  • A breakwater is a important structure for both calmness of harbor and protection of the port facilities from waves generated from typhoons or wind. This study adopted the rubble mound breakwater, which is one of the most popular type of breakwaters in Korea. Rubble mound breakwater had been designed by considering only static condition previously. Recently, a dynamic wave-load due to waves has been also considered in designing breakwater. In design, the wave-load is assumed as an uniform load which only acts in the front slope of the breakwater. However, the assumption is not applicable in reality. In this study, therefore, a real-time wave-load acting on the breakwater instead of the uniform load is considered, and it is assumed to be acting on the seabed too. Based on the numerical analysis, it is found that there is a significant difference in the maximum settlement compared with the result predicted by the existing design method.

  • In this paper, response of pile foundations under seismic loading is studied for use in aseismic design of deep foundations. Both the pseudostatic methods such as subgrade reaction theory by Reese, and elastic analysis by Poulos, and the dynamic methods proposed by, respectively, Prakash and Gazetas, are used for this study. The top displacements and maximum bending moments of example piles are obtained by each method mentioned above, and the results by each method are compared among others. The group pile effects are also considered approximately. The calculated results are compared with experimental results obtained by Novak in 1984. The pseudostatic methods, combined with dynamic group interaction factors, and the dynamic method proposed by Gazetas which considers both kinematic interaction and inertial interaction, separately, estimate the top displacements reasonably well : the method by Prakah or the pseudostatic methods combined with static group interaction factors may overestimate the top displacements and bending moments as well. Therefore, it is recommended to the the simple elastic analysis combined with dynamic group interaction factors for aseismic design of pile foundatins and to confirm the results by the Gaz etas' dynamic methods.

  • This paper describes a simplified numerical procedure for analyzing the response of bridge pier foundations due to riverbed scouring. A computationally efficient algorithm to analyze the behavior of a pile group is proposed by considering soil-pile, pile-cap, and pile-fluid interactions. The complex phenomenon of the pile-soil interaction is modeled by discrete nonlinear soil springs (p-y, t-z and q-z curves). The pile-cap interaction is considered by geometric configuration of the piles in a group and connectivity conditions between piles and the cap. The pile-fluid interaction is incorporated into the procedure by reducing the stiffness of the soil-pile reactions as a result of nonlinearity and degradation of the soil stiffness with river bridge scouring. Through the numerical study, it is shown that the maximum bending moment increases with increasing scour depth. Thus it is desirable to check the stability elf pile groups based on soil-pile and pile-cap interactions by considering scouring depth in the riverbed.

  • In high multistory buildings, hybrid coupled shear walls can provide an efficient structural system to resist horizontal force due to wind and seismic loads. Hybrid coupled shear walls are usually built over the whole height of the building and are laid out either as a series of walls coupled by steel beams with openings to accommodate doors, elevator walls, windows and corridors. In this paper, the behavior characteristics of hybrid coupled shear wall system considering connection details is examined through results of an experimental research program where 5 two-thirds scale specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Such connections details are typically employed in hybrid coupling wall system consisting of steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables of this study are embedment length of steel coupling beam and wall thickness of concrete shear wall. The results and discussion presented in this paper provide fundamental data for seismic behavior of hybrid coupled shear wall systems.

  • In this study, a story-wise distribution of hysteretic energy in steel moment resisting framse(MRF), buckling restrained braced frames(BRBF), and hinge-connected framed structures with buckling restrained braces(HBRBF) subjected to various earthquake ground excitations was investigated. Sixty earthquake ground motions recorded in different soil conditions were used to compute the energy demand in model structure. According to analysis results, the hysteretic energy in MRF and BRBF turned out to be the maximum at the base and monotonically diminishes with increasing height. However the story-wise distribution of hysteretic energy in HBRBF was relatively uniform over the height of the structure. In this case damage is not concentrated in a single story, and therefore it is considered to be more desirable than other systems. The story-wise energy distribution pattern under three different soil types turned out to be approximately the same.

  • This study is intended to develop an accurate and efficient, analytical thin-walled beam model, and to analyze overall behavior of SWATH ship under repeated overloads. SWATH ship is idealized to a simple thin-walled beam of channel type. An analytical beam model is formulated by the stress component with geometrically(fully) nonlinear thin-walled beam and treated numerically by the Finite Element Method. An efficient cyclic plasticity model is also included, suitable for material nonlinear behavior under complex loading conditions. The local stress distribution can be very exactly represented and the material yielding propagation, easily traced. In addition, the local treatment of the effect of shear deformation improves the representation of deformation and shear stress distribution along the section contour. It is desirable to use the analytical thin-walled beam at initial design stage, and is needed to improve the practical thin-walled beam model advancing the current approach.

  • The problem controlling lateral drift by the wind and the earthquake is very important in high rise buildings. But, outrigger system, generally used for residential tall buildings in Korea, has weak points with the occupancy of special space, the difficult construction and the long duration of works. On the other hand, the damper reduces story drifts of building structure by absorbing vibration energy induced by the dynamic loads and the application of damper systems is relatively simple. Also, the lateral drift control system such as outrigger system may raise the wind vibration problem of serviceability like human comfort and this problem may need another vibration control devices. Accordingly, we analyze the effect of the drift control using various dampers to substitute for outrigger system as the efficient system in residential tall buildings.

  • As an urbanization is in progress, the change of the planimetric features and topography including high-rise residential buildings commonly occur. The change of the planimetric features and topography causes occurrence of the strong wind and wind speed increase or decrease due to the effect of planimetric features and topography on the windward side even though the wind blows with the same speed. In the design standard, this change by wind speed is defined as the velocity pressure exposure coefficient, the value of coefficient is estimated and reflected by ground surface roughness, but in a reality, ground surface roughness is determined in accordance with the subjective judgement of designer and then the velocity pressure exposure coefficient is estimated, moreover the research and data for classification of ground surface roughness are insufficient. In this paper, we will estimate the velocity pressure exposure coefficient by the quantified method for classifying ground surface roughness by using GIS according to the height of a building targeting area where high-rise residential buildings are built lately. When the structure subjected to wind load is designed, reasonability of design and safety of structure will be more improved by using the estimation method of velocity pressure exposure coefficient presented in this study.

  • The uncertainties encountered in the stability analysis for the foundation of offshore structures on clay are formulated in probabilistic terms and used to evaluate the reliability of the foundation design. The major sources of uncertainty are: soil properties, f.ave loads, and methods of analysis. The major part of the uncertainty in safety factor is contributed by the uncertainty in the undrained shear strength. All sources of uncertainties that affect the shear strength of clay are modeled and systematically analyzed. The in situ undrained shear strengths are evaluated by laboratory tests and cone penetration tests. The undrained shear strengths from the laboratory test and CPT, respectively at Statfjord B site in the North Sea, are used as an example in risk analysis. Using the CPT alone, the failure probability on sliding of gravity platform at Statfjord B is much larger than the failure probability using the laboratory undrained shear strengths. The major uncertainty of using the CPT as the estimate of th2 undrained shear strength of clay results from the correlation between the cone resistance and the undrained shear strength.

  • The rural population is aging and farmers need to aim for mass production. This study examined the work efficiency of clamping and protecting crops. Strong winds are a risk for damage, but there are no reports of studies of the geometric design problem for vegetation. The accuracy of the simulation to obtain a load applied to the actual support and index was examined. The model was selected according to its strength based on the reliability of the simulation. Also acts in force of 0.1N to 0.6N, which can withstand the force of 1.29N with the results of this thesis research. The fixed clamp fixing for agricultural crops designed as a support was examined. These results are expected to help shorten working hours, and improve the growth of crops and disaster prevention.
