  • Most civil engineering structures such as bridges, power plants, and offshore platforms are apt to suffer structural damages over their service lives caused by adverse loadings, such as earthquakes, wind and wave forces. Accumulation of structural damages over a long period of time might cause catastrophic structural failure. Therefore, a methodology for monitoring the structural integrity is essential for assuring the safety of the existing structures. A method for the damage assessment of structures by the second order inverse modal perturbation technique is presented in this paper. Perturbation equation consists of a matrix equation involving matrices of structural changes(stiffness and mass matrix changes) and matrices of modal property changes(natural frequency and mode shape changes). The damages of a structure are represented as changes in the stiffness matrix. In this study, a second order perturbation equation is formulated for the damage assessment of structures, and solved by an iterative procedure. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been investigated through a series of example analysis. The estimated results for the structural damage indicated that the present method yields resonable estimates for the structural changes.

  • The application of the diagrid structural system has increased of late, but cyclic loadings such as winds and earthquakes cannot be fully understood through only an analytical study due to the difficulty of considering its welding property. In this study, diagrid nodes that had been scaled down to 1/5 of their full sizes were tested to find out their structural behavior under seismic or wind loads. Four specimens were used with five parameters, including the welding method and the design details. Cyclic loading tests were carried out, where a tensile load was applied to one brace member and a compression load to the other. The major failure modes in the tests were only failure of bending with tensile stress and tension failure. The welding method and the design details had no effect on the initial stiffness and yielding stress but play a significant role in the failure mode and energy dissipation, respectively.

  • Once the building is higher than certain size, the wind effect plays very important role in structure design. Moreover, this is more important in Korea because dangerous phenomena like typhoons are common. Rational wind resistant design is being magnified considering the global flow and climate changes. This research presented the estimation method of design wind load using spatial information analysis based on 1:5,000 digital map and performed comparative analysis with actual application cases. The wind velocity pressure exposure coefficient and topographic coefficient turned out to be more quantitative and rational when calculated through the proposed method. The time and cost are comparatively low when compared with traditional method which contribute to the economic and rational wind resistant design.

  • This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuate wind velocity statistic properties in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with largest data samples (yearly 2003-2012). The basic wind speeds were standardized homogeneously to the surface roughness category C, and to 10m above the ground surface. The estimation of the extreme of non-Gaussian load effects for design applications has often been treated tacitly by invoking a conventional wind design (gust load peak factor) on the basis of Gaussian processes. This assumption breaks down when the loading processes exhibits non-Gaussianity, in which a conventional wind design yields relatively non conservative estimates because of failure to include long tail regions inherent to non-Gaussian processes. This study seeks to ascertain the probability distribution function from recently wind data with effected typhoon & maximum instantaneous wind speed.

  • Recently, in order to utilize more effectively underground space, deep excavations have been performed on building or subway construction in urban areas. In such excavations, anchors have been used to support the excavation retaining walls because the anchored excavation could provide wide working space for underground construction. The purpose of this paper is to establish empirical equations to be able to estimate the earth pressures acting on anchored excavation retention walls, based on the investigation of field measuring results, which were obtained from twenty seven building construction sites. The prestressed anchor force was measured by load cells which were attached to the anchor head, while the horizontal displacement of excavation walls were measured by inclinometers which were installed right'behind the retention walls. The lateral earth pressures acting on the anchored retention walls, which were estimated from both the measured anchor forces and the horizontal displacement of the walls, showed a trapezoidal distribution. There was some difference between the measured earth pressures acting on the anchored retention walls and the empirical earth pressures given by several empirical equations. Thus, the lateral earth pressures acting on anchored retention walls would be estimated by these empirical equations with some modifications.

  • Rotor blades are important devices that affect the power performance, efficiency of energy conversion, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. When a design is complete, a design evaluation should be performed to verify the structural integrity of the proposed blade in accordance with international standards or guidelines. This paper presents a detailed exposition of the evaluation items and acceptance criteria required for the design certification of wind turbine blades. It also presents design evaluation results for a 2-MW blade (KR40.1b). Analyses of ultimate strength, buckling stability, and tip displacement were performed using FEM, and Miner's rule was applied to evaluate the fatigue life of the blade. The structural integrity of the KR40.1b blade was found to satisfy the design standards.

  • Two different UHPCCs having different fiber lengths and volume fractions are considered to be applied to bridge decks. The objective of this study is to estimate cracking resistance of the two UHPCCs. The notched beam tests were performed with the UHPCCs, and the relationships between load and CMOD(Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) were obtained from the tests. The tensile stress and crack opening relationships optimally fitting the measured load-CMOD curves were found through the inverse analyses. The UHPCC with 2% volume fraction of 13 mm long fiber has lower fracture energy than the UHPCC with 0.5% and 1.0% volume fractions of 16.3 mm and 19.5 mm long fibers, respectively. It indicates that the latter UHPCC is more effective in uniformly distributing crack formation and reducing crack width.

  • In recent, lots of researches for mechanical-empirical design concept for asphalt pavement are on going. AASHTO 2002 Design Guide in USA and KPRP(Korean Pavement Research Program) in Korea are under developing. In these programs, the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt are a key role for design and analysis. Unfortunately, there is no proper database on the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt, such as dynamic modulus. The use of dynamic modulus has couple of good advantages which is based on temperature, traffic loading and frequency on pavement. In this research, the verification of the relationship between maximum nominal aggregate size and dynamic modulus has been carried out. Also, test specimen size effect on dynamic modulus has been conducted. Considering the limitation of laboratory testing machine in Korea, test specimen with 100mm diameter and 150mm height is recommended for dynamic modulus test. Also, as the maximum nominal aggregate size increases, the dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt increases.

  • Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) show good seismic behavior. They do not dissipate energy, however, when they are subjected to minor earthquakes or wind. Hybrid Buckling Restrained Braces (H-BRBs), which can improve the wind performance of the BRB system, are a kind of hybrid damper system composed of a viscoelastic damper and BRBs. In this paper, two H-BRB specimens with different cores were experimentally investigated to ensure the structural behavior of the H-BRB system in an elastic range. The axial deformation of the primary resisting system was compared with that of the secondary resisting system, and the equivalent damping ratio of the H-BRBs was estimated. It was concluded that H-BRBs with double shear dampers show good structural behavior and are applicable to tall buildings, to improve the building performance at a comfortable level.
