colonoscopy under conscious sedation.

Effects on Couples' Communication, Intimacy, Conflict and Quality of Life by Foot Massage between Immigrants (결혼 이민자 부부 간의 발마사지가 부부의 의사소통, 친밀감, 갈등 및 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on immigrant couples' communication, intimacy, conflict and quality of life when using foot massage. Methods: The research design consisted of pre-and-post test consecutive experimental design through a nonequivalent control group. Data were collected July 6, 2009 to February 27, 2010. The 36 couples were divided into two groups, experimental and control with 18 couples in each group. Foot massage was applied twice a week for 6 weeks by the couples in the experimental group. Results: There were statistically significant increases in communication (p=.011), intimacy (p<.001), quality of life (p=.017) between the couples in the experimental group compared to the control group. There was also a statistically significant decrease in conflict (p=.003) between the couples in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Foot massage can be applied as a nursing intervention for improvement of marital relationship in immigrant couples.
