An animal fat is an attractive biodiesel energy source for its high stability against oxidation and low incomplete combustion ratio due to the high heating value and cetane value. However, it requires a refinery process because of the high content of saturated acid and impurity which increas the boiling point. In this study, the optimum biodiesel synthetic process of lard is suggested. Indeed, we demonstrate new biodiesel production processes to alter conventional process of heating and mixing by applying ultrasonic energy. While the optimum reaction temperature and mole ratio of methanol and lard, when using conventional mixing and heating process, were $55^{\circ}C$ and 12, respectively, the reaction time were reduced to 30 minutes by applying ultrasonic irradiation power of 500 W. The new process applying ultrasonic irradiation yielded synthetic biodiesel properties as followings: 3.34 cP of the viscosity, 37.0 MJ/kg of the caloric value and below 0.25 mgKOH/g of the acidic value, which satisfy biodiesel quality criteria.

Nitrite and free ammonia have been known as substrate inhibitors in anaerobic ammonium oxidation. To reduce inhibitory effect of these substrates, the NH$_3$-N/NO$_2$-N ratio in the influent could be properly controlled in anaerobic ammonium oxidation process. Five kinds of NH$_3$-N/NO$_2$-N ratio were assayed in batch to find optimum NH$_3$-N/NO$_2$-N ratio, curtailing substrate inhibition. As the results of batch test, the highest T-N removal efficiency of 88% was obtained at 1.00 : 1.30 of NH$_3$-N/NO$_2$-N ratio. In addition, rate constants for ammonium and nitrite in zero-order kinetics were found to be the highest values as 7.66 mg/L$\cdot$hr and 11.89 mg/L$\cdot$hr at 1.00 : 1.30 ratio, respectively. However, as for the specific anammox activity, the ratio of NH$_3$-N/NO$_2$-N ratio was recommended as 1 : 1.15 which can maintain the highest SAA during continuous operation and preclude the accumulation of nitrite in the reactor.
To elucidate the physiological and biochemical differences between chondrichthyes and osteichthyes, the properties of the specific digestive enzymes in cat-shark, Cephaloscyllium umbratile, and mackerel, Scomber japonicus, were studied. Homogenous trypsin proved through the disc-electrophoresis, SDS-PAG electrophoresis and gel filtration was obtained from the pancreas of cat-shark by $50-70\%$ saturated ammonium sulphate fractionation, DEAE-Sephadex A-50 column chromatography, benzamidine-Sepharose 6B affinity chromatography and Sephadex G-75-120 gel filtration. Two types of trypsins were also obtained from the pyloric caeca of mackerel by $30-70\%$ saturated ammonium sulphate fractionation and the slightly modified procedure from the method adopted in the purification of cat-shark trypsin. The two trypsins, designated trypsin A and B, were proved their homogeneity by disc- and SDS-PAG electrophoresis and gel filtration. The molecular weights of the trypsins were estimated to be 31,700 for cat-shark trypsin, 30,000 for mackerel trypsin A and 29,000 for mackerel trypsin B by SDS-PAG electrophoresis, but those were estimated to be 21,500 for cat-shark trypsin, 23,700 for mackerel trypsin A and 21,500 for mackerel trypsin B by gel filtration. The trypsins exhibited their optimum conditions at pH 9.0 and on temperature ranged from $45^{\circ}C\;to\;50^{\circ}C$ for cat-shark, and at pH 8.0 and a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ for mackerel trypsin A and B, respectively. The cat-shark trypsin was stable at pH 10.0 and the temperature below $10^{\circ}C$, whereas the mackerel trypsin A and B, were stable in the range over pH 7.0 to pH 9.0 below $10^{\circ}C$ and at pH 8.0 below $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. The mackerel trypsins were severely inhibited by some heavy metal ions such as $Ag^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ compared to cat-shark trypsin. All of the enzymes were also inhibited by antipain, leupeptin, TLCK(tosyllysine chloromethyl ketone) and SBTI(soybean trypsin inhibitor) remarkably. The inhibitory effects of PMSF(phenylmethane sulphonylfluoride), DFP(diisopropyl fluorophosphate) and benzamidine were indicated that these enzymes belong to serine-proteases.
There have been few studies related to ELISA for mackerel. In this study we developed a sandwich ELISA for mackerel in processed foods using rabbit polyclonal antibodies against mackerel parvalbumin, the major allergen of mackerel and heat-stable protein. The parvalbumin was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and Sephadex G-50 column chromatography. From the standard ELISA curves, the detection limit of parvalbumin was 3 ng/mL and the detection range of mackerel was 5-5,000 ${mu}g/mL$. We further investigated the cross-reactivity of the antibodies toward mackerel, mackerel pike, salmon, flatfish, armorclad rockfish, cod fish, squid, shrimp, blue crab, and lobster. The antibodies were specific for mackerel only. The mean assay recoveries in cooked cream soup, baby food, sausage, and sauce spiked with 0.01 to 0.3% mackerel were 104, 101, 54, and 0%, respectively. In sample tests of 16 commercial items, the qualitative coincidence ratio of assay result and indication was 75%.
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine whether hand-measured carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was a reliable and simple tool that could be used to evaluate the severity of stable coronary artery disease (CAD) with normal high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP). Material and Method: We examined left carotid IMTs in 688 patients with stable CAD and excluded 121 patients with abnormally elevated hs-CRP ($\geq$0.5 mg/dL). We sought to determine the association between risk factors and the severity of stable CAD and carotid IMT in 567 patients who were divided into lower and higher groups based on the median value. Patients underwent a coronary artery angiogram and had at least significant stenosis (>50% of the original luminal diameter involving one or more major coronary artery). Result: Of the 567 patients, 300 (52.9%) were in the lower IMT group and 267 (47.1%) were in the higher IMT group; the median value was 0.76 mm. By multivariable logistic regression analysis, the following groups were different: older age (~49 vs. 70~ years, respectively; OR=6.552), high FBS (~99 vs. 120~ mg/dL; OR=1.713) and severity of CAD (1 vessel vs. 2 vessel disease; OR=1.711, 1 vessel vs. 3 vessel disease; OR=1.714). Conclusion: We conclude that there are correlations between increased carotid IMT and severity of CAD in stable angina patients with normal CRP levels.

This study is to develop an assessment system for stream physical environments by considering stream characteristics. Comprehensively, the descriptions of and steam classification, assessing reach selection, contents of assessment categories and indexes are summarized. Since the physical structure of stream is results of reaction by stream power, streams were classified into three types (as high gradient stream, mid gradient stream and low gradient stream) according to the slope of channel, the grain size of bed material and the characteristics of channel topography. The scale of assessment reach was selected based on 10 or 25 times of channel width according to typical characteristics such as interval of step or riffle and sinuosity in each stream type. The assessment indexes were organized into common indicators such as channel stability, flow status, cross-section shape, bank stability, channel alteration and stream crossing structure, and characteristic indicators by stream type such as effective habitats, bed embeddedness, diversity of flow and frequency of step or riffle. To evaluate the applicability, the assessment system was applied to 9 streams and the results were analyzed and presented.
To improve the functional properties as a food, silk fibroin was phosphorylated with STMP In the phosphorylation reaction of silk fibroin, the degree of phosphorylation was increased with high alkali index and treatment temperature. Depending on treatment time and concentration of STMP it was rapidly increased up to 1hr. and 50%, but slowly above that time and 100%. It was indicated in the results of FT-IR analysis and $\^$31/p NMR spectroscopy of phosphorylated fibroin that it had a close ∝-helix and poly-phosphate structure. The more phosphorylation of fibroin made more turbidity, foam expansion and foam stability, but less solubility. Emulsifying activity was increased up to P100, but slightly decreased above Pl00 and emulsifying stability was constantly increased on the progressing of phosphorylation.
Reaction of glucose and xylose to secondary hydrolysis of concentrated acid hydrolysis was quantitatively analyzed by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopic method. Anomeric hydrogen, furan and formic acid peaks were selected for quantitative analysis. The glucose was converted to the formic acid and the levulinic acid via the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) but the xylose was converted to the fufural, which further degraded to the formic acid. The conversion to furans was slower for the glucose than the xylose. But the 5-HMF formed from the glucose was unstable in acidic aqueous medium, resulted in fast conversion to the levulinic acid and the formic acid. The furfural was relatively stable than 5-HMF at acidic aqueous medium.
