Concrete bridge decks, as well as asphalt pavement, are directly exposed to traffic loads and environmental conditions like rain water and deiceing chemicals. In this reason, there are often observed the deteriorations of asphalt overlay and of concrete deck under pavement. In this reason, it is important to identify the clear cause of concrete quality from a practical point of view. Therefore, in this paper it was initiated to ultimately suggest a protocol offering guidance as to assurance the quality control of concrete bridge deck on the part of void characteristics of concrete. Examinations such as visual inspection, deteriorated depth, and various void characteristic performed from cored specimens of 19 concrete bridge decks of various local conditions on the expressway. This paper discuss that the bridge deck condition analyses from the testing results were compared to a foreign guide line.
Recently, the failure case of the bridge deck slabs have been increasing in Korea and it was observed that the failure modes of most deck slabs collapsed were not caused by flexural moment but by local punching shear. The main reason of the failures was the punching shear failure of deck slabs under heavy truck traffics. This paper presents test results obtained from punching shear tests performed on prestressed precast deck specimens. Cracking patterns, failure modes, deflections, and stresses are included as well as discussion of the punching shear strength observed during punching shear tests. Static lest specimens had punching shear failures at loads much higher than predicted by the current codes. Tests results indicate that current code provisions appear to be conservative.

The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebars. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variables are the type of reinforcing bar and reinforcement ratio. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior, crack pattern and width.

Recently, the deteriorations of RC bridge decks on express-way are frequently observed. The major cause of deterioration for the RC concrete bridge decks exposed to de-icing chemiclas would be chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. Therefore, Waterproofing is necessary for improvement of bridge deck durability and comfortable utility. In this study is to investigate the appearance of deterioration and properties of concrete core from the collect in a bridge deck. The results of this study shows that penetration waterproofing agents shows low infiltration depth and low water-repellent. It appears that the damaging of concrete deck is primarily waterproofing system rather than physical property.

In this paper, the static load test of long span PSC deck used in the twin steel plate girder bridge was conducted. To evaluate the structural behavior of long span deck, longitudinally sufficient length of deck is needed, but it is difficult to test the full-scale long span deck due to limit of transportation, setting and laboratory space. Therefore, this study proposed a method to apply longitudinal stiffness of the full-scale deck to the test specimen of longitudinally short length, and it was reinforced with the steel beam. The failure behavior and structural performance of the long span deck were evaluated by the proposed test specimen deck.
This paper investigates the punching shear strength of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) slabs through a series of experimental study. Five full scale slabs were constructed using normal concrete and four different types of LWAC. Each lightweight aggregate (LWA) used in this study had different sources (clay, shale, or slate) and shapes (crushed or spherical shape). Based on the test results, the effect of the lightweight aggregates (LWA) on the punching shear behavior was investigated. From the test results, it was found that the punching shear failure surface of LWAC slab with spherical shape coarse aggregate was less inclined than that with crushed shape coarse aggregate, which resulted in an increase of the area of the shear failure surface. As a result, it leads to the increased punching shear strength of the slab. On the other hand, the failure surfaces of LWAC slab with crushed shape coarse aggregate and normal coarse aggregate were inclined similarly. Finally, the test results of this study were compared with the punching shear strength obtained from current design models, such as ACI and CEB-FIP, to examine the validation of current design model to predict the punching shear strength of the LWAC slab.

Corrugated steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded is lighter and has higher load carrying capacity than RC slabs due to an I-beam embedded in the corrugated deck. The methods suggested from ACI and design standard of roadway bridge are used to evaluate effective moment inertia of RC structures. This paper presents evaluation and application of effective moment inertia for corrugated steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded by using the methods suggested from design standard of roadway bridge, ACI and CEB-FIP MC-90. In order to evaluate effective moment inertia, a series of flexural experiments were carried out. Five beams were built and the parameters considered in the experiments were studs, shape of the sections and connections of the beams. By using the aforementioned methods, effective moments of inertia was calculated and they were compared with the experimental results. As a result, The method suggested from CEB-FIP MC-90 yielded more satisfactory agreement than that from ACI. It was found that the beam has studs showed high load-carrying capacity and high effective moment of inertia.
