  • The purpose of this study is to portray the phenomena of information poverty of the families of children with developmental disabilities. The focus was especially put on investigating their information needs of everyday lives and information-seeking behaviors. The sample group includes six children with developmental disabilities and their families, mainly mothers. The investigation was conducted by the participant observation and in-depth interviews. The study found out that they sought the formal information sources such as medical specialists and special agencies first with which they were not satisfied. As a result, they rather relied on informal information sources. And the information from 'the group of families of children with developmental disabilities' was thought to be the most reliable information for them. In terms of information related behaviors, the strongest information needs were regarding the children's special education, especially to the school education, and they made effort to seek reliable information. They, however, tended to passively treat their personal concerns that are not related to their disabled children. This study found out that their information poverty is in terms of the information environment, information sources and their attitude to information, and that it comes from the external(social) factors as well as internal(individual) ones.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions and tasks of lifelong education for individuals with disabilities, including the necessity of lifelong education and the range and content of it for the disabled. The research method is a focus group interview with 4 managers of lifelong education institutions for the disabled, and the data were analyzed according to the process of thematic analysis method proposed by Braun and Clarke(2006), which is one of qualitative data analysis methods. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the lifelong education for the disabled is needed, because, unlike the non-disabled, the disabled are less able to recognize and respond to social changes, which requires equipment or convenience facilities to improve it. Second, the range of lifelong education for the disabled was suggested as social life including daily life, vocational ability development education, culture·art·physical training, and those required by individuals with disabilities. Third, the lifelong education institutions for the disabled are lack of experts and have difficulty in communicating between practitioners and the disabled. In conclusion, it is required to provide lifelong education by self-determination of the disabled in the community by priority.

  • Nowadays, many interface devices or training systems have been developed with recent developments in IT technology but only a few training systems for developmentally disabled people have been introduced. In this paper, we present a real-time, interactional and situational training system based on augmented reality in order to improve cognitive capability and adaptive ability in the daily life of developmentally disabled people. Our system is specifically based on serving food in restaurants. This augmented reality based system provides them to experience various different situations safely and take the training session as much as they want under any circumstances. When they use our system, they are able to look around with Head Mounted Display(HMD) and take training sessions easily based on various situational scenarios. After experimenting on our system for 3 months, we found they had no aversion about wearing HMD and learned quicker as they practiced over and over and improved their cognitive capability and adaptive ability. We also got a positive feedback that it had an excellent educational value from teachers in special-education-school.

  • This study aimed to introduce the main concepts of Supported Living(SL) model, very few of which have discussed in the context of S. Korea, explore the potential to employ SL model, and draw the implication for social welfare for people with developmental disabilities(DD) in S. Korea. For this purpose, this study presented the developmental background, main concepts, and principles of SL model, compared SL with supported housing and explained the features of SL model. Additionally, this study reviewed SL schemes in the UK and Australia to understand how SL schemes impact the lives of people with DD. Furthermore, this study addressed the contents of SL manuals used in the UK and Australia and identified the core aspects of SL practice. Based on the findings, this study highlighted the importance of SL as the conceptual model for independent living of people with DD and discussed the implication of SL model in S. Korea in terms of the national institution for people with DD, service agencies, and service users. This study focused on the SL model as a conceptual model for the independence of people with DD, potentials to employ SL model, and its implication for social welfare for people with disabilities in S. Korea. SL model and its application showed that SL model is effective and flexible in supporting the independent living of people with DD. Findings and implications regarding SL model could be the basis for the development of the Korean supported living system to improve the independent living of people with DD.
