  • High-frequency staircases are widely used nowadays to meet aesthetics and functionality needed in modern architecture. Unfortunately, no design guide is available in domestic practice to predict response or evaluate the vibration performance of high-frequency staircases. SCI-P354 published by the Steel Construction Institute of UK provides the formula for effective impulsive force. However, this formula was shown to overestimate the response of high-frequency staircases excited by fast ascending and descending over 2.2Hz pace frequency because it was developed based on the walking test in a slow pace frequency. This study proposes a semi-analytical formula to predict the response of stiff staircases based on analytical and experimental studies of response acceleration for various walking frequencies covering 1.4~4.5Hz.

  • The tool path needs to be determined in an efficient manner to generate the final NC (numerical control) code for efficient machining. This is particularly important in machining free form pockets with an arbitrary wall geometry on a three-axis CNC machine. Many CAD/CAM systems use linear interpolation to generate NC tool paths for curved surfaces. However, this needs to be modified to improve the smoothness of the machined bottom surface, reduce machining time and CL (cutter location) file size. Curved machining can be a solution to reduce these problems. The unified rough and finish cut algerian and the tool motion is graphically simulated. In this paper, a grid based 3D navigation algorithm for generating NC tool path data for both linear interpolation and a combination of linear and circular interpolation for three-axis CNC milling of general pockets with sculptured bottom surfaces is developed.

  • The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebars. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variables are the type of reinforcing bar and reinforcement ratio. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior, crack pattern and width.

  • This study was conducted to propose the optimum minimum requirement of cutoff system composed of the impermeable soil layer and vertical barrier in offshore landfill for prevention pollution leakage by seepage, advection, and dispersion numerical analyses under steady state. According to the study results, the minimum requirement of impermeable soil layer is below $1{\times}10^{-6}cm/s$ of hydraulic conductivity with more than 500 cm thickness or a system with equivalent cutoff effect. The minimum requirement of vertical barrier is below $1{\times}10^{-6}cm/s$ of hydraulic conductivity with more than 50 cm thickness or a system with equivalent cutoff effect. In addition, the vertical barrier should be embedded enough to seal securely with the impermeable soil layer for working cutoff effect.

  • This study examined the reduction effect of a hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall of a portable water storage tank with a convex bottom floor. For the numerical simulation, the linearized Peregrine's equation was used to analyze the lapping waves in the tank caused by water falling from a supplying nozzle. The hydrodynamic force could be calculated by measuring the maximum run-up wave height at the vertical wall. The initial conditions of the numerical experiments were set up by controlling the positions and heights of the water supplying nozzle. Finally, the hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall can be reduced by the convex bottom design of the portable water storage tank so it can be applied to improve the structural stability.

  • The floors of building structures equipped with vibrating machines can be susceptible to large vibration as a result of resonance or beating. Such a vibration can be reduced efficiently by using tuned mass dampers. However, the effectiveness of the damper depends greatly on the location and the natural frequency of the damper. To determine the optimum damper location is especially important since the dynamic behavior of a building structure varies with the location of the input loading. To this end, it is intended to decide the location and natural frequency of tuned mass dampers for reducing vibration of both loaded floors and floors located nearby the loaded floors considering the location and frequency components of the loading. The Vector composition method and the super elements are used th obtain the responses in steady states, and the optimum damper location and natural frequencies were found with the given damper mass.

  • This paper aims to realize the information of a subject existing in a still image with objective values. To attain the goal, this research takes the vanishing point that a 2D still image has as the basis and recomposes the still image into a 3D image using a 3D program. Also, in order to set up the axis of the camera necessary to recompose a 3D image, this paper used the lens angle of view that the image has and floor patterns as well. The 3D image completed in this way can measure the size and distance of all subjects in the floor patterns if the size value of a particular reference subject is known, and through this, it can be possible to acquire basic information of a subject that can be either a criminal or a clue in the images of CCTVs or some criminal scene.

  • In earthquake situations, broadcasting and communication services are directly linked to rapid on-site rescue and effective restoration works. Recently, a variety of base isolation devices are widely introduced on building floors to avoid critical seismic damages of telecommunication facilities. However, in buildings with long fundamental periods, those devices may have undesirable amplification of seismic responses due to resonance effect between the building floors and base isolation devices. This study performs the seismic safety evaluation of two types of base isolation devices deployed for telecommunication facilities in mid- and high-rise buildings through numerical and experimental approaches. It is found that mid- and high-rise buildings can have low-frequency dynamic responses at the top floor when being subjected to design basis earthquake loading. Furthermore, bi-directional shake table testing demonstrated that the selected base isolation devices can exhibit unstable dynamic behaviors under such low-frequency excitations of the floor.

  • The floor impact sound insulations are installed frequently for reducing the floor impact sound into the floor slab of the residential buildings in recent years. Therefore the analytical FE model considering the insulation is needed for the sound and vibration analysis of the floor and it is necessary to use a refined finite element model fer considering the large number of modes involved dynamic responses. So it is very difficult to use FE model because of the tiresome task for constructing the FE model, taking a lot of times for analysis and the impossibility of using the proportional damping. The efficient analysis and modeling method are proposed to the dynamic analysis for the floor with damping layer in this study. The floor slabs and finished layers are modeled individually and the spring elements that mean damping layers used to connect two parts. The dynamic analysis by the $Newmark-{\beta}$ method is performed to solve the non-proportional damping problem due to the damping coefficient of insulations.
