A study on the relationship between image and signification: Through the theory of Roland Barthes (이미지와 의미 부여에 대한 일고찰 - 바르트의 이미지론을 중심으로)

  • This paper examines the discussions related to image and signification through the theories of Roland Barthes. We have already been able to see through the studies of Semiotics and Anne H?nault that the denotation is distinguished from the connotation in the linguistic dimension. Through the analysis of the advertising image of Barthes, we have seen that the syntagmatic relationship can make the sense of the image objective. From this study, we also emphasized that it is possible to subjectively interpret images that deviate from the syntagmatic relationship. In addition, we examined the concepts of Studium and Punctum by Barthes. With this we have found that the definition of a personal meaning to objects has a theoretically clear position. Finally, we have been able to understand the concept of 'le sens obtus' through the article ${\ll}$ Le troisi?me sens ${\gg}$. The notion of 'sens obtus' makes it possible to realize that the objective and clear sense of object is not the one chosen primarily from the subject. By facing an object such as an image to be interpreted, the subject is placed in a situation where he is not compelled to choose a meaning but rather he chooses one of the possible senses. This makes it clear that the semantic levels provided by semiotic theories are limited to the analytic dimension.

  • 'Hoon's family story' is worth analysing because it is appreciated one of excellent advertising campaigns made success of gaining social sympathy and inducing interaction on media. And advertisements expressions have been regarded as the tort that we should analyze by semiotic methods. This paper provides possibilities of the advertisement analysis matrix for analysing significations of this campaign based on theories of Roland Barthes and Roman Jakobson for advertising planners and designers.

  • This study explores the relationship between images and texts through advertising production using images and texts, and analyzes the student works with the semiotics of Roland Barth. Since Barth emphasized the interpreter's interpretation rather than the producer's intention in his work, he interpreted the work as a receiver. It was analyzed in terms of socio-cultural meaning of what students produced in the works. A total of 64 classes were held for the first two classes in D high school. The results of analyzing students' works after the advertisement production class are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing Barth 's myth structure model, advertisement image and text are symbols and have meaning. Second, advertising image and text complement each other and have the characteristic of interrelationship that constitutes meaning. Third, By attracting the socio-cultural implications inherent in the students' advertising, their values and interests could be discovered.

  • This study analyzes how Princess Deokhye's photos before entering elementary school were exploited in newspapers during the Japanese colonial period by introducing Roland Barthes' semiological methodology for analysis of photography. In the early 1920s, the Japanese imperialists actively exploited Princess Deokhye, who was about to enter elementary school, to propagate their education policy. The Maeil Shinbo cooperated with their policies by publishing photos and articles of Princess Deokhye. In this paper, 2 photos and articles published in Maeilshinbo were analyzed. As a result, it was found that messages were produced that justified Japanese education policy by using various rhetorical techniques of photography and texts complementary to each other, and that the readers were induced to accept them naturally. In conclusion, it was possible to reveal the seriousness of the problem in that these articles were not merely for propaganda of policy, but were to encourage the disappearance of the traditional values of Joseon.

  • Roland Barthes views a myth as a chain of connotative concepts that are mutually connected. For him, a myth appears through a chain connotation that is mutually related, due to the first-stage signification system. In other words, the connotation of a particular scene is already inherent in a culture in the form of social convention or social values before it is made. In the case of Disney animation, as mentioned Barthes, it has also two layers of denotation and connotation for signification. However, Disney animation shows the tendency that seek the denotative representation and the direct communication, based on the typified character, to the representation and delivery of the myth that is inherent. Therefore, the tendency of denotative signification is seen Disney animation can be said as a branch of research methodology for the approach to the aesthetics of Disney animation.

  • In this paper, study on organization factors and algorithm of semiotics in Animation text within Roland Gerard Barthes's Structurism semiotics theory. It is possible through this approach that we can analyse the effective mechanism which delivers messages(or text) of animation, instead of plain analysis of classical semiotics. and then It will be able to keep watch on the blind viewpoint of the pure aesthetics which does not consider a social duty. In the expression of single sentence by the view of Barthes's semiotics theory, the text of animation is 'one sign has duplex role'. when it is explained another, the animation of mass media is special processing that makes conception and significance. in other words, the order of domination likely natural rule assimilate mass people to itself by the animation of mass media

  • The study on the analytical and productive methodolgy of visual culture contents is meaningful because cultural contents are regarded as a national growth industry. The fundamental notion of cultural contents is researched based on the notion of visual culture, and important factors of the fun are analyzed as a creative motive of visual culture contents. So this paper provides anaytical methodologies for the fun in visual culture contents, which are based on semiotic theories of Charles Morris, Roland Barthes and Roman Jakobson. These analytical matrix can be references for the study of the mechanism of fun and the basic theory for using fun effects in the visual culture contents.

  • The semiotics philosopher Roland Barthes declared 'the death of the author'. This means a sense of skepticism about author-centered writing in literature, and that readers and critics must also change their reading attitudes. In architecture, too, author-centered design appears. Architects sometimes try to express their will and concepts strongly through their work. However, this architecture is oriented toward identity, self-revealing, self-centered, and eventually without inspiration. On the other hand, the signifier does not result in a single meaning, and it is architecture as text that allows readers to enjoy the pleasure of deciphering. The purpose of this study is to investigate that unilateral by the will of the architect. Or whether there is a potential for non-intelligence and the possibility of generating meaning. In particular, we will analyze the works of Rem Koolhaas, SANAA and Sou Fujimoto to see if they are free from the will of the architect and can obtain the user's true freedom. As a result, we want to reveal the potential of various interpretations by users in contemporary architecture.

  • This study analyzes the Trinitarian principles of Christian education through the neo-orthodox theology of Karl Barth, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich in the current era of postmodernism. Both neo-orthodoxy and postmodernism react against the epistemological ideals of modernity. Postmodernism is based on a limited human point of view, and thus becomes a captive to its own subjectivity, producing two main characteristics - pluralism and relativism. Since neo-orthodoxy appeared as a reaction against human-centered modernity, critical analysis of neo-orthodox theology can give insights to cope with the challenges of postmodernism in Christian education today. Thus, this study bases its argument critically on the thoughts of neo-orthodox theologians such as Karl Barth, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich, since they responded to the challenges of enlightenment through rediscovering fundamental theological principles. First of all, this study examined the meaning of God's creation and the fall and provided the principle of theistic relativism. Secondly, this study explored educational insights from Jesus' crucifixion, through His work of redemption, liberation, and restoration and suggests an incarnated relationship building. Thirdly, the study analyzed the caring and comforting work of the Holy Spirit and emphasized the power of the Holy Spirit that heals corrupted human reason and enables loving relationships.

  • Images play an important role in the symbolic system as they are connected with imagination through the association of language. Through history, we know that Korean people have been a people of strong spiritual unity and unity for thousands of years. I tried to study how the Korean people's unified mental symbol system was utilized and accomplished through mythological images. Our people are recognized as a people of white clothes because they are connected with white clothes, and modifiers such as the country of the east where the sun does not go down are connected with the sun. The Korean people have been handed down according to the times, such as the son of the sky, the Hongik man, the birch tree and the Gyerim of Silla, as a symbol of the myth of Gojoseon, and do not know when it became a country that loved the sun and whether brightness became a symbol. In relation to the spiritual symbolic system of our nation, the mythical image of Jeju musindo embedded in the shamanist ideology was reinterpreted through the meaning of Roland Bart to provide a basis for the study of the spiritual symbolic system of our nation.
